The December security update is the headline security element: it updates protections in Android’s core and vendor layers. Even if your day-to-day features don’t change much, security patch levels are still worth taking promptly—especially if you use banking, travel, or sensitive work accounts on your phone.
Which Pixel phones are typically eligible
Eligibility depends on build type (carrier vs unlocked), region, and whether your device is currently running a compatible base build. In general, Pixel models supported in the Android 15 line are the ones targeted first.
Common Pixel categories that usually receive QPR updates include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Pixel (flagship generation + supported base)
- Pixel Pro models in the same generation
- Pixel A-series devices that remain eligible for quarterly updates
If you’re unsure, the only reliable method is to check for the OTA on your exact device—build fingerprints must match closely for OTA delivery.
What you should do before updating
Before installing Android 15 QPR1, spend 5–10 minutes on the essentials. It prevents most “failed update” scenarios.
- Back up: Use Google One backup or your usual workflow (photos, 2FA tokens, notes, app data).
- Charge: Keep the battery at least 50% (better: 70%+), or plug in during the update.
- Use stable Wi‑Fi: OTA downloads are sensitive to interruptions. Avoid public Wi‑Fi portals that time out.
- Free storage: Aim for 2–4 GB free. Insufficient space can block updates mid-install.
- Check modifications: If your bootloader is unlocked or you’re rooted, OTA behavior may change (and might fail).

Rollouts don’t show up for everyone at the same time. Your Pixel needs to match the rollout wave for its model and build.

There are three common ways to install Android 15 QPR1 on a Pixel. OTA is the simplest; sideload helps when OTA is stuck; factory images are for hard failures or deliberate clean installs.
Method 1: OTA update from Settings
This is the default route and usually the lowest-risk. It preserves your apps and data, provided the update is compatible with your current build.
- Settings → System → System update.
- Tap Check for update.
- When you see Android 15 QPR1 (with the December security update), tap Download.
- After download, tap Install.
- Let the phone reboot and finish the installation cycle uninterrupted.
If the device says you’re up to date, it may simply mean your build isn’t in the current wave. Try again later, especially after a fresh Wi‑Fi connection.
Method 2: Recovery mode sideload (when OTA is stuck)
Sideloading is useful when the phone won’t pull the OTA package for your build, but you have the correct update file. It can still preserve data depending on package type, but always read the package notes.

- Download the correct update ZIP for your device and store it locally on your computer.
- On the phone, power off completely.
- Enter Recovery mode (commonly via Power + Volume key combo; Pixel models differ).
- Select Apply update → Apply from ADB (or ADB sideload).
- On your computer, run an ADB sideload command similar to:
Use the platform-tools directory and run:
adb sideload update.zip
Replace update.zip with your downloaded ZIP filename. Let the transfer finish, then reboot when prompted.
Method 3: Factory image via Fastboot (cleanest for stubborn issues)
If OTA/sideload keeps failing (or you want a guaranteed clean base), a factory image install via Fastboot is the most deterministic option. It may wipe data depending on the flashing mode and scripts used.
General approach:
- Download the official factory image bundle for your exact Pixel model and region.
- Extract the archive on your computer.
- Enable developer options and USB debugging (if needed for earlier steps).
- Unlock bootloader if required (this typically wipes the device).
- Boot the phone into Fastboot mode.
- Flash using the provided scripts (often
flash-allor similar).
Important: Factory images require matching components. Flashing a build intended for another Pixel model or an incorrect region can break updates or boot. Follow the release package instructions exactly.
After you install: verify the update and confirm security patch level
Once Android 15 QPR1 is installed, verify it in two places: Android version/build details and the security patch level.
- Open Settings → About phone.
- Check Android version.
- Confirm Security update (Android security patch level) shows December.
- Optional but recommended: record your Build number for future reference.
If the patch level didn’t change, you might be on an intermediate build. In that case, revisit the System update page and check again for the final QPR1 component.
Troubleshooting when the update won’t install
OTA issues usually come down to connectivity, storage, incompatible base builds, or modified system state. Here’s what to try in a practical order.

- [Compatible] Only compatible with Google Pixel 10/Pixel 10 Pro phone. Precise cutouts for easy access to all ports, buttons, sensors and cameras. Sensitive buttons with good response, are easy to press.

Update won’t download
- Switch networks: move from Wi‑Fi to another Wi‑Fi or stable cellular (if your setup allows downloads on mobile).
- Restart Wi‑Fi: toggle Wi‑Fi off/on and reconnect.
- Free space: clear at least 2–4 GB on internal storage.
Update downloads but fails during install
- Reboot and retry once: some failures clear after a clean reboot.
- Check for error codes: if you see a code during failure, note it—error codes determine whether you should sideload or go factory.
- Use sideload if OTA repeatedly fails for your build.
Boot loop or unexpected behavior after install
If the phone can’t boot normally, don’t keep reboot-cycling. Use Recovery/Fastboot tools depending on what’s available.
- Try Recovery options: power into Recovery and look for Restart or any update/rollback options offered for your build.
- Restore a known-good state via factory image if you’re comfortable with flashing steps.
When in doubt, choose the approach that matches your comfort level. OTA failures are often recoverable; factory flashing is more disruptive but more definitive.
Common mistakes that cause failed installs or boot loops
- Using the wrong package: Sideloader/factory images must match your exact Pixel model.
- Interrupting power: Don’t unplug during install. A power drop can corrupt the update process.
- Running out of storage: Even if you can download, the install stage can still require extra space.
- Forgetting modifications: Rooting, custom recovery, or bootloader unlock state can block OTA or cause conflicts.
- Skipping verification: After install, confirm the security patch level changed to December.
Android 15 QPR1 vs prior releases: what to expect
QPR updates aren’t always about flashy new features. They’re typically about stability, performance, and bug fixes across system services and device integrations—plus security patching.
You may notice improvements in areas like:
- App and system reliability
- Battery behavior consistency
- Camera, connectivity, and notifications stability
Exact feature changes depend on build. If you care about specific fixes, capture your current build number before updating and compare it after install using your release notes source.
Privacy, security, and compatibility considerations
With the December security update included, you’re improving protection across Android. Still, after a major update, re-check security-critical settings.
- Biometrics: Confirm Face Unlock/Fingerprint works as expected.
- App permissions: Review location, microphone, and camera permissions for any apps you use for work.
- Banking and payments: If you use device-based verification, run a quick test in a safe environment.
- Carrier features: Some carrier-specific services can take a restart to re-register.
FAQs
How long does Android 15 QPR1 take to show up on my Pixel?
Rollouts typically arrive in waves, so it can take days for your device to be included. If you don’t see it, keep checking System update rather than repeatedly reinstalling older packages.

Will updating to Android 15 QPR1 erase my data?
Over-the-air installs usually preserve data. Recovery sideload and factory images can be more disruptive depending on the package and flashing script used, so back up first.
Can I install Android 15 QPR1 if my bootloader is unlocked?
Often you can, but behavior varies. OTA may fail or be skipped, and sideload/factory flashing becomes the more predictable path. Make sure you use the correct images for your exact build and device.
How do I confirm the December security update is actually installed?
Go to Settings → About phone and check Android security patch level. It should show a December date after the update completes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if the update keeps failing with an error code?
Write down the error code and try a different install method: first retry with a reboot and stable Wi‑Fi; then switch to recovery sideload if OTA fails repeatedly. If problems persist, use the official factory image for your model.
Bottom Line
Android 15 QPR1 rolling out to Pixel—with the December security update included—is a solid maintenance update to take once it reaches your device. OTA is the simplest route, but sideload and factory images give you reliable options when waves, connectivity, or build compatibility gets in the way.
Before you update, back up, charge up, and verify the security patch level afterward. That’s the difference between a routine upgrade and a frustrating install loop.
