AMD later officially identified them as the Ryzen Threadripper 9970X and 9980X. The 9970X has 32 cores and 64 threads; the 9980X has 64 cores and 128 threads. Both carry a 350 W TDP and list boost clocks up to 5.4 GHz.
Which Threadripper 9000 models have 32 and 64 cores?
AMD announced the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 family at COMPUTEX 2025 and associates it with the Shimada Peak codename. The earlier “spotted” framing is now historical: the two desktop models are officially named the Ryzen Threadripper 9970X (32 cores) and Ryzen Threadripper 9980X (64 cores). See AMD’s May 20, 2025 announcement and its Ryzen Threadripper 9980X product page.

What the differences mean
9970X: 32 cores and a higher base clock
The 9970X pairs 32 cores and 64 threads with a 4.0 GHz base clock and 160 MB of total cache. Its maximum boost is listed at up to 5.4 GHz, matching the 9980X’s announced maximum.

- Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series
9980X: twice the cores and cache
The 9980X has 64 cores, 128 threads, and 320 MB of total cache, with a 3.2 GHz base clock. It shares the 9970X’s 350 W TDP and up-to-5.4 GHz maximum boost. Core counts alone do not establish how much faster it will be in a particular workload; these specifications are not a benchmark comparison.
Price and platform checks
AMD announced U.S. suggested prices of $2,499 for the 9970X and $4,999 for the 9980X in 2025. Treat those figures as announcement-era guidance, not a quote for what a retailer charges today. Check current retailer listings for price and stock.
