An Operational Playbook for the FomoPeek Event: Inventory, Version Hygiene, Verification

A practical playbook for the FomoPeek incident covering affected builds 1.1 and 1.2, device and infrastructure inventories, minimum iOS version checks on real devices, and what uninstalling does and does not fix.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For security and IT operations teams, the FomoPeek event is first an inventory problem. You need to know which iPhones and iPads run which FomoPeek build, which devices sit outside management, and whether your minimum iOS policy is enforced on real hardware rather than only in a console. The analysis published by SlowMist with OKX Security establishes which FomoPeek versions carried the reported malicious modules. It does not establish how many devices were affected, and it does not establish that any particular device was compromised. Keep three questions separate throughout: what the code can do (capability), who could have been exposed to it (exposure), and what evidence shows it ran on a specific device (confirmed compromise).

What the investigation establishes and what it does not

SlowMist and OKX Security analyzed historical FomoPeek IPA files obtained from official App Store channels. The SlowMist write-up, published in September 2026 and hosted on Binance Square, is the primary technical source for the incident. The version history it reports is below.

FomoPeek version Build Status of the reported modules, per SlowMist
1.0 Not stated Did not include the modules in question
1.1 105 Introduced the modules on September 9, 2026
1.2 110 Continued to include the modules after September 12, 2026 (exact release date not stated)
1.3 111 Removed the modules on September 17, 2026

In practical terms, versions 1.1 and 1.2 are the builds to search for in your records. Version 1.3 is the first build the report describes without the modules, and version 1.0 is described as not containing them.

Capability: what the modules are reported to do

The report identifies the modules as apptrace and libapptracecore. It describes remote configuration, a kernel exploit, a sandbox escape, access to the Keychain, and cross-app data collection. These are capabilities described from code analysis. They describe what the software was built to attempt, not what happened on any given phone.

Declared iOS coverage is not a count of vulnerable devices

The report describes eight exploit strategies. It also states that the framework’s code declares coverage for iOS 12.0–18.7.2 and iOS 26.0–26.1. SlowMist’s wording on this point is: “The framework declares at the code level that the system version coverage is iOS 12.0–18.7.2 and iOS 26.0–26.1, indicating that its attack targets are not limited to low-version systems or old devices.”

Read that sentence as a description of the framework’s declared support logic. It is not a count of phones that are vulnerable, not proof that exploitation succeeded on every supported device, and not a statement about whether a given iOS release is currently patched. SlowMist’s dynamic test first observed the command-and-control response with exploit_enabled set to false. The researchers then changed the relevant switches in an isolated environment to examine the later execution chain. The exploit results therefore come from a modified test setup, not from an unmodified installation.

What the isolated test observed

In the same isolated environment, SlowMist reports obtaining a remote collection manifest that targets 19 wallet and notes applications. It also reports capturing a request that packaged and uploaded an Apple Notes container. These are the researchers’ test results. They do not show that every installation collected those files, that every listed application was targeted on every victim device, or that all FomoPeek users were affected.

The playbook

The steps below convert the incident facts into controls you can check. They assume you already run mobile device management (MDM) for iPhones and iPads. Where you do not, the steps still apply, but the device view will need a different system of record.

Step 1: Build two separate inventories

Maintain a device view drawn from management data. For each enrolled phone or tablet, record the reported OS build, compliance state, owner, and last check-in time. Maintain a second, external infrastructure view built from authorized observations of your own address space and domains. Record the collection time and the owning inventory for every asset in either view.

Do not merge these views into a single exposure count. A DEV Community playbook article dated September 22, 2026 quotes a ZoomEye search executed September 21, 2026 at 12:01 UTC that returned 7,279,754 matches for app="Apple". That is a broad fingerprint result for a generic query. It is not a count of FomoPeek installations, vulnerable devices, or compromised organizational assets, and it should not be reported as an impact figure.

Step 2: Classify infrastructure and assign owners

Group the visible external infrastructure by function. Management and enrollment endpoints, software distribution, and build services should be reviewed first, because they control device policy and the software that reaches devices. Contextual assets, such as marketing or unrelated web properties, can follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each item, record four things: the owner, whether internet reachability is actually required, and the system of record that should contain the asset. An asset that has no owner or no system of record is the first thing to resolve, even if it looks minor.

Step 3: Find devices outside the compliance picture

Reconcile the management inventory against procurement, access, and assignment records. Look specifically for two groups: devices that are missing from management entirely, and devices that are enrolled but have stale check-in times. A minimum-version rule cannot protect a phone the organization cannot see, and a dashboard that shows green for enrolled devices says nothing about the ones that never appear in it.

Step 4: Set the minimum version and verify it on devices

Set a minimum supported iOS version through your device-management controls where they are available. A configured policy is not proof of enforcement, so verify it using the procedure in the next section.

Step 5: Repeat collection on a set cadence

Run both collections again after onboarding, device transfer, restore, a significant software change, and at a routine interval tied to how fast your fleet changes. The DEV Community playbook does not prescribe a universal interval, so choose one based on your rate of change and your response requirements. Compare each run with the previous one and investigate additions, removals, version regressions, and stale records.

Verifying that the minimum iOS version is enforced

Enforcement and reporting are different things. A policy can be assigned while devices continue to report old builds, or while some devices never check in to receive it. Verify the policy against the devices themselves:

  • Select a sample that includes devices from each major ownership group, each device model family you run, and at least some devices with recent check-ins and some with stale ones.
  • Read the build reported for each sampled device directly from the management console, and compare it with the minimum version you set.
  • For any sampled device below the minimum, check whether the policy was delivered, whether the device was online to receive it, and whether the device is in a group the policy actually targets.
  • Confirm that devices absent from the sample, including those flagged as stale in Step 3, are accounted for rather than assumed compliant.
  • Record the result with a timestamp. A verification that is not repeated tells you about one moment, not about the fleet.

Does uninstalling or updating make a device safe?

No. Removing FomoPeek or moving to a later build does not reverse data that may already have left a device. Upgrading to version 1.3 or deleting the app is a containment step, not a remediation of prior use.

The first question for each affected device is whether version 1.1 or 1.2 was ever installed on it. Your management data may show installed-app information where your MDM collects it. Where it does not, ask the user directly and record the answer. A device that never had version 1.1 or 1.2 falls outside this section, but it still belongs under the minimum-version checks above.

Handling users who had version 1.1 or 1.2

SlowMist recommends the following steps for affected users. Adapt them to your incident-response procedures, and preserve relevant evidence before deleting anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop using the app, and do not reinstall it.
  2. Treat any secret that was used on the device as potentially exposed.
  3. Move assets using a separate clean device and new wallet credentials.
  4. Inspect transaction and authorization history for the affected accounts.
  5. Change the credentials that are relevant to those accounts.
  6. Retain evidence from the device and the accounts.
  7. Contact the relevant platform if suspicious activity appears.

What the current evidence does not settle

Several questions cannot be answered from the sources available in September 2026, and they should not be filled with assumptions:

  • Apple patch status. The sources do not establish which current iOS release closes each reported exploit path. Check Apple’s current security documentation before making any present-tense statement about patch status.
  • App availability. The sources do not establish whether any FomoPeek version is currently offered on the App Store. Verify this directly before advising staff.
  • Affected population. No incident-wide figure for affected users, successful exploitation, or losses was found in the primary analysis. Use your own device and account records to scope your organization’s exposure.
  • Named attribution. No named individual’s statement was captured. The primary analysis is attributed to the SlowMist and OKX Security teams.
  • Secondary coverage. An AVOID.NET incident page dated September 23, 2026 adds summary context. Where it conflicts with the SlowMist analysis, the primary analysis should be treated as the stronger source.

Your organization’s device and app records are the only source that can establish whether FomoPeek was present, and on which builds, in your fleet.
