How many cores and what clock speeds does it have?

The 9950X3D2 has 16 CPU cores and 32 threads, with simultaneous multithreading enabled. Its base clock is 4.3 GHz and its maximum boost clock is up to 5.6 GHz. AMD defines maximum boost as the peak frequency on a bursty workload; actual clock speed and how long it is sustained depend on the system’s cooling, thermals, workload, and application.

How much cache does the 9950X3D2 have?

AMD’s specification table lists 192 MB of L3 cache and 16 MB of L2 cache, plus 1,280 KB of L1 cache. The launch announcement’s 208 MB total-cache figure adds the L3 and L2 amounts; it does not mean the L3 cache alone is 208 MB. AMD describes the design as dual second-generation 3D V-Cache across all 16 cores.

What motherboard and memory does it need?

AM5 motherboard and chipset

The processor uses the AM5 socket. AMD lists A620, X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840, and B850 chipsets. A chipset appearing on that list does not confirm that every individual board supports the processor with its current firmware: check the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements for the exact model before buying or upgrading.

DDR5 memory and official speeds

The 9950X3D2 supports dual-channel DDR5 UDIMM memory and up to 256 GB. AMD’s listed maximum memory speeds vary by the number and rank of DIMMs:

Does the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 come with a cooler?

No. The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. AMD recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance, so budget for a compatible cooler and verify its fit with the case and AM5 socket. The CPU has a 200 W default TDP and a maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) of 95°C; TDP is not a direct measurement of the cooling system’s required capacity.

What does AMD claim about performance?

AMD reports average uplifts of 5% to 8% over the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in creator workloads and large source-code builds. AMD says the tests were conducted in February 2026. Its disclosed configurations included a 16-core system, 32 GB of DDR5-6000, Windows 11 Pro, an X870E motherboard, and a GeForce RTX 5090; workload notes identify AMD and BOXX performance labs. These are manufacturer-published results, not independent review findings, and they do not establish the same gain across every application or workload. System manufacturers may use different configurations.

AMD positions the chip for gaming, content creation, complex compile times, large-scale simulations, and memory-intensive work. Those are AMD’s stated intended workloads; the supplied performance figures specifically cover creator workloads and source-code builds, not every use case.
