The result describes just under 1,500 Android Authority readers—not Android users as a whole—and it does not show that changing the setting reliably improves sound.
What did the Android Authority poll find?
Andy Walker’s October 6, 2026 report, “Survey: Plenty of readers neglect this key Bluetooth audio setting,” reports responses from just under 1,500 readers to the question: “Do you select your preferred Bluetooth audio codec, or do you let your phone take control?”

The largest reported group leaves the choice at default. The substantial share unaware of the option also fits the report’s description of codec controls as a setting many people encounter only when exploring Developer Settings.
What does leaving the codec on default mean?
According to Walker’s report, when the setting stays at default, the phone and Bluetooth headphones negotiate which codec to use. That is different from manually choosing a specific option in Developer Settings or selecting a device-labeled “HD” option.

The poll report does not give a phone-by-phone settings path, identify Android versions, or list codecs supported by particular headphones. Menu names and available choices can vary by device, so the poll is not a universal how-to guide.
Does choosing a codec manually improve sound?
The poll measures what respondents say they do, not whether one setting sounds better in a controlled listening test. Its results therefore do not establish that manual selection improves audio for every listener or device combination.

Walker notes that bitrate and resolution are only part of the decision: stability, compatibility, efficiency, and latency also matter. A codec choice that looks preferable on one measure may not be the best fit for a particular phone, headphones, or use case. The report does not compare named codecs or test specific devices.

How broadly should the result be read?
These percentages describe Android Authority poll respondents, not a representative sample of Android users. The report does not provide a sampling frame or detailed methodology, so it cannot establish how common each behavior is among all Android owners. It also does not break responses down by phone model, operating-system version, or headphone compatibility.

Walker’s closing advice is to leave the settings alone and let devices negotiate, but that is his editorial view—not an official Android recommendation or a rule that applies to every listener. The poll’s clearest takeaway is narrower: among the readers who answered, more left the setting at default than reported actively selecting a codec, and many did not know the option was there.
