The latter does not require root, but “perfect” would overstate what the app can promise: AdAway’s own support page lists situations where blocking may fail or another app may stop working.
What AdAway does—and what it does not guarantee
AdAway is released under GPLv3+ and is designed to block ads by using hosts files. On devices where modifying the hosts file is not an option, it can use Android’s local VPN mode instead. The project says this mode works without root. A local VPN here is the filtering mechanism on the phone; it is not the same as subscribing to an external VPN service. AdAway’s official site describes the app and its download options, while its project repository documents the software.
This makes AdAway a plausible option for someone seeking free, system-level filtering rather than a browser-only extension. It does not establish that the app blocks every ad, works with every app, or is easier to set up than alternatives. Blocking can depend on the network, browser settings, and the hostnames an app uses.
Check compatibility and install from an official source
Android version and root access
The project’s current v5 line requires Android 8 or newer. Root is not required when using local VPN mode. For older devices, the repository points users to version 4; check the project’s version guidance before installing an older release rather than assuming the current app supports it.

Where to get AdAway
AdAway is not available on Google Play. Its official site directs users to F-Droid. Follow the project’s official download references and confirm the app’s publisher and source before installation; avoid third-party download pages that merely use the app’s name.
What setup and troubleshooting can involve
AdAway’s official FAQ identifies several reasons filtering may not work as expected. A proxy configured in a mobile-network APN can interfere, as can Chrome’s data-compression proxy. Some app-specific hostnames may need troubleshooting, and an app can stop working if a connection it requires is blocked. These are real trade-offs for system-wide filtering, not proof that the blocker is malfunctioning in every case.

- If ads remain, check whether the affected connection is using a mobile APN proxy or Chrome’s data-compression proxy.
- If one app breaks, consider whether its required hostname is being blocked; the project’s support guidance is the place to start diagnosing that case.
- AdAway’s documentation also describes permissions for downloading lists and updates, restarting the local VPN after network changes, and boot behavior. Read the permission explanations in the project materials so you know what the app needs for the filtering mode you choose.
The project also documents optional telemetry and bug reports. These are distinct from the basic explanation of how hosts-file or local-VPN filtering works; review the app’s own settings and privacy information if you are deciding whether to submit diagnostics.
How AdAway compares with Blokada
Blokada is another Android option, but its editions differ. The project’s repository describes Blokada 6 as a subscription service with cloud filtering, while Blokada 5 is free to run and performs filtering on-device. Blokada’s Play listing also markets encrypted DNS and a WireGuard VPN. Those descriptions are vendor claims, not results of a controlled comparison with AdAway.

Blokada users have posted individual complaints about ads that remain, activation difficulties, and compatibility in the Play listing’s reviews. These are anecdotes, not a measure of how common those problems are or evidence for a product ranking. Neither the available project descriptions nor these reviews settle which app is more effective or less frustrating for a particular phone and network.

AdAway is worth considering if your phone runs Android 8 or newer, you want a free, open-source blocker, and you are comfortable installing it through the project’s recommended source and investigating occasional connection problems. If you need a blocker that requires no setup, works in every app, or guarantees that no ads will appear, the project’s documented caveats mean AdAway cannot make that promise.
