- The app opens fine via search or the Play Store, but no new icon appears on the home screen.
- The icon appears briefly, then disappears, or it never appears even after multiple restarts.
- The app drawer lists the app, but shortcuts aren’t generated on the home screen.
- Existing apps on the home screen are fine; only newly installed ones are affected.
Some users also notice that the default launcher or workspace grid feels “stale,” like the launcher didn’t refresh its database of installed apps.
Why this happens (common root causes)
Android’s home screen is maintained by a launcher (the system launcher or a vendor launcher). A QPR bug can break the handshake between package installation and the launcher’s indexing/shortcut creation.
Common culprits include:
- Launcher database not refreshing after package install/update.
- Corrupted or cached launcher state (workspace positions, icon cache, app drawer index).
- Default launcher mismatch after updates (launcher becomes “not default,” or a secondary launcher holds the workspace).
- Interference from icon packs, widgets, or automation tools that hook launcher behavior.
- Profile or work profile quirks where apps install into one profile but the home screen view is another.
Before you start: prerequisites and quick checks
Before changing anything, confirm the symptom and narrow scope.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the install succeeded: open the app from the Play Store or Settings → Apps → (app name) to ensure it’s installed and enabled.
- Check user profile: if you use a work profile, make sure you’re viewing the correct home screen profile.
- Test with one known app: install a single fresh app and see whether it shows up at all.
- Note your launcher: Settings → Apps → Default apps (or Home app) to identify what’s driving your home screen.
Fixes for affected users (most effective first)
Try these in order. Many cases resolve once the launcher restarts and refreshes its app index.
Verify the new app is actually installed (and not hidden)
Go to Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → find the app → confirm it’s Enabled. If you have a “hide apps” feature (some launchers do), check whether it’s hidden from the launcher.
Also check if the app shows in Play Store under Manage apps & device → Installed. If it’s installed and enabled, the problem is likely launcher indexing.
Switch and reassign the default launcher
If your device supports multiple launchers (even temporarily), switching defaults forces Android to re-bind home screen responsibilities.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app (wording varies).
- Pick an alternative launcher (if you have one installed) and set it as the default.
- Reboot once.
- Switch the default launcher back to your original launcher.
Rebuild the launcher workspace by restarting the launcher process
A launcher restart can refresh its internal database without wiping anything.
- Go to Settings → Apps → search for Launcher or open your launcher entry (commonly “One UI Home,” “Launcher,” or “Pixel Launcher”).
- Tap Force stop.
- Return to the home screen and wait 10–30 seconds.
If “Force stop” is present, this is one of the safest first actions. If it’s missing, you may be in a restricted state (managed device/profile) or using a launcher that doesn’t allow force stopping.
Clear launcher/app drawer caches (minimal reset first)
Cache clearing usually fixes stale indexing with lower risk than clearing storage/data.

- Tap Storage (or Storage & cache).
- Select Clear cache.
- Repeat for the Android System WebView only if you also see UI rendering issues (not required for pure home-screen indexing).
After clearing cache, restart the launcher (Force stop) or reboot.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check whether App Drawer settings are hiding new installs
Some launchers offer an “App drawer” mode or filters that can prevent auto-population or hide newly installed apps.
- Open the app drawer.
- Look for filters/search tabs like Hidden, Recently added, or categories.
- Check whether “Sort by” or “Show new apps” options are enabled.
If you recently changed an icon pack or drawer setting, revert it temporarily.
Boot into Safe mode to rule out a launcher or automation conflict
Safe mode disables third-party apps. If the problem disappears, a conflicting app (icon pack tool, task automation, “cleaner” apps, custom keyboard/gesture apps) is likely involved.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Touch and hold Power off (or the restart option).
- When prompted, choose Safe mode.
- Install a new app (or wait, if it’s already installed) and check whether it appears.
If it works in Safe mode, uninstall the most recent third-party apps that touch home screen behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdate the launcher and Android System components
QPR1 bugs can be mitigated by app-level updates to launcher components and system updates pushed via Play services.
- Open Google Play Store → tap your profile icon → Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, update any item related to launcher or system components (device dependent).
- Also update Android System WebView and Google Play services if they’re out of date.
After updates, reboot and re-check. Launcher indexing often runs after system component updates.
Apply targeted workarounds: find-by-search, pin from the app list, and re-adding shortcuts
Even if the home screen auto-population fails, you can manually restore shortcuts.
- Search for the new app using the home screen search bar (or app search).
- Press and hold the app icon → choose Add to Home or Place on home screen (wording varies).
- If you see it in the app drawer but not on the grid, use Pin or Add shortcut from the long-press menu.
If even long-press doesn’t offer “Add to Home,” your launcher workspace database is likely the broken piece—use the launcher cache/storage steps below.

If the bug started after a specific change
Timeline matters. A recent change can tell you which component to reset.
After updating Google Play services or a system component
Launcher indexing sometimes runs on certain system update events. If you updated around the day the bug began, try:
- Reboot.
- Clear launcher cache.
- Force stop and reopen the launcher.
After changing icon packs or widgets
Icon packs can delay or override icon binding. Temporarily revert to the stock theme/icon pack.
- Open Settings → Wallpaper and style (device dependent).
- Switch icon pack/theme back to default.
- Reboot and reinstall one test app.
After enabling accessibility or gesture navigation changes
Accessibility services and gesture/launcher overlays can hook launcher UI. If the issue started after enabling a service, disable it temporarily.

Advanced troubleshooting (when the above doesn’t work)
If the launcher still won’t show new apps, you may need a more disruptive reset—but you can usually avoid a full factory reset.
Reset home screen / launcher settings (non-factory)
Some launchers expose a “Reset” option that clears home screen configuration without touching app data.
- Go to Settings → Apps → your launcher.
- Open Storage.
- Look for options such as Reset home screen or Reset settings (availability varies by device).
If you see only “Clear storage,” prefer cache/force-stop first.
Clear Launcher storage via Settings (or device owner profiles)
Clearing storage resets the launcher’s workspace and sometimes your home screen layout. It’s often effective for indexing bugs.
- Settings → Apps → your launcher.
- Tap Storage.
- Select Clear storage (or Clear data).
- Reboot.
Expect the home screen grid and custom layouts to revert. If you use widgets/shortcuts heavily, consider taking a quick photo of your layout so you can rebuild faster.
Use ADB to reset launcher data (developer/advanced users)
If you’re comfortable with ADB, you can reset the launcher’s data directly and get more control over what changes.
Prereqs: enable Developer options → USB debugging, install platform-tools on your computer, and pair your device via USB.

- Find your launcher package name (often
com.android.launcher3for AOSP/Pixel-like launchers, but device/vendor varies):
Option A: use Settings to find the launcher package, or list packages via ADB.
Example commands (adjust package as needed):
adb shell pm list packages | grep launcher
adb shell pm clear com.android.launcher3
- Reboot or force stop the launcher, then reinstall a test app.
If you don’t know the exact package name, don’t guess—resetting the wrong package can break core UI.
Developer angle: how to diagnose and report this properly
If you’re filing a bug (or you’re maintaining an app affected by launcher indexing issues), you’ll get faster traction with consistent reproduction steps and logs.
Reproduce with consistent test conditions
Use a clean test device where possible and record the build fingerprint.
- Android version: Android 16 QPR1
- Build: capture the exact build number (Settings → About phone → Software information).
- Launcher: record the launcher name/version (e.g., Pixel Launcher, One UI Home, or third-party).
- Install method: Google Play install vs sideload APK can yield different behavior.
Collect logs you’ll want in a bug report
At minimum, grab:
- logcat around the installation event and after a home screen refresh.
- System UI and PackageManager lines that show package install/update and launcher indexing triggers.
- If the app appears in app drawer but not home, capture any shortcut/launcher intent failures.
Typical command from a development machine:
adb logcat -v time -b system -b main -s PackageManager Launcher3 ActivityTaskManager
Tailor filters to the actual launcher package on your device.
Validate manifest and launcher intent behavior
Even if the root cause is launcher-side, you should verify your app still exposes launcher entry points correctly.
- Confirm you have a proper launcher activity with MAIN and LAUNCHER intent filters.
- Check if you use dynamic shortcuts, deep links, or icon adaptations that might interact with launcher indexing.
- If you recently changed targetSdkVersion, test whether the issue correlates with a specific build.
Check installation/update paths that trigger the bug
Test at least these scenarios:
- Fresh install from Google Play.
- Update over an existing install.
- Uninstall then reinstall.
- Sideload APK then reboot.
Record which scenario triggers “no home screen icon.” That helps isolate whether the bug is about install-time indexing vs update-time reconciliation.

Pin apps through the app list after install
Work around the missing auto-shortcut by manually pinning. This is usually fastest when you only install a few apps and you need the home screen back today.
Track for QPR follow-up patches and Google Play system updates
QPR releases are followed by incremental fixes. Make sure you also check system update cadence through Google Play updates (Launcher components, Play services, Android System WebView) rather than only waiting for a full OTA.

- Clearing app data for the new app when the real issue is launcher indexing. Your app install is usually fine.
- Repeatedly reinstalling the same app without restarting the launcher process. You can end up with the same cached/stale state.
- Forgetting work profile context: you install into one profile but check the home screen in another.
- Trying too many changes at once: if you switch launchers, clear caches, and disable accessibility all in one session, you won’t know which action actually helped.
FAQ
Does this affect only Android 16 QPR1, or also earlier builds?
Reports point to QPR1 builds specifically, but launcher refresh issues can appear in other versions too. If your device is on QPR1 and only new apps fail to show, start with launcher cache/storage resets first.
Will clearing launcher storage delete my apps?
No. Clearing launcher storage resets the home screen/workspace configuration for the launcher. Your installed apps remain installed; you may just lose shortcuts/widgets/layout.
Why do the apps show in search but not on the home screen?
That pattern strongly suggests the app is installed and indexed for system search, while the launcher’s home screen shortcut/workspace database isn’t refreshing or isn’t generating icons/shortcuts.
Is it safe to clear Pixel Launcher or One UI Home cache?
Yes, cache clearing is low risk. If cache clearing doesn’t work, clearing storage/data is more disruptive but still typically avoids a full factory reset.
What should I include in a bug report to Google or my device vendor?
Include your exact Android build number for Android 16 QPR1, your launcher name, the install method (Play vs APK), whether it fails for all new apps or only certain categories, and logcat output around the install event.
Bottom Line
If Android 16 QPR1 is preventing new apps from appearing on your home screen, the highest-success path is forcing the launcher to refresh: verify default launcher, restart/force stop the launcher process, clear launcher cache, and only then clear launcher storage if needed.
With the right troubleshooting order, you can usually restore home screen behavior without factory resetting. If you’re a developer, capture exact build/launcher details and logcat around the install event so the issue can be reproduced and fixed quickly in a follow-up QPR update.
