A new Android phone is only as useful as the apps you put on it. The goal isn’t to download everything—it’s to install a small set of apps that cover communication, security, backups, navigation, and your daily workflows.
This guide gives you a reliable install checklist (with real app examples), explains the safest way to install Android apps, and covers what to do when Play Store installs fail or apps misbehave.

Use it like a runbook: set up your accounts first, then install apps category-by-category, then fix permissions and defaults so everything feels “instant” on day one.
Before you install anything: prerequisites and setup
Confirm your essentials (network, storage, accounts)
Before downloading apps, check your Wi‑Fi is stable and you have enough storage. A typical “day one” install can easily use 10–20 GB once you include updates, offline maps, and media downloads.

Then make sure you sign in to your Google account (or add one) because many core Android apps use it for sync and backup.
Know your Android version and security patch level
Go to Settings → About phone to confirm Android version and Security patch level. Apps behave differently depending on API level and permission models.
Turn on backups and check your synced data
Open Settings → Google (or Accounts) → Backup and enable it if it isn’t already on. This helps restore app data during migration and reduces “re-login” pain.
Set screen lock before installing sensitive apps
Use a PIN, pattern, or password before you add password managers, authenticator apps, or payment apps. Many apps will ask for additional verification once you enable the lock screen.
How to install Android apps (safe, reliable methods)
Platform: Google Play Store
This is the default and usually the safest path. It verifies app signatures, handles updates automatically, and enforces modern permission rules.
- Open the Play Store.
- Use the search bar to find an app (example: Google Messages).
- Tap the app result, then tap Install.
- Review permissions when prompted, then allow what’s required for core functionality.
- After installation, open the app and sign in. Set it as a default if requested (browser, SMS, maps).
Platform: Phone-to-phone migration (from your old Android)
If you’re moving from another Android device, migration often restores app lists and some data. It’s the fastest route to get your essentials back.
- During setup, choose the option to move data (Google’s on-screen migration flow).
- Confirm the accounts you want to restore.
- Let the process complete before you start installing new APKs.
- After migration, open the Play Store and update any apps that weren’t restored.
Platform: APK install (only when you must)
APK installs bypass the Play Store’s update and safety pipeline. Use them only when an app isn’t available on your device/region or you trust the source.

Troubleshooting and common gotchas
Play Store install stuck or spinning forever
Start with the simplest fixes: confirm you’re on Wi‑Fi, then check storage space. If downloads are paused, resume them and restart the Play Store app.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage → tap Clear cache.
- Then do the same for Google Play services.
- Restart your phone.
- Try installing again from Play Store with a stable connection.
App says it’s not compatible with your device
This usually happens due to Android version, CPU architecture, or unsupported features. Check the app’s requirements in the Play Store listing.
- Verify Android version under Settings → About phone.
- Check if you’re using a work profile that restricts app installs.
- Look for an alternative official app build or a web version.
Notifications don’t work for the apps you installed
Modern Android requires per-app notification permissions and “battery optimization” settings to be correct.
- Go to Settings → Apps → select the app → Notifications → allow categories.
- Then check Settings → Battery → Battery usage → disable optimization for that app (or set it to “Unrestricted”) if the OS permits.
RCS/SMS messaging looks broken after migration
If Google Messages is present but RCS isn’t working, it’s often a SIM/account provisioning issue.
- Open Google Messages → Settings → Chat features.
- Confirm your phone number is correct and connectivity is stable.
- Toggle chat features off and back on, then wait for activation.
APK install fails with a parse or signature error
This can happen if the file is corrupted, downloaded from an untrusted mirror, or you’re installing an APK built for a different architecture.
- Re-download from the official source.
- Check whether you already installed a different version from Play Store—removing it can help.
- Verify you enabled Install unknown apps only for the right app, then try again.
App permissions are too broad (or not enough)
Review permissions for each app right after install. Over-permission is a security risk; under-permission causes broken features.
- Go to Settings → Privacy → Permission manager (or App permissions).
- Fix the permissions that matter for each app: location for maps, camera for photo apps, and storage for file access.
FAQs
How many Android apps should I install on a new phone?
A practical starting point is 15–30 core apps plus a few extras for your hobbies. If you’re regularly installing past 50 apps, you’ll spend more time managing notifications than using the phone.
Should I install Android apps only from the Play Store?
For most people, yes. Play Store installs are easier to update and safer to manage. Use APKs only when you have a trusted source and a clear reason.
Do I need both a password manager and the browser password manager?
Ideally, use one primary password manager. Browser autofill can work short-term, but a dedicated password manager gives you better cross-device control and vault security.
What’s the first app I should set as default?
Usually your browser and your messaging app. Set defaults early so links and SMS/RCS interactions go where you expect.

Bottom Line
To get the most from your new Android smartphone, install a focused set of Android apps that cover communication, security, backups, navigation, and productivity. Do it in a clean order: set up accounts and backups first, then install and set defaults, then tighten permissions.
If you start with the essentials above and keep Play Store installs prioritized, you’ll avoid most setup headaches and end up with a phone that feels fast, secure, and organized from day one.
