An Injection That Moved Is Not an Injection That Was Fixed

An environment variable is not an automatic fix for GitHub Actions injection. Trace untrusted values through every handoff and inspect their final use.

Moving an untrusted GitHub Actions expression out of an inline run: script removes one risky interpolation pattern; it does not prove the value is safe. Follow it through every workflow and action handoff, then inspect the final operation that consumes it. If that operation reparses the value as shell code, the injection risk may still be present.

Why moving an expression is not enough

When an untrusted GitHub Actions expression is inserted directly into a run: script, GitHub expands it before Bash executes the script. If an attacker controls the text, it can alter the script rather than remain an ordinary value.

Putting the expression in an environment variable changes where that interpolation occurs, but it does not settle what happens next. The value may pass from a workflow variable to an action input, into an action environment variable, through a script, and finally into a process invocation. A later step that uses eval or builds a shell command around the value can turn it back into executable syntax.

That end-to-end distinction is the central point of Vinicius Pereira’s September 22, 2026 article, “An injection that moved is not an injection that was fixed”. Its examples illustrate a review method; they are not an independent audit of a disclosed incident.

Trace the value to its terminal use

Review the whole path, not just the line where the expression first appears. Record each transformation and boundary, and ask whether the value is still passed as data at each step.

  1. Start at the expression. Identify whether an untrusted value is interpolated directly into a run: script or assigned to an environment variable.
  2. Follow every handoff. Track the value through workflow variables, action inputs, action environment variables, and scripts. Do not assume a variable name or a move between steps changes the value’s trust level.
  3. Inspect transformations. Look for quoting, concatenation, command construction, output-file writes, or any operation that can change how the value is interpreted.
  4. Check the consumer. Determine how the final process receives the value. Passing it as a discrete argument is materially different from assembling a command string and asking a shell to parse it.
  5. Keep the trace with the finding. A scanner verdict without the path leaves the key question unanswered. Pereira puts it this way: “A verdict without the chain is an opinion. A verdict with the chain is a reading assignment.”

What a safer process boundary looks like

The article contrasts shell reparsing with a JavaScript example that passes the value as one element of an argument array to spawn() while shell execution is disabled. In that shape, the value is delivered as an argument rather than inserted into a command string for a shell to interpret.

By contrast, using eval or constructing a command string for execSync can reintroduce parsing. The important question is not simply whether a value was placed in an environment variable, but whether any later step turns it back into code. This is an explanation of the article’s examples, not a guarantee that a particular workflow is safe without reviewing its full context.

Outputs can be an additional injection route

GitHub Actions output files introduce a separate risk from shell-command construction. As Pereira describes it, a fixed delimiter used to mark multiline output can be closed by attacker-controlled content. A newline in a simple key=value form can also add output keys. Both cases can let untrusted content affect how later steps read outputs.

  • PRECISION & CONTROL Designed with a 60-unit dosing dial and clear viewing window for smooth, controlled adjustments and consistent use.

  • GXZ HEALTH QUALITY Designed with attention to detail and quality standards for customers seeking reliable, reusable injection accessories.
  • COMPACT & TRAVEL-FRIENDLY Slim, lightweight design fits easily into a pocket, bag, or case—ideal for home or travel use.

For multiline output, the article describes using an unpredictable delimiter so attacker-controlled content is less able to terminate the value early. Review the output-writing format as well as the final command invocation; keeping a value out of an inline script does not address every way it can affect a workflow.

How to read taint-trail’s findings

Pereira positions taint-trail as a way to follow values after a direct expression-in-script finding, and recommends zizmor for broader workflow auditing. That distinction reflects the author’s description in the article, not an independently verified comparison of current project documentation or tool coverage.

The article describes these taint-trail outcome labels:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • SHELL: the trace reaches code reparsing, such as a shell-oriented execution path.
  • SPOOF: the trace reaches a possible output-file key injection pattern.
  • SUSPECT: a JavaScript finding is heuristic and warrants review rather than being treated as established full dataflow analysis.
  • DIES: the tracked value reaches an ending the tool treats as value-preserving rather than code execution.
  • UNKNOWN: the tool cannot follow an opaque, unreadable, or unsupported path, so it reports uncertainty rather than guessing.

These labels are useful only alongside their trace. A result should be interpreted in terms of the path the tool actually followed and the parts it could not inspect.

Coverage limits and what a clean result cannot prove

The article describes taint-trail’s Bash matching as pattern-based rather than parser-based, and its JavaScript matching as heuristic rather than full dataflow analysis. It also says Docker actions are opaque and reusable workflows are followed one level. Consequently, a path outside the tool’s supported shapes may not be classified as a dangerous or safe ending.

The author lists shell forms the tool does not match, including command substitution in command position, set -- $V followed by "$@", awk using system(), and eval reached through a variable. For such unsupported or unreadable paths, the article says the tool reports UNKNOWN instead of inferring a verdict. An absence of a flagged result is therefore not proof that every path is safe.

Pereira also reports that taint-trail has one runtime dependency, PyYAML, and uses the network only when its optional --fetch behavior is requested. Those are implementation details reported in the article, not independently verified current package facts.

Use complementary checks, then review the chain

The article’s suggested division of labor is to use zizmor for wider workflow auditing and taint-trail to examine what happens after a direct interpolation finding. It does not provide a full product comparison or benchmarks. For any scanner, judge its result against the specific question the workflow review needs to answer:

  • Does it detect direct expression interpolation in scripts?
  • Does it follow values across workflow and action boundaries?
  • Does it identify shell reparsing and output-file spoofing patterns?
  • Are JavaScript findings heuristic, or established through deeper dataflow analysis?
  • What does it report when an action or syntax is opaque?
  • Can its reported behavior be checked against current project documentation?

Use tool output to find and organize paths, not as a substitute for examining the terminal use. The security question remains whether untrusted input stays data all the way to the process that consumes it.
