How Android Advanced Protection and Play Protect fit together
Google Play Protect is Android’s built-in app-safety service. It checks apps at installation and scans periodically, including apps installed from outside Google Play. Android Advanced Protection (also described as Device protection) groups Play Protect with additional app, device, messaging, network and browsing protections. Google says that while this bundle is on, Play Protect cannot be switched off. Google Android Help states: “When Advanced Protection is on, this cannot be turned off,” referring to Play Protect.

In short, Play Protect focuses on app safety and Android Advanced Protection broadens the protections around the device. Neither should be confused with Google’s separate Advanced Protection Program for Google Accounts.
What Google Play Protect does
Play Protect is on by default. It checks apps when they are installed and periodically scans the device. When it identifies a potentially harmful app, it may warn you, disable the app until it is uninstalled, or remove it automatically. It also checks apps from sources outside the Play Store. Google’s Play Protect help page describes the scanning, controls and possible responses.

Google documents that malware checks may involve information about network connections, potentially harmful URLs, the operating system and installed apps. If detection for unknown apps is enabled, you may be asked to send an app from outside Google Play to Google for evaluation. This describes Google’s stated handling; it is not an independent privacy assessment.
When Android Advanced Protection is off, Play Protect scanning can be managed in the Play Store: open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Play Protect, then its settings. Google recommends leaving scanning on. When Android Advanced Protection is on, the Play Protect switch is enforced.

What Android Advanced Protection adds
Android Advanced Protection is an umbrella setting intended to turn on multiple protections and make it harder for covered protections to be disabled accidentally or maliciously. The documented protections span several areas:

- Play Protect cannot be turned off while the bundle is enabled.
- Installations and updates for apps from unknown sources are blocked.
- Verified accessibility tools are restricted.
- Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) can be enabled for supported apps; Google notes it may affect performance.
Device access and theft safeguards
The bundle includes Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Failed Authentication Lock, USB Protection while the phone is locked, limits on Watch Unlock, and an Inactivity Reboot. The inactivity feature reboots the phone if it remains locked for 72 hours. These protections are not a replacement for setting a screen lock.

Messages and calls
Depending on the device, region and Google apps available, protections include Google Messages spam and scam safeguards, unsafe-link warnings, Scam Detection, and Phone by Google caller ID, spam features and Automatic Call Screen in supported regions.
Network and browsing
On supported devices, the bundle can provide 2G Network Protection. It also includes Android Safe Browsing, asks Chrome to enforce HTTPS when possible, and disables Chrome’s JavaScript optimizer and WebGPU.

Intrusion investigation
Intrusion Logging is an optional feature for examining a possible device compromise. It is an investigative aid, not a guarantee that an intrusion will be detected or prevented.

Google marks some protections as dependent on supported devices or regions, and some require Google apps. As one specific example, Google’s USB Protection help says it is available on Pixel 6 and later, with implementation varying by manufacturer. It protects the USB data path while the screen is locked but does not block charging. Do not assume that this example’s device requirements apply to every protection.

Android Advanced Protection versus Play Protect

How to turn on Android Advanced Protection
- Set a screen lock if you do not already have one. Android requires it before you can enable the device protection bundle.
- Open Settings and look for Advanced Protection under Security & privacy. Another documented route is Settings > Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to enable it. Some devices may ask you to restart.
Menu names and paths can vary by device. Google notes that if you remove the screen lock after activation, Advanced Protection remains on, but some protections may not work optimally.
Do not confuse it with Google Account Advanced Protection
Google’s Advanced Protection Program is for securing a Google Account, not a device-wide Android setting. Google recommends it for people at elevated risk of targeted attacks, including journalists, activists, campaign staff, business leaders and IT administrators. It requires passkeys or security keys for sign-in, limits which apps may access account data, and can add steps to sign-in on a new device or recover an account. Some third-party services may not work with an enrolled account.
Enrollment also affects app installation on Android devices using that account. Google says most new installations from outside Play are blocked; Google Play, Android Debug Bridge and preinstalled Android app stores are listed exceptions. Existing non-Play apps are not removed and may still receive updates. These account-enrollment rules are separate from the Android Advanced Protection device switch. Which protection should you use?
- For baseline app checks: leave Google Play Protect on. It is enabled by default and checks both Play Store apps and apps from outside Play.
- For broader device safeguards: consider Android Advanced Protection if its app-source restrictions and supported device, messaging, network and browsing protections fit how you use your phone.
- For stronger Google Account sign-in security: consider the separate Account Advanced Protection Program if its sign-in requirements and compatibility tradeoffs suit your needs. A physical security key is one option; Google also supports passkeys.
Enabling the Android device bundle is not a requirement for using Play Protect, and enrolling in the Google Account program is not the same as enabling device protection.
