One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your car does not support Android Auto—or you simply want another way to get directions and audio—you can use the car’s built-in navigation, run navigation on your phone and play sound through Bluetooth or USB, or add a compatible aftermarket stereo. A car with Android Automotive OS may also run supported apps directly on its infotainment system. These options are not interchangeable: the right one depends on your car, your phone, and whether you need a car-screen interface or just directions and sound.
First, know what you are replacing
Android Auto runs on your phone and projects compatible apps onto a supported car display. Android Automotive OS (AAOS), by contrast, is an operating system built into the vehicle; compatible apps can run on the car’s infotainment system without being projected from a phone. Google services such as Maps, Play Store, and Assistant may be available on an AAOS vehicle through Google Automotive Services, but AAOS and Google services are not the same thing. Automakers can contract for those services, so check what a particular car actually includes.

Google describes driving-oriented app categories such as navigation, media audio, and communication. App support is curated for in-car use; video apps on AAOS are primarily intended for when the vehicle is parked, not as an alternative for use while driving. See Google’s Android for Cars overview and design process.
Compare the practical alternatives
| Option | Where apps run | What you get | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in AAOS system | In the vehicle | A car-screen interface for apps supported by that vehicle | Useful if your car already has AAOS and the apps you need. App availability and Google services depend on the vehicle and automaker. |
| Phone navigation with Bluetooth or USB audio | On your phone | Directions on the phone, with sound through the car if its audio system supports the connection | A practical basic setup when you mainly need directions and audio. It does not provide Android Auto’s integrated car-display experience. |
| Compatible aftermarket stereo | On your phone, projected to the stereo’s display | A display-based phone-projection experience when the exact stereo and phone support it | Consider it if you want a car display and your vehicle accepts a compatible unit. Fitment, wiring, installation, and wired or wireless support vary. |
| Existing navigation and Bluetooth | In the vehicle, with audio from the car system | The car’s own navigation and audio features | May be enough if your installed system meets your needs. Features vary by make, model, age, and software. |
Use phone navigation with the car’s audio
If your car lacks a useful projection display, a navigation app on the phone paired with Bluetooth or a USB connection is often the simplest fallback. Bluetooth can carry audio when supported by the car; USB behavior depends on the vehicle and connection, so consult the car’s manual if audio does not play as expected. Google’s media guidance covers listening to media with Android Auto, but the connection options and controls available outside Android Auto depend on the particular car and phone.

A phone mount can make this setup easier to use, but no single position is safe or lawful for every vehicle and location. Before setting off, enter the destination and start the route; do not handle the phone while driving. Choose a position that does not obstruct your view, and check local rules and your vehicle documentation. Google does not endorse one mount or specify a universally safe placement.
Add an aftermarket stereo for a car-screen experience
A compatible aftermarket stereo can provide a display-based option in a car that lacks suitable factory projection. Google’s consumer page says Android Auto works with compatible cars and aftermarket stereos, and describes USB and wireless connections. It lists JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer as examples of makers with supported wireless stereos; that is not an endorsement, and wireless support must be confirmed for the exact model with its manufacturer. See Google’s Android Auto compatibility information.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Before buying, verify the stereo’s exact model, your vehicle’s fitment, required wiring and installation, and your phone’s compatibility. A product listing that says “Android Auto” alone does not establish that the unit fits your car or supports the connection method you want.

Before paying for new hardware, review the infotainment features and manual for your make, model, and year. Built-in navigation and Bluetooth may already cover directions and audio; an AAOS vehicle may have compatible apps available directly on its screen. Do not assume that having AAOS means the car includes Google services, or that two vehicles with the same operating system offer the same apps.

- Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
- Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
- Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
- Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.
Google reported in a May 13, 2025 announcement that more than 250 million cars supported Android Auto and that more than 50 car models had Google built-in. Those are Google’s figures as of that announcement, not current 2026 totals or a guarantee that a particular vehicle supports a particular feature. See Google’s announcement.
Choose by the experience you need
- You mainly need directions and sound: try phone navigation with Bluetooth or USB audio if your car supports it.
- You want an interface on the car’s screen: check whether the vehicle already has AAOS with the apps you need, or whether a compatible aftermarket stereo will fit.
- Your factory system already works for you: use its navigation and audio rather than replacing them by default.
Ordinary phone navigation can cover basic directions, but it does not automatically reproduce Android Auto’s driving-oriented interface. Match the choice to the capabilities of your specific phone and vehicle, and confirm compatibility before making a purchase.
