What changed in Android 15
The update centers on the Home Controls screensaver content. Instead of a purely informational or default display, Android 15 can render weather details as part of the screensaver experience tied to your home setup.
In practical terms, the screensaver now depends on your location/weather permissions (or cached location settings) and a weather source configured for your device, so the screensaver can render conditions like temperature and/or forecasts during idle display.

What the Home Controls screensaver is (and why weather shows up)
Home Controls is Google’s home/device hub experience on Android—used to view and manage compatible smart home devices (and related automation states). The screensaver is the idle-state display that can surface useful context when your device is docked or otherwise in a “show mode” scenario.
Weather is a natural fit because it improves everyday utility: it helps you anticipate conditions when you’re away from your phone or when the device is in a common-use spot (bedside, kitchen, desk).
Prerequisites and compatibility checks
Before you troubleshoot settings, confirm your environment supports the weather-enabled screensaver UI.
1) Device on Android 15
Verify your OS version: Settings → About phone → Android version. You need Android 15 on the device where Home Controls screensaver is configured.
2) Home Controls enabled and set up
Make sure your Home Controls experience is active. If you haven’t configured compatible home devices or the Home app integration, some screensaver content paths may not appear.
3) Weather/location permissions
Weather typically requires either precise location, approximate location, or an equivalent location-mode permission the system grants to determine conditions. If permissions are denied, weather tiles often fall back to a blank state.
4) Google app and system components current
On many Android builds, the Home/Weather content rendering depends on system modules and Google components. Use Play Store → manage apps → Updates and update the following if you see them pending: Google app, Google Home, and any “Android System Intelligence”/system components your device lists.

Because Android 15 builds can differ by OEM skin and rollout level, the exact labels can shift slightly. The path below reflects the typical controls used by Android for Home/device screensaver behavior.
Step-by-step: enable the screensaver + weather content
- Open Settings.
- Go to Connected devices or Home (wording varies by device).
- Find Home Controls and open the related settings.
- Look for Screensaver (or Home Controls screensaver) and open it.
- Turn On (or enable the screensaver toggle).
- Find Show weather, Weather, or Weather details.
- Switch it to On.
- Confirm the weather location source: if prompted, choose your preferred location mode and allow the needed permission.
- Lock the device or wait for the screensaver trigger to test.
If you don’t see a dedicated toggle labeled “Show weather,” jump to Alternatives below—some builds merge weather into a single “content” control rather than a separate switch.

How to configure the weather details
Once weather display is enabled, Android typically pulls information from a location tied to your device or a manually selected place.
Pick location source (precise vs approximate)
Use Settings → Location and confirm location is enabled. If Android asks which mode to use for weather, choose the one that matches your preference (precise gives the best accuracy, approximate is lighter on privacy).
Set the weather place if your build supports it
Some Home/Weather flows let you choose a city or saved location. If your screensaver weather looks “stuck” on an old city, you may need to reselect the location in your weather settings.
Confirm the weather unit
Units often follow your system language/region. Check Settings → System → Language & region and any relevant Temperature or Units setting in the Weather-related area of your device.
If your screensaver shows Celsius when you expect Fahrenheit (or vice versa), this is the first place to correct it.
Troubleshooting when the screensaver won’t show weather
If the screensaver appears, but the weather card doesn’t render—or it’s blank—work through these fixes in order. Most issues come from permissions, stale caches, or mismatched device modes.
Check permissions first
- Go to Settings → Apps (or Privacy on some devices).
- Open Permissions and find the weather-related or location-related permission entries.
- Confirm location access is allowed for the apps/system services involved (commonly Google app / Google services / Location).
- Set the permission to Allow while using or Allow only this time if prompted. For screensaver behavior, “while using” may be insufficient depending on build.
When in doubt, temporarily set permissions to allow while using, then test immediately by triggering the screensaver.
Force location refresh
Open your weather app or a weather widget, and confirm it shows updated conditions. If it doesn’t, the issue is upstream: location or weather data isn’t updating.
Restart the system UI/services
For Android 15, a full restart is often faster than hunting per-service toggles. If you have time, reboot the phone and then test again.

Clear cache for relevant apps
If the screensaver uses cached weather content, a stale cache can cause blank cards.

- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select the likely weather/controls component (commonly Google, Google Home, or any app you use for Home Controls/Weather).
- Go to Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache (avoid “Clear data” unless you’re prepared to redo sign-in or setup).
- Reboot and retest.
Disable battery optimization for weather/control services
Battery optimization can delay background data refresh, especially in idle modes used by screensavers.
- Go to Settings → Battery.
- Open Battery optimization (or App battery usage).
- Find the relevant app(s).
- Set to Unrestricted or “Don’t optimize” if your device offers it.
- Test by waiting for the screensaver to activate.
Verify screensaver trigger conditions
Some screensaver modes only activate under specific states (charging, docking, low activity windows, or particular display timeout behavior). If weather doesn’t show, confirm the screensaver is actually triggering.
- Plug in the device if the mode is charging/dock dependent.
- Confirm Settings → Display screensaver/off-screen behavior hasn’t been restricted.
- Check Do Not Disturb or focus modes that may suppress always-on idle visuals.
Try a clean test environment
If you recently changed home device accounts or switched Google accounts on the phone, test with one account only.
- Remove any temporary or secondary accounts from the device (or disable their access).
- Ensure your primary account is active in the Home app.
- Return to the Home Controls screensaver and test again.
Privacy and data usage considerations
Weather-on-screensaver changes the privacy footprint because it makes weather display contingent on location (or an approved location proxy). Even if the screensaver is “just UI,” the underlying system still needs data to determine conditions.
What data may be involved
- Location: approximate or precise GPS/Wi‑Fi/cell-derived location to pick the correct forecast.
- Weather metadata: cached forecast results and timestamps.
- Usage context: screensaver rendering depends on idle state and may correlate with device activity.
How to reduce data exposure
- Prefer approximate location when available for weather.
- Disable background location for apps you don’t need, but note this can blank the weather tile.
- Review Settings → Location and App permissions regularly.
If you want weather but not precise location, check for a “select city” option in your weather settings; that often avoids continuous location access.

Some Android 15 devices won’t show the “show weather” toggle yet. That’s usually a rollout/feature-flag issue or a UI variant in the OEM customization layer.
1) Use a weather widget that matches your homescreen style
Widgets are the most reliable way to keep weather visible. Add a weather widget from the Weather app or from the Google app’s widget options, then style it to look like your screensaver card.
2) Use lock screen / always-on display weather (if available)
Many OEMs mirror weather on the lock screen or always-on display. Check Settings → Lock screen or Display for “weather” or “information” tiles.

3) Use Home app weather cards (manual check)
If Home Controls screensaver won’t show weather on your build, open the Home app or the relevant Home/Weather feed and pin a weather card there.
4) Wait for staged rollout
If you confirmed you’re on Android 15 and still can’t find any weather toggle under Home Controls, the feature may be staged. Keep system and Google components updated via Play Store and watch for the setting to appear after a few days.
Common mistakes
- Location permission denied: the screensaver may render but weather stays blank.
- Battery optimization too aggressive: weather updates don’t refresh in the idle window.
- Wrong Google account: Home Controls may be tied to a different account than your weather personalization.
- Assuming the screensaver has triggered: some modes only appear when charging/docked—test under the right conditions.
- Overwriting settings with a new forecast location: switching city/units in one place doesn’t always update the screensaver immediately.
FAQ
Why is my Home Controls screensaver showing no weather?
The most common causes are missing location permission, battery optimization blocking background refresh, or the weather tile failing to render due to stale cache. Check location settings and then update/clear cache for the related Google/Home component.
Can I show weather without precise location?
Often yes, if your device offers approximate location for weather or lets you select a specific city. If the only option in your build requires precise location, you’ll need to trade accuracy for functionality or use a widget/lock screen alternative.
Recommended Free Tools
Will the weather update in real time on the screensaver?
It’s usually not truly “live” minute-by-minute. Android commonly updates at intervals based on background refresh rules, your battery settings, and when the device is active/charging.
Does this work on every Android 15 phone?
No. OEMs and feature rollouts can delay or hide the weather toggle. If you don’t see it after updating system components and the Google app, your device may be on a later rollout wave.
Where do I change units (Celsius vs Fahrenheit)?
Units typically follow system region settings or a temperature unit setting inside Weather. Check Settings → System → Language & region and any temperature/unit preference inside your weather-related app settings.
Bottom Line
Android 15’s Home Controls screensaver can show weather, but it depends on permissions, refresh behavior, and whether your device build has the feature enabled. If you can’t get the weather tile to appear, start with location permission, then battery optimization, then cache and component updates.
