Android 17 adds six capabilities to Advanced Protection Mode, including Intrusion Logging, USB Protection and a lockout after repeated authentication failures. They are not available on every Android phone: Google says USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock are limited to select Android 17 devices, and its USB help page specifically lists Pixel 6 and later. Advanced Protection is opt-in, and Intrusion Logging requires a separate choice.
What Android 17 adds to Advanced Protection
Google’s October 1, 2026 announcement lists six updates. Their availability depends on device support; Google has not published a complete list of supported non-Pixel models. Check your phone’s Advanced Protection settings and device documentation rather than assuming an Android 17 handset includes every feature.

- Intrusion Logging: An optional system-level record of selected device events that can help with later investigation.
- USB Protection: On supported devices, blocks a new USB data connection while the phone is locked.
- Accessibility restrictions: Restricts AccessibilityService access for apps that are not verified Accessibility Tools.
- WebGPU disabled in Chrome: Chrome disables WebGPU while Advanced Protection is on.
- Failed Authentication Lock: Locks the device after repeated authentication failures in settings or secured apps. Google’s reviewed sources do not specify a numeric threshold.
- App status transparency: A settings page shows which installed apps check Advanced Protection status. This helps users see app behavior; it is not itself a blocking defense.
These additions sit within a broader opt-in security configuration. Android Developers describes core configurations including blocking installation from unknown sources, restricting USB data signaling and requiring Google Play Protect scanning. Google says the wider suite can also affect app installation, browsing, theft and offline-device protections, messages and phone features. See Android 17 features for developers and Google’s Advanced Protection help.
What Intrusion Logging records—and what it cannot promise
Intrusion Logging requires Advanced Protection and is separately optional. Google says it can record:

It is investigative evidence, not a guarantee that a compromise will be detected or that every relevant event will appear. Google notes that during very heavy activity, logging may record events less frequently. Because logging operates at system level, Chrome Incognito does not receive special treatment: network events may reveal websites visited, though not specific pages.
Encryption, retention and your downloaded copy
Google says logs are end-to-end encrypted on the device before storage on Google servers. Encryption keys are protected by the Google Account password and screen-lock credentials. Google retains encrypted logs for 12 months, then automatically deletes them. Users cannot manually delete them sooner, including after disabling Intrusion Logging or closing the account. If the device is lost or damaged and the screen-lock recovery factor is unavailable, the logs may be permanently inaccessible.

Does USB Protection block data while the phone is locked?
On a supported device with Device protection enabled, USB Protection prevents establishing a new USB data connection while the screen is locked. Unlocking the phone permits a new connection. Charging still works, although fast charging may not begin until the screen is unlocked in some cases.
Important exceptions
- A data connection started while the phone is unlocked can remain active after the phone locks.
- After locking, there can be a delay of a few seconds before a disconnected USB data connection is disabled.
- USB remains unprotected until the device finishes booting.
- Effectiveness can vary with manufacturers’ USB implementations. Hardware differences may also affect locked-device functions such as charging speed.
Google’s USB Protection instructions specify Pixel 6 and later. Its October 2026 announcement says USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock are available on select Android 17 devices, but does not enumerate supported non-Pixel models. The feature is enabled automatically on supported devices when Device protection is enabled. Check Google’s USB Protection help for device-specific guidance.

What happens after repeated failed authentication attempts?
Failed Authentication Lock is described as locking the device after repeated authentication failures in settings or secured apps. Google’s reviewed announcement and help materials do not state how many failures trigger the lock, or provide a complete supported-device list. Do not confuse this threshold with Advanced Protection’s separate Inactivity Reboot: Google says that feature reboots a phone after it remains locked for 72 hours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich phones support these features?
Google’s October 1, 2026 announcement says all six features are available on Android 17 devices except USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock, which are available on select Android 17 devices. That wording does not establish that every Android 17 handset supports the other four features. For USB Protection, Google specifically identifies Pixel 6 and later; the reviewed sources do not provide a full list of supported non-Pixel models. Availability can change, so check your phone’s settings and manufacturer documentation before relying on a feature.
