Android AI is a hybrid system, not one model running entirely on every phone. Some supported app features can run Gemini Nano locally through Android’s AICore service; other features use cloud Gemini models, and developers can design experiences that combine local and cloud processing. Which path a feature takes—and whether you can use it—depends on the device, app, feature, region, and rollout.
Does Android AI run on the phone or in the cloud?
It can run either way. Android’s documented AI landscape includes on-device Gemini Nano, cloud-based Gemini models, and hybrid designs that route work between them. “Android AI” therefore does not identify a single model or guarantee that a particular request stays on your phone.

The execution path is a product and feature decision. A developer might use a local model for a bounded task and send a more demanding request to a cloud model, but the routing rules depend on the app. Google’s developer materials describe Gemini Pro and Flash cloud models and Firebase AI Logic as options for building cloud-connected or hybrid experiences.

|---|---|---|
| Where does inference happen? | On the device, for a supported feature using the local model. | On Google’s cloud models, when the feature sends work to them. |
| Does it need a network connection? | Android Developers says on-device prompts can run without a server call, enabling offline use for that inference. | Cloud requests require connectivity to reach the service. |
| What tasks fit? | Potentially smaller, well-defined tasks; actual capability depends on the model and app. | Potentially larger documents or tasks needing more knowledge or context; the app determines what it supports. |
| What should users check? | Device eligibility, feature support, performance, and whether the specific task is processed locally. | What information the feature sends, its account and network requirements, and its stated data controls. |
These are general trade-offs, not a guarantee that one path is always faster, more private, or more capable. Android Developers says local inference speed depends on device hardware; the app’s actual routing and feature design matter too.

What is Gemini Nano on Android?
Gemini Nano is Google’s on-device model for supported Android experiences. Android Developers documents it running inside AICore, an Android system service that provides an API for compatible apps, manages model updates, incorporates safety features, and can use hardware acceleration.
For a supported app prompt that runs locally, Android Developers says inference happens without a server call. That can enable offline use and avoid network latency for that inference. It does not mean every Gemini feature uses Nano: a feature may use a cloud model, or a developer may combine local and cloud processing.
Android Developers reported on July 21, 2026, that more than 140 million devices were running Gemini Nano. The same article described one prompt-iteration demo in which response time fell from 13 seconds to under 2 seconds. Those figures describe Google’s stated deployment count and a specific developer example—not independent measurements of all Android devices or a general performance benchmark.

Which Android phones support Gemini AI features?
There is no single device-compatibility answer for all Android AI. Support depends on the feature and its requirements, and an announcement about a device family does not establish that every Android phone—or every user of a named phone—has access.
In May 2026, Google announced that Gemini Intelligence features would begin rolling out in waves on recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones in summer 2026, with other device form factors planned later that year. That is Google’s rollout plan, not a guarantee of availability on every model, in every market, or by a particular date.
Google’s Galaxy S26 announcement described selected features and limits more specifically. Separately, Google’s 2024 Pixel 9 announcement named Call Notes and Pixel Screenshots as Gemini Nano examples. Those Pixel 9 examples establish what Google described for that device and announcement; they do not establish that Pixel 9 receives every later Gemini Intelligence feature.

For a particular feature, check the current device and app eligibility, country and language support, account requirements, and whether rollout has reached your device. These details can change after an announcement.

Google announced Gemini Intelligence features including multi-step tasks across apps, browsing assistance in Chrome, intelligent autofill, and Rambler voice rewriting. These describe announced capabilities and rollout plans; they should not be read as proof that all Android users can access them or that Gemini can act without limits.
The Galaxy S26 announcement describes a narrower task-automation beta: on selected devices and apps in the United States and Korea, initial supported categories are food, grocery, and rideshare. Google says users can view progress, interrupt or stop a task, and must provide a final confirmation. This is a bounded example, not a claim that all apps or transactions can be automated.

Is on-device Android AI more private?
Local inference has a specific privacy-relevant property: for a supported prompt processed on-device, Android Developers says that inference does not call a server. That does not by itself describe what an app does with other data, whether every part of a feature stays local, or how well a protection works in practice. For hybrid and cloud features, the app’s actual processing path and disclosures matter.
Google’s 2026 Android security post describes three principles for AI experiences: explicit user control, comprehensive data protection, and operational transparency. It names Private Compute Core, Private AI Compute, and protected KVM as technologies used to safeguard ambient data for proactive-assistance features. Google also says automation begins only when requested, can be restricted to allowed apps, and is designed to require purchase confirmation. It describes progress visibility and a planned Privacy Dashboard activity history.
These are Google’s design and policy descriptions, not an independent audit of privacy effectiveness or a guarantee that every feature implements each safeguard identically. For a specific feature, look for its permissions, processing disclosures, available controls, and the data it handles.

What Android’s AI announcements do—and don’t—prove
Google frames its approach as an “intelligence system.” That is Google’s product language, not a formal Android architecture standard. The underlying picture is more concrete: local model execution through AICore for supported apps, cloud Gemini services, and operating-system or app integrations that expose AI features to users.
Scale figures need the same distinction. Google stated in a May 13, 2025 Android Show post that Android had more than 3 billion active devices in over 190 countries. That is Google’s platform-scale figure; it does not measure AI adoption, feature availability, or AI quality.
Likewise, an announced feature is not evidence of universal access, independent performance, or fully autonomous operation. The Galaxy S26 beta’s limited markets, app categories, and confirmation step illustrate why device, region, app, and user-control details belong alongside feature claims.

Quick Recap
How to judge an Android AI feature
- Find the execution path: Does the feature identify Gemini Nano or on-device processing, a cloud Gemini model, or a combination? Do not infer the route from the word “Gemini” alone.
- Check offline behavior: Local inference may work without a network call, but only if that particular feature supports it and the required model is available.
- Match the task to the capability: Consider how much context the task needs and whether the feature has access to the relevant app or information.
- Verify eligibility: Check the exact phone, app, country, language, account, and rollout status—not just the Android version or a product-family name.
- Review control and disclosure: Look for what data is processed, what actions require confirmation, and whether you can limit, interrupt, or stop the feature.
- Treat performance claims in context: A demo or device-specific result is not a universal benchmark; hardware and implementation affect local inference speed.
