For everyday outdoor use, an AMOLED smartwatch advertised at around 2,000 nits peak is a sensible starting point. If you regularly use your watch in harsh, direct sun, consider models advertised at 3,000 nits or more. These are practical shortlist guideposts inferred from manufacturers’ specifications—not guaranteed visibility thresholds. A peak figure also does not tell you how bright the always-on display stays.
What does a smartwatch’s nit rating tell you?
A nit is a unit manufacturers use to describe display brightness. Smartwatch specifications commonly give a peak, maximum, or “up to” figure. Treat it as a stated maximum, not proof that the watch sustains that brightness in every display mode or on an always-on watch face.

For example, Apple lists the Apple Watch Series 12 at 2,000 nits peak brightness and 1 nit minimum brightness. Samsung advertises the Galaxy Watch8 at up to 3,000 nits and describes its Super AMOLED screen as viewable in bright sunlight. Those figures come from separate manufacturer pages, not a shared cross-brand test protocol. Apple Watch technical specifications; Samsung Galaxy Watch8.
How many nits should you look for?
For ordinary outdoor use: around 2,000 nits peak
Around 2,000 nits peak is a reasonable starting point if you want to check notifications, the time, or workout information outdoors. It is a practical interpretation of the manufacturer specifications, not a scientifically established cutoff or a promise that every screen will be legible in every lighting condition. Apple lists 2,000 nits peak for Series 12, while Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 launch material also specified 2,000 nits peak. Samsung Galaxy Watch6 launch announcement.

For frequent harsh sun: consider 3,000 nits or more
If you often rely on your watch in strong, direct sunlight, a model advertised at 3,000 nits or above is worth shortlisting. Samsung advertises the Galaxy Watch8 at up to 3,000 nits. Apple announced a 3,000-nit maximum for Apple Watch Ultra 2, describing it as intended to improve readability in harsh sunlight. These are manufacturer claims and specifications, not evidence that one watch will always be easier to read than another. Apple’s September 2023 Apple Watch Ultra 2 announcement.
Why peak brightness is not the whole story
The official specifications reviewed do not provide a common always-on brightness figure across these watches. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 launch material mentions an Always On Display brightness adjustment feature, but that does not establish a comparable brightness level for its always-on screen. Check the exact model’s documentation and settings to learn how its display behaves when your wrist is down, whether a gesture is needed to wake it, and what automatic brightness controls are available.

Also consider battery expectations for the display mode you intend to use. The cited manufacturer pages do not quantify a comparable brightness-versus-battery tradeoff, so a peak nit figure alone cannot tell you how long a watch will last with a particular brightness setting.

AMOLED is not the only display type to consider. Garmin lists both AMOLED watches and models with “Sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP)” displays. That makes MIP a relevant alternative to compare if outdoor glanceability is your main priority; Garmin’s comparison does not establish that MIP is always more readable than AMOLED.
