The Amex trifecta is an informal U.S. credit-card strategy combining the American Express Gold Card, The Platinum Card from American Express, and Blue Business Plus. The idea is to use Gold for eligible dining and U.S. supermarket purchases, Platinum for travel earning and benefits, and Blue Business Plus for eligible everyday purchases outside stronger bonus categories. It is not an official Amex bundle—and its currently listed annual fees add up to $1,220 before you count any benefits you personally use.
Which cards make up the Amex trifecta?
The combination pairs two consumer cards with a business card. Each has a different intended role, and its rewards depend on purchase eligibility, category limits, and—in some cases—where you book.

How the three-card strategy works
Use Gold where its bonus categories apply
The intended first stop for eligible restaurant and U.S. supermarket purchases is Gold. The category definitions matter: the advertised rates do not apply to every food purchase or every store, and spending beyond the stated calendar-year caps earns at a lower rate. For other eligible purchases, Gold’s page lists 1X, except for the separate flight and prepaid-hotel categories described in its terms.

Use Platinum for qualifying travel and benefits you can access
Platinum’s earning rate is tied to eligible travel booked through American Express Travel, while its benefits may depend on qualifying bookings, enrollment, or other terms. The 1,550+ lounge figure is Amex’s stated Global Lounge Collection count, not a promise that every lounge will admit every cardholder on every trip. The hotel statement credits likewise have qualifying-booking rules; their stated maximum is not the same as cash you will necessarily save.
Use Blue Business Plus for eligible uncategorized purchases
Blue Business Plus is intended to earn 2X on eligible spending that would otherwise earn less, until its annual $50,000 threshold is reached. It is not simply a third consumer card: confirm that you meet the issuer’s business-card eligibility requirements and are comfortable managing a separate business account. Eligible AmexTravel.com purchases receive 2X but are excluded from the stated cap.

What do the annual fees add up to?
At the issuer-listed U.S. annual fees reviewed in October 2026, Gold costs $325, Platinum $895, and Blue Business Plus $0: $1,220 in listed annual fees combined. That is the gross cost of holding the three cards, not a calculation of net value. A statement credit only offsets a fee to the extent that you would make the qualifying purchase anyway and can use the benefit under its terms. Do not count a credit at face value if it changes your spending or goes unused.
Is the Amex trifecta worth it for you?
It may suit someone with meaningful eligible restaurant and U.S. supermarket spending, enough travel to use Platinum’s benefits, and a preference for Membership Rewards options over simple cash back. It is a weaker fit if the fees are hard to justify from benefits you would naturally use, your qualifying spend is limited, you want one simple account, or you might carry a balance. Rewards do not compensate for interest costs; avoid treating the strategy as worthwhile if you cannot pay balances as required.

Before choosing, work through these questions using your own spending and travel patterns:
- What is the fee after benefits you would genuinely use? Count only qualifying credits and perks that match purchases you would make without the card.
- How much spend qualifies for the advertised categories? Separate restaurant and U.S. supermarket purchases from other spending, and account for each calendar-year cap.
- Will Platinum’s travel terms fit your habits? Consider how often you travel, which airports and lounges you use, and whether you can book eligible hotels or flights through the required channels.
- Can you use Membership Rewards effectively? Your result depends on available redemption choices and the value of the alternative you would otherwise choose.
- Are you comfortable with the business-card role? Check eligibility and consider the account-management implications before including Blue Business Plus.
How much are Membership Rewards points worth?
There is no universal cash value for a Membership Rewards point. Amex describes options that include eligible travel, gift cards, statement credits, and transfers to participating airline and hotel programs. Transfer value depends on the destination, award availability, itinerary, and the redemption you are comparing it with. Check the specific program’s transfer ratio, timing, and terms immediately before transferring; partner lists and conditions can change. The live Gold and Blue Business Plus pages reviewed in October 2026 stated different partner counts—20 on Gold and 19 on Blue Business Plus—so neither figure should be treated as a permanent total for the overall rewards program. What to verify before applying or keeping the cards
- Confirm current annual fees, earning rates, caps, and category definitions on each live product page.
- Read the terms for booking channels, qualifying hotel credits, lounge access, and any required enrollment.
- Review business-card eligibility and account terms for Blue Business Plus.
- Estimate your value using benefits and rewards you can realistically use, rather than headline maximums or a fixed assumed point value.
