On a supported Android device, desktop windowing has the clearer option for turning a connected monitor into a separate desktop-like workspace. Stage Manager is a built-in way to organize overlapping, resizable windows on a supported iPad, but only a smaller subset of compatible iPads can move those windows to an external display. Choose based on your device and whether you want to work on the tablet itself or on a monitor.
What each mode does
Both features let you work with more than one app at a time, but they organize that work differently. Android desktop windowing uses separate app windows that can be moved and resized. Stage Manager presents overlapping, resizable windows and lets you switch among recent apps and app groups.

| Multitasking need | Android 16 desktop windowing | iPad Stage Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Several apps on one screen | Separate, movable and resizable windows, with a taskbar and window controls on supported devices. Google’s Android Help describes availability as device-dependent. | Overlapping, resizable windows, with app groups and recent-app switching. Apple’s Stage Manager guide describes the feature and supported iPads. |
| Use with an external display | Supported phones can start a desktop session on a monitor; some supported tablet setups can extend the desktop across both screens. Google’s March 3, 2026 announcement describes the rollout and named devices. | Moving windows to an external display is available on a narrower group of iPads than Stage Manager itself. See Apple’s model lists below. |
| Best fit for interaction | Desktop-first behavior favors keyboard and mouse or touchpad use. Touch-first behavior remains suited to using the device as a tablet. | Useful for arranging windows on the iPad; an external keyboard or pointer can be added to a compatible setup. |

Choose Android for a supported phone-or-tablet-to-monitor workspace
Android has the stronger documented case if you want to connect a supported device to a monitor and work in a separate desktop-like session. Google’s March 3, 2026 announcement says connected-display support became generally available with Android 16 QPR3 on supported Pixel and Samsung devices. It describes a taskbar and multiple freely resizable app windows on the external display; certain tablet setups can extend the desktop across both screens. The announcement names Pixel 8, 9 and 10 series, plus Samsung S26, Fold7, Flip7 and Tab S11 devices as supported at publication time. Check current support for your exact model rather than assuming Android 16 alone is enough. Google’s announcement and Android Help both qualify availability by device.
Choose Stage Manager to organize windows on a supported iPad
If your main goal is to keep several resizable app windows visible and switch between app groups on the iPad, Stage Manager is the relevant built-in feature. Apple’s iPadOS 26 support article, dated September 15, 2025, lists Stage Manager support across more iPads than external-display window movement. It does not establish that every compatible iPad can use Stage Manager on a monitor.

Android: confirm desktop windowing and display output
Google says desktop windowing is not available on all Android devices and that the experience varies by device. Its Android 16 launch post describes opening, moving and resizing multiple app windows in a single screen, but that feature description is not a guarantee of support on every Android 16 phone or tablet. Confirm both desktop-windowing availability and external-display output with the manufacturer for your model. Google’s Android 16 announcement describes the feature; the Android Open Source Project documentation explains desktop-windowing behavior.

Understand Android’s touch-first and desktop-first behavior
Android’s desktop-windowing documentation distinguishes two interaction styles. In touch-first mode, apps default to full-screen launches; in desktop-first mode, freeform launches are favored and a desktop taskbar stays visible. This helps explain why the same capability can feel different on a tablet used by touch alone and a device connected to a keyboard and pointer. It is a behavior distinction, not evidence that one mode is faster or more productive. Android Open Source Project: Desktop windowing.

Plan the display and input connections
An external monitor setup may need a compatible cable or hub, and a keyboard, mouse or trackpad may suit the way you want to work. Compatibility depends on the device and connection. Apple documents USB-C and DisplayPort connections and model-dependent display resolution limits; consult its USB-C iPad connection guide. For Android, confirm external-display support for the precise phone or tablet before buying a hub or adapter. A USB-C-to-HDMI hub is one possible connection accessory, not a guarantee of compatibility.

The platform documentation establishes feature behavior, rollout details and device compatibility, but it does not provide a head-to-head measurement of speed, reliability, battery life or productivity. Google’s statements describe Android capabilities and availability; Apple’s support article describes Stage Manager and compatible iPads. Those facts support a workflow-based recommendation, not a claim that one platform is universally better.
