Check the Phone app and Google Play services permissions first, then verify the phone–car connection and pairing. If calls connect but sound or voice commands still fail, check the vehicle’s microphone and its separate call, voice, and media controls.
First, identify what is failing
Google says Android Auto phone conversations should play through the car speakers. If they do not, the symptom helps narrow down which part to check. A call that will not start is different from a call with no sound, and neither automatically means the microphone is at fault.

- The call will not start: Check the Phone app’s permissions and whether the phone is connected to the car.
- The other person cannot hear you: Check microphone permissions and, if your vehicle has one, its hands-free or aftermarket receiver microphone.
- You cannot hear the other person: Check the call’s audio route and the car’s call or voice volume controls.
- Sound comes from the phone rather than the car: Verify the phone–car connection and pairing.
- Voice dialing fails, but calls work: Check how you activate steering-wheel voice control and whether the car’s voice-command volume is audible.
Google’s Android Auto phone-call instructions describe using the car speakers and display controls for calls. Vehicle features and controls can vary.

Check the permissions that can support calls
Review permissions for both the Phone app and Google Play services for device connections. Their roles are related but not identical: the Phone app’s microphone permission supports audio detection or recording during calls, while its Phone permission supports making and managing calls. Google says Google Play services for device connections may use microphone permission to support phone calls when the device is connected to Android Auto.

- Open your phone’s Settings and search for Permissions, or open the app-permissions screen using your device’s own menu labels.
- Find the Phone app and review its Microphone and Phone permissions.
- Find Google Play services for device connections and review its microphone permission.
- If available, use Android’s Privacy Dashboard to see which apps have accessed permissions. Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions apply to supported Android versions; some features are limited to Android 12 or 13 and later.
Permission names and menu paths differ by Android version and phone manufacturer, so searching Settings is often the quickest route. Google’s documentation describes these permissions as possible supports for call features, not a guarantee that changing one will resolve every call problem. See Google’s explanation of Play services for device connections and the Phone app permission guide.
Verify the car connection and pairing
If Android Auto is not connecting reliably, or call audio is not reaching the car, check the connection separately from permissions. For wireless setup, Google instructs users to keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup and pair the phone and vehicle over Bluetooth. That setup guidance does not establish that toggling these settings will fix every in-call audio-routing problem.
- Confirm that both the phone and the vehicle support Android Auto.
- For initial wireless setup, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
- Pair the phone and car through Bluetooth, then follow the vehicle’s Android Auto setup process.
- If the connection remains unreliable, check Google’s Android Auto setup guidance and ask the vehicle manufacturer about vehicle-specific compatibility or connection behavior.
Check the microphone, voice button, and separate volumes
Voice-command failures and quiet call audio can be mistaken for a general call fault, but they involve controls that may differ by vehicle.

For steering-wheel voice commands
Press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button until the Android Auto tone, then speak. Reduce background noise. A brief press may not activate Android Auto voice commands as intended.
For an aftermarket receiver microphone
If your car uses an aftermarket head unit, check that its microphone is connected and working. If you are unsure how it was installed, consult the installer. This check is especially relevant if the other person cannot hear you.
For call and voice volume
Some vehicles control navigation, media, and voice volumes separately. Adjusting music volume may not change call or voice-command volume; consult the vehicle manual for the exact controls. Google describes these vehicle-dependent behaviors in its voice-command and volume guidance.

Use the Android Auto display to manage calls
Android Auto supports accepting incoming calls from the car display, viewing recent calls and voicemail, placing calls by voice, and managing call waiting. In some vehicles, steering-wheel controls can answer calls. Availability and control behavior vary by vehicle; Google’s call instructions describe the supported display options.
If calls still fail, report the symptom precisely
If the checks above do not resolve the issue, record the details before contacting support. This helps distinguish a connection problem from a vehicle-specific microphone or audio-control problem.
- Phone model and Android version
- Vehicle and head-unit model
- Whether Android Auto is wired or wireless
- Whether ordinary Bluetooth calls work
- Whether the failure affects incoming calls, outgoing calls, microphone capture, call playback, or voice dialing
For questions about the vehicle’s microphone, steering-wheel controls, or separate volume settings, contact the vehicle manufacturer or head-unit installer. Google’s general guidance offers several checks, not a single guaranteed fix.
