That does not mean fewer people read any books at all: a separate survey finds the share who read a book in the past year has been relatively stable since 2011. In the Bay Area, Silent Book Club gatherings offer a low-pressure way to read alongside other people—with no assigned title or required discussion.
What the reading decline actually measures
A 2025 peer-reviewed analysis of American Time Use Survey data found that the share of Americans who read for pleasure on an average day fell from 28% in 2004 to 16% in 2023. The study covers 2003–2023, excluding 2020 from its trend figures. Its definition of reading for personal interest includes books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks and reading on an e-reader. The study, published in iScience, measures daily participation—not whether someone read at least one book during a year.
There is a second, more nuanced finding: among people who did read for pleasure, average time spent reading rose slightly, from 1 hour 23 minutes in 2003 to 1 hour 37 minutes in 2023. That is an average for readers on the days captured by the study, not for all Americans. Taken together, the results suggest fewer people are reading on a typical day, while those who do read may spend somewhat longer doing it.
How book reading can be stable while daily reading falls
A 2026 Pew Research Center report says the overall share of Americans who read a book in the previous 12 months has been relatively stable since 2011, and print remains the most commonly read format. Pew’s report and the time-use study are not contradictory: they ask about different activities over different periods.

| Measure | What it asks or records | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| American Time Use Survey analysis | Whether a person read for personal interest on an average day, based on time-use data | Daily participation fell over the study period; the measure includes more than books. |
| Pew Research Center report | Whether a person read any book in the previous 12 months, according to survey responses | The past-year share has been relatively stable since 2011; print is the most commonly read format. |
One measure captures a recurring everyday behavior; the other counts whether someone read a book at least once within a year. Neither can stand in for the other, and neither describes the popularity of a particular local club.
What a Silent Book Club gathering is like
The format is simple: bring your own book, read quietly in the company of others, and talk afterward only if you want to. There is no shared assigned title to finish before the event and no expectation that attendees arrive with an interpretation ready. Lyn Davidson, adult services manager at the San Francisco Public Library, described it to Axios as having “no set agenda, no assignment to all read the same book, no pressure to come up with clever ‘takes,’” Axios reported.

That makes “a book club without homework” a useful description of the appeal. The phrase “introvert happy hour” is another way the gatherings have been framed, but it is an informal label, not a measured claim about introverts. The format can suit anyone who wants company without having to make conversation the main event.
Where Bay Area groups have been reported
Axios’s August 2025 report described Silent Book Club gatherings at San Francisco Public Library branches as well as cafes, bookstores and breweries around the Bay Area. It named the Richmond branch, where Davidson and adult services librarian Marina Sobolevskaya were involved, and noted the Chinatown branch’s club began in 2021. These are examples reported at that time, not confirmation that any particular group still meets on the same schedule.

A feature published by Next City Digest in August 2026 traces Silent Book Club’s founding to San Francisco in 2012. It reports more than 2,200 chapters in 70 countries. Those are figures published by the feature at that date, rather than a live, independently verified count. The same article recounts founder Guinevere de la Mare’s wish for “a book club without homework,” and says her friend Laura Gluhanich replied, “Let’s do it.” The feature presents these as recollections of the club’s beginnings, not contemporaneous transcripts. The reported Bay Area examples and the club’s reported international reach show that quiet group reading has found an audience. They do not establish a measured local growth rate, or overturn the national finding about average-day reading. The more modest conclusion is that the two trends can coexist: reading for pleasure on a given day is less common than it was, while some readers are choosing a social format that asks little of them beyond bringing a book.
