Yes. In June 2021, an Amazon Prime Air MK27 test drone crashed near Pendleton, Oregon, and a fire from its lithium battery spread to several acres of wheat stubble, according to OPB/Northwest News Network’s account of FAA incident records. The reported sequence points to a motor failure, but the sources available do not establish a final investigation finding on the crash’s cause.
What happened in the Amazon drone crash?
OPB/Northwest News Network reported in 2022 that FAA incident records described an Amazon MK27 test drone flying at about 160 feet near Pendleton when it experienced a motor failure and fell. The aircraft’s lithium battery caught fire on impact, and the fire spread to several acres of wheat stubble. These details come from news reporting about FAA records; they are not a direct review of the underlying incident report. OPB/Northwest News Network’s report

Which Amazon drone was involved?
The aircraft was an MK27, not Amazon’s newer MK30. The distinction matters because later regulatory and company material discusses different aircraft and operations.
- MK27: The model identified in the June 2021 Pendleton crash reporting.
- MK27-2: An aircraft variant covered by FAA environmental assessment material and U.S. Department of Transportation special-class airworthiness criteria published in 2022. The FAA assessment describes a six-propeller aircraft that can transition between vertical and horizontal flight, with a maximum allowable takeoff weight of 91.5 pounds and maximum allowable package weight of 4.9 pounds. Those specifications are for the MK27-2 and should not be treated as specifications for the crash aircraft. FAA Pendleton environmental assessment U.S. Department of Transportation airworthiness criteria
- MK30: The model Amazon identifies on its current Prime Air operations page. A 2025 FAA re-evaluation for Pendleton discusses MK30 testing and training operations, building on the earlier assessment of MK27-2 testing. Neither document, by itself, establishes what changed in response to the 2021 crash. FAA environmental documents Amazon Prime Air
What later safety and regulatory information does—and does not—show
Amazon says Prime Air is an FAA-authorized Part 135 certificated air carrier. Its current operations page says flight monitors track operations and that aircraft can abandon a delivery and return or select a safe landing location during contingencies. Those are descriptions of current procedures, not independent evidence of how the 2021 crash was investigated or addressed. Amazon Prime Air
