If an Android app you disabled appears again after an update, first check whether it is actually enabled: an app returning to view is not proof that an update changed its status. Google’s guidance documents several distinct behaviors—such as Play Protect disabling a potentially harmful app, unused-app permission resets, and administrator controls on managed devices—but does not establish a general update process that re-enables disabled apps. The cause depends on the app and device.
Check whether the app is enabled
On your phone, open Settings > Apps (the wording and route vary by manufacturer) and select the app. If the available control says Enable, the app is disabled. If it says Disable, it is enabled. This check is more reliable than whether an icon appears on the home screen.

What could explain the change?
There is no confirmed universal update-related cause in the available official guidance. The useful distinction is who changed the app’s state, what changed, and whether the phone is managed.

Work through the checks safely
- Confirm the status in Settings. Open Settings > Apps, select the app, and note whether the control offers Enable or Disable. Menu labels can differ by phone.
- Check Google Play’s listing. Open Profile menu > Manage apps & device > Manage and inspect the action shown for the app.
- Identify the app and phone. Record the app’s exact name and whether it came preinstalled. Check Settings > About phone for the model and Android version; the exact menu names may vary.
- Check for a security notification. If Play Protect warned about the app, review the warning and Play Protect status before deciding what to do. Do not bypass a security warning without understanding it.
- Ask the administrator if the phone is managed. On a work or school device, check with the organization’s administrator before trying to change app availability.
- Report a reproducible change. If the app’s Settings status changes immediately after a specific update, give the phone maker or app developer the device model, Android version, app name or package name, update date, and whether the app is preinstalled or downloaded.
Why disabling may not be an option
Disabling is not the same as uninstalling: a disabled app stays on the phone, while uninstalling removes an app where removal is allowed. Android’s guidance says disabling hides the app and prevents it from running or updating. The Disable control is not available for every app or device, especially where a preinstalled system app is involved. Avoid changing or removing system apps without understanding that other apps or system functions may depend on them.

If you have confirmed in Settings that the app changed from disabled to enabled, note when it happened and whether the device is managed. The documented controls do not provide one consumer setting that prevents every system or administrator-managed app from changing state. For a personal phone, contact the phone maker or app developer with the details you recorded; for a work or school phone, start with its administrator.
