If American Truck Simulator (ATS) does not show a manually downloaded mod, put the package in Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod (the folder is singular), turn off any Mod Manager filter that limits the list to Steam Workshop items, and verify that the downloaded package is a usable .scs file, supported archive, or unpacked mod directory. Then check the mod’s declared ATS version and Windows permissions. Workshop subscriptions follow a separate Steam-managed path and normally do not appear as ordinary files in your Documents folder.

Identify which kind of “missing” problem you have
“Not showing up” can describe several different states. The correct fix depends on whether ATS cannot discover the file at all, lists it but marks it unusable, or shows a Workshop item while a manual download seems absent.

Use the sequence below in order. It starts with the highest-impact, easiest checks and avoids changing several variables at once.
1. Put manual mods in the correct ATS folder
For a standard Windows installation, manually downloaded packages belong here:

Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod
The folder is named mod, not mods. It is under the user’s ATS documents directory, not inside the Steam installation directory. A January 24, 2024 reply by SCS Software forum global moderator Madkine states the distinction plainly: “The mod (not mods) folder is under my documents and not under steam.”
Find the user ATS documents directory
- Open File Explorer and open your Windows
Documentsfolder. - Open
American Truck Simulator. - Open
mod. If it does not exist, continue with the next section. - Copy the manual mod package into that folder. Do not place it in the Steam library’s ATS installation directory.
Windows installations can redirect Documents to another location, including a synchronized or organization-managed Documents folder. The important test is the path used by your ATS user data: the American Truck Simulator folder that the game creates and updates, with a child folder named exactly mod. If you have more than one Documents location, putting the file in a similarly named folder that ATS does not use will produce the same symptom as a missing mod.

On a new installation, the ATS documents directory may not exist until the game has been run once. Start ATS, reach the main menu, exit normally, and check Documents again. If the mod folder is still absent, create a folder named mod inside the ATS documents directory—not in the Steam installation directory. Avoid creating several competing American Truck Simulator folders in different locations; that makes it harder to determine which one the game is reading.
2. Make sure Mod Manager is allowed to show manual packages
ATS Mod Manager includes a control that can limit the list to Steam Workshop content. When that Workshop-only filter is enabled, a valid package in your Documents folder can appear to be missing even though ATS can read it.

- Launch ATS and open the profile’s Mod Manager.
- Look for the filter or view control that restricts the list to Steam Workshop mods.
- Disable that restriction so the manager can display both Workshop items and locally installed packages.
- Close and reopen the Mod Manager view if the list does not refresh immediately.
The exact on-screen wording can vary with the game build or language, so look for the meaning—“Workshop only” or an equivalent restriction—rather than one fixed label. This check applies to manual downloads; it does not move Workshop files into Documents.
3. Check the package format and what is actually inside the folder
ATS Mod Manager packages may be supplied as .scs files, supported zip archives, or normal directories. Steam guidance specifically says that an .scs file should be placed directly in the mod folder. Downloads delivered as .zip or .rar may need extraction so that the actual package—not merely an outer download archive—is visible to the game.
Use the right handling for each extension

After extraction, inspect the result before launching ATS. The item you expect Mod Manager to discover should be directly inside the mod folder. If extraction creates a wrapper folder, open it and locate the supplied package; do not blindly copy every level of the download into another nested directory. Keep unrelated readme files and screenshots outside the mod folder unless the author specifically identifies them as part of the package.
Rule out an incomplete or damaged download
A file can have the right extension and still be unusable if the download was interrupted or the archive cannot be opened. Re-download from the mod’s publisher when the archive reports an error, extract it again, and replace the old copy rather than keeping several similarly named versions. If the author lists required companion packages, note those requirements separately; a successfully discovered package can still fail in-game when a dependency is absent.

4. Check the mod’s declared ATS version
Discovery and compatibility are different tests. A package may appear in Mod Manager and still be unavailable because its metadata declares an ATS version that does not match the version your game accepts. The SCS Modding Wiki explains that when the game version does not match any version in the mod’s list, the user cannot use the mod and must wait for the author to update it.
Distinguish “not listed” from “listed but incompatible”
- Not listed at all: Continue checking location, filtering, package form, and permissions.
- Listed with a compatibility warning: The file has been discovered; moving it to another folder will not repair a declared version mismatch.
- Worked before an ATS update: Treat the update as a likely compatibility boundary and look for a release from the mod author that supports the current game version.
Do not edit version metadata simply to suppress a warning. A declaration is not proof that the mod’s content is compatible with a newer build, and changing it can turn a clear warning into less predictable behavior. Use the author’s current package or documentation when an update is required.
5. Verify Windows permissions and elevation
If the path, filter, and package all look correct but ATS still cannot read the files, check Windows access controls. An SCS support reply recommends examining NTFS permissions on the mod folder and whether the game is being run as administrator, because either condition can prevent files from being read as expected.
- Right-click the
modfolder, choose Properties, and open the Security tab. - Confirm that the Windows account used to run ATS has permission to list, read, and open the folder and its contents.
- Apply the same check to the package file itself if the folder is accessible but the file is not.
- Consider how ATS and Steam are being launched. An administrator/elevated launch versus a normal launch can change which user context and redirected folders are involved.
- After correcting an access issue, restart ATS and check Mod Manager again.
Do not grant broad permissions to every account as a first response. Correct the specific account or folder access that is preventing ATS from reading its own user-data directory, and keep a backup of any security setting you change.

6. Treat Steam Workshop subscriptions as a separate system
Workshop subscriptions are downloaded automatically and managed by Steam. They may not appear as ordinary files in Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod, so searching that folder for a subscribed item is not a reliable test of whether Steam delivered it.
When a Workshop mod is missing
- Confirm that the Steam account running ATS is subscribed to the item.
- Allow Steam to finish its download or update before judging the item absent.
- Use ATS Mod Manager with the Workshop filter enabled only when you intentionally want to view Workshop content; disable that filter when checking manual files.
- If the Workshop item was removed or its author withdrew it, the subscription may no longer provide a usable package. Check the item’s current Steam status and the author’s notes.
Do not copy random files from Steam’s Workshop storage into the Documents mod folder as a substitute for a subscription. Workshop delivery and manual installation are different workflows, and a copied cache may not be a complete or supported manual package.
7. Use a clean, one-change-at-a-time test
When several mods are installed, isolate the discovery problem before investigating load order or conflicts. This procedure avoids mistaking a gameplay failure for a Mod Manager visibility failure.
- Exit ATS.
- Temporarily move unrelated manual packages out of the
modfolder, leaving one known package for the test. - Confirm the remaining item is directly inside
Documents/American Truck Simulator/modand is an extracted, readable package. - Start ATS and open Mod Manager with any Workshop-only restriction disabled.
- Record whether the package is absent, listed, or listed with a version warning.
- Change one variable—such as extracting the archive, correcting the path, or restoring a permission—and test again.
- Once discovery works, restore other packages one at a time. If a newly restored package causes a failure, its own version, dependencies, or contents need attention.
This test does not prove that two mods are compatible with each other. It only separates “ATS cannot discover this package” from later problems such as dependencies or load-order conflicts.

9. Cases this checklist cannot resolve by itself
Some failures occur after discovery. A broken mod download, a removed Workshop item, missing dependencies, and load-order conflicts each require the specific mod’s documentation or ATS logs. The checklist can establish that ATS sees the package; it cannot certify that the package is internally correct or compatible with every other installed mod.

Linux and macOS installations can use different user-data locations and permissions than the Windows/Steam setup described here. Do not copy the Windows path blindly to another operating system. Find the ATS user-data directory created by that installation, then apply the same principles: use its singular mod folder for manual packages, keep Workshop handling separate, and verify package format and declared game version.
