Because those pages contain no error or CAPTCHA, a tracker can record them as genuine rankings and report a dramatic but temporary drop. Nozzle’s October 10, 2026 analysis found this pattern in 8.0% of sampled search results from September 13 onward, compared with 0.17% in its August 20–September 9 baseline.
What “poisoned SERPs” are
A poisoned search-engine-results page (SERP) looks normal to an automated fetcher, but its listings do not match the keyword’s usual results. Nozzle classified a SERP as poisoned when fewer than half of the keyword’s usual sites appeared and those sites returned on a later fetch. The practical effect is a false ranking loss: a site can vanish from a tracker’s top 10 while remaining visible to searchers.

Nozzle analyzed 27.5 million SERPs across 49 countries, devices and location targets, covering more than 660,000 keywords with at least one poisoned result. The 8.0% rate is from Nozzle’s representative customer dataset, not an independently audited, industry-wide measurement.

Requests began failing in large numbers around September 13. The first poisoned pages appeared around September 20, reached 24.9% on September 27 and 27.0% on September 29, then fluctuated between roughly 4% and 11% from October 1 through October 9. Nozzle reported that 80% of poisoning spells lasted only one SERP, which helps explain why a single daily check can create a misleading chart spike.

What Google swapped on the page
Compared with other SERPs for the same keywords, poisoned pages retained just 20.7% of the previous SERP’s sites, versus 88.5% before the anomaly. Social and forum domains occupied more top-10 positions:

The pattern is not simply a random omission of one website. A large portion of the normal result set is replaced, often by a different mix of social pages and forums. Nozzle also observed that a poisoned page may lack an AI Overview, but that absence is only a supporting clue, not proof.

Why this may be happening
Nozzle interprets the timing and request failures as an anti-scraping response aimed at AI scraping and grounding systems, with rank trackers caught by the same controls. That is an interpretation, not a confirmed statement from Google. Google’s public documentation says its ranking systems sort through vast numbers of pages to show relevant, useful results and that advertisers receive no special treatment in organic ranking. Its March 2024 guidance describes core and spam updates as quality improvements and says policy-violating sites may rank lower or disappear. Those principles neither confirm nor deny the specific tracker-facing behavior observed in 2026.

Do not treat one anomalous tracker fetch as proof that Google demoted your site. Use a sequence of checks instead:

- Replay the keyword history. Compare the fetched page with the keyword’s usual top-10 sites over several weeks. A single day can itself be poisoned, so establish the normal result set before judging a change.
- Check persistence. Look for the same disappearance on later fetches and across multiple days. Nozzle found that 77.9% of poisoned SERPs had their usual sites back within three days, while 80% of poisoning spells lasted one SERP.
- Cross-check first-party performance data. Review Google Search Console impressions and clicks for the affected queries and pages. If those measures remain stable while a tracker reports that the site vanished, treat the tracker result as suspect rather than immediately changing pages or links.
- Inspect page composition. Shorter pagination, an unusually high share of social domains, fewer familiar sites and a missing AI Overview can support the poisoning hypothesis. None of these clues alone proves it.
- Record the fetch conditions. Preserve country, device, location target, timestamp and the full captured SERP. A result can differ legitimately by those dimensions, and the same details are needed to reproduce an anomaly.
What to demand from a rank-tracking workflow
Teams evaluating tracker data during this episode should assess five capabilities rather than relying on a single headline ranking:
- Historical SERP replay and anomaly detection: the system should show the normal result set and flag a sudden replacement of most listings.
- Coverage by country, device and local target: broad coverage helps distinguish a localized fetch problem from a genuine, wider change.
- Recovery handling: one-fetch outliers should be suppressed, labeled or rechecked before they alter reports.
- Agreement with Search Console and analytics: ranking alerts should be compared with impressions, clicks and traffic, not read in isolation.
- Fetch transparency: vendors should disclose blocked requests, route changes and data-quality incidents so customers can judge whether a drop is real.
What this means for SEO decisions
A one-day report that your rankings disappeared can now be a data-quality incident rather than an SEO event. Delay irreversible responses—such as rewriting pages, removing internal links or abandoning a keyword—until the result persists, first-party performance moves in the same direction and repeated fetches show the same competitors. Conversely, a sustained change across tracker rechecks, Search Console and traffic remains worth investigating as a genuine ranking or indexing issue.

The observed rates may change as Google adjusts its controls and vendors alter their collection methods. Recheck current tracker notices and anomaly rates before using this episode to set reporting thresholds or judge campaign performance.
