The October 3, 2026 Motley Fool article behind this topic names IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS), and Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI). It presents three different approaches to quantum computing—not proof that any of them will make investors wealthy. The article reports company developments and commercial activity, but does not provide the comparable financial or technical evidence needed to identify a best investment.
How the three companies differ
The article’s central distinction is strategic: IonQ is described as building a broad quantum platform, D-Wave as selling quantum annealing while pursuing gate-model systems, and Rigetti as developing superconducting quantum computers with a full-stack approach. Those descriptions help explain what each company is trying to build; they do not establish which technology or stock will succeed.
| Company | Approach described in the article | Reported development |
|---|---|---|
| IonQ | Quantum computing, networking, and security | Reported acquisition of SkyWater Technology to expand manufacturing; Superion 256 deployment planned at Nvidia’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center for hybrid quantum-classical work |
| D-Wave Quantum | Commercial quantum annealing, with gate-model systems also in development | Reported January close of the Quantum Circuits acquisition, including its dual-rail qubit design |
| Rigetti Computing | Superconducting qubits and an approach spanning hardware, software, and infrastructure | Reported hybrid-system project with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, involving a 9-qubit Novera system |
These are claims reported by The Motley Fool on October 3, 2026, and have not been independently verified here against company filings, official releases, customer announcements, or grant documents.
What the article reports about each stock
IonQ: broad platform and manufacturing expansion
The article portrays IonQ as extending beyond quantum computers into networking and security. It reports that the SkyWater Technology acquisition would expand IonQ’s manufacturing capabilities. It also reports 2026 revenue guidance of $450 million to $460 million, including SkyWater’s contribution, and says IonQ’s Superion 256 is to be deployed at Nvidia’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center for hybrid quantum-classical work. The article does not establish the acquisition terms or whether the planned deployment has occurred; the guidance figure is not independently confirmed here.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
D-Wave: annealing business and gate-model ambitions
The article describes D-Wave’s commercial emphasis as quantum annealing and cites announced work involving AT&T, Nasdaq’s Verafin, and NTT DOCOMO. It also says the company is developing gate-model systems and closed its acquisition of Quantum Circuits in January. The acquisition’s dual-rail qubit design is presented as part of the strategic rationale. D-Wave CEO Alan Baratz is quoted in the article describing that design as “the best of both worlds”; no independent transcript or company release confirming the quotation was established.
Customer or partner announcements can indicate interest and potential use, but the article does not quantify recurring revenue, contract economics, or the extent to which those projects contribute to D-Wave’s financial results.

Rigetti: superconducting systems and a research project
The article presents Rigetti’s strategy as integrating superconducting hardware with software and infrastructure. It reports a collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center in which Rigetti is expected to provide a 9-qubit Novera system for research and development. It also reports an agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $100 million to accelerate superconducting quantum-computing research and development. The article does not provide independently verified agreement terms, payment timing, or evidence that the maximum amount has been disbursed.
What the reported momentum does—and does not—show
Acquisitions, customer announcements, planned deployments, and government support are relevant signals of activity. On their own, they do not demonstrate that a company has achieved durable commercial demand, profitable operations, technical advantage, or attractive returns for shareholders.

- Technical evidence: The article describes architectures and planned projects but supplies no independent, comparable benchmark of performance or useful workload results.
- Execution evidence: Planned systems, acquisitions, and roadmaps still depend on delivery and integration. The article does not establish that every reported plan has been completed.
What an investor would still need to compare
The article does not offer a comparable analysis of valuation, cash runway, dilution exposure, cash burn, or revenue quality for the three companies. It therefore cannot support a conclusion that one is the best stock—or that any is likely to make investors millionaires. Before making an investment decision, compare current filings and disclosures for:
- Revenue already recognized versus guidance, bookings, or announced project value.
- Cash, operating cash flow, cash burn, debt, and the company’s funding needs.
- Share dilution, acquisition financing, and the effect of new equity issuance.
- Valuation relative to demonstrated commercial results, not just technical plans or market potential.
- Evidence that systems perform useful workloads and that customers pay to keep using them.
Those measures require current, company-specific information beyond what the October 3, 2026 article supplies. Treat its descriptions as a starting point for comparing strategies, not as a substitute for checking filings or assessing risk.
