Android Auto Keeps Disconnecting: How to Fix Wired and Wireless Problems

Find the cause of Android Auto disconnects with separate checks for USB cables and ports, wireless pairing, compatibility and vehicle settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Android Auto keeps disconnecting, first identify whether you use a USB cable or a wireless connection. For wired connections, check the cable, ports, phone unlock state, USB data setting and car settings. For wireless connections, confirm both devices support wireless Android Auto and complete Bluetooth pairing with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled. If those checks do not help, collect device and software details and contact the vehicle or phone maker—or submit an Android Auto bug report.

Start with the connection type and compatibility

Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones, so Google says a separate Android Auto download is not needed. The phone and vehicle still need to be compatible. A vehicle that supports wired Android Auto does not necessarily support wireless Android Auto. Check Google’s Android Auto setup and compatibility guidance; if wireless support is unclear, ask the vehicle manufacturer or dealer.

Before changing settings or reconnecting anything, park safely. Turn on the vehicle’s infotainment system, unlock the phone and follow prompts on both screens. Setup details and menu labels vary by phone, Android version, vehicle and region.

Fix a wired Android Auto connection

Check the cable and both USB ports

  1. Connect the phone and check whether it charges. Charging alone does not confirm that the cable supports data transfer.
  2. Inspect the phone port, cable connectors and vehicle USB port for lint, debris, visible damage or a loose fit. Do not use a metal object to probe a port.
  3. Try a short, known-good USB cable that supports data transfer and has connectors compatible with both the phone and vehicle. This is a useful diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix; a cable that only charges may not establish Android Auto.

A February 2024 Android Auto Community FAQ recommends checking ports and testing a shorter cable. It is community guidance, not a guarantee or a measured estimate of how often cables cause problems: Community connection troubleshooting FAQ.

Confirm the car and phone are allowing data

  • Check the vehicle manual or head-unit settings to confirm Android Auto is enabled. The setting’s location and default vary by vehicle.
  • If Android displays a USB notification, make sure data transfer is allowed. Depending on the phone and Android version, the option may be labeled “MTP,” “Media Transfer” or something similar; use the label available on your device.
  • Install available Android Auto and Google app updates. Update menus differ by device.

Consider clearing app data only after simpler checks

The same Community FAQ suggests clearing cache or storage for Android Auto and Google-related apps. Menu paths vary. Clearing storage can reset app state, so do this only if the cable, ports, vehicle setting and USB data mode checks have not resolved the problem and you are prepared to set the app up again.

Verify support and complete pairing

Confirm that both the phone and vehicle support wireless Android Auto; wired compatibility by itself is not enough. For first-time setup, use the car’s pairing flow and accept the prompts on both devices. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled during setup, as Google recommends in its setup instructions.

Avoid treating a reported workaround as a universal fix

Community posts describe different combinations of phones, vehicles and third-party displays, including reports of disconnects after updates. They do not establish one current, universal cause or fix. Reports about changing Wi-Fi switching settings conflict, so do not assume that changing such a setting will solve the problem.
