AMD Radeon 890M vs. Nvidia GTX 1650: 10-Game Performance Compared

Radeon 890M can match or beat a GTX 1650 in selected games, but dedicated VRAM and sustained power make Nvidia’s GPU the safer native-1080p choice.

Short answer: Radeon 890M reaches GTX 1650-class performance in several games, but it is not a universal replacement. Fast LPDDR5X memory lets the integrated 890M compete at 720p and tuned 1080p settings, while the GTX 1650 remains the safer choice for sustained native 1080p, high textures and heavier workloads.

What is being compared?

The Radeon 890M is an integrated RDNA 3.5 graphics processor with 16 compute units. It has no dedicated VRAM; it reserves part of the system’s memory. The GeForce GTX 1650 is a discrete GPU with 4GB of dedicated VRAM. That difference affects texture capacity, minimum frame rates and how consistently each GPU can sustain performance.

The direct ten-game comparison measured complete systems rather than two graphics chips in identical hardware:

Radeon 890M platform GeForce GTX 1650 platform
ASUS Vivobook S16 M5606WA Desktop system with a Gainward GeForce GTX 1650 4GB
AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
32GB LPDDR5X-7500 shared memory 32GB DDR4-4000 system memory plus dedicated 4GB VRAM
AMD driver 24.7.1 NVIDIA driver 560.81
Thin-laptop cooling and firmware limits Desktop-class sustained power and cooling

Consequently, the results show what each entire platform delivered. The 890M benefits from unusually fast LPDDR5X and a newer processor; the GTX 1650 benefits from dedicated VRAM and a higher, steadier power budget. A different laptop, memory configuration, BIOS power limit, driver or game patch can change the gap.

Results from the primary ten-game test

The test recorded real gameplay at 1080p. Settings and the reported comparison are shown below. The source video did not publish a complete numerical FPS table, so entries without a stated number are deliberately left qualitative.

Game Settings used Reported result
Devil May Cry 5 1080p High Generally close; runs showed occasional swings of about 5–10 FPS in either direction.
God of War 1080p Original Very similar performance between the two systems.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice 1080p High The 890M held a noticeable lead, about 10 FPS in the cited run.
Cyberpunk 2077 1080p Low The 890M reached up to 45% higher performance in the cited comparison.
Resident Evil 6 1080p Max Included in the run; the source did not state a complete numeric result.
RoboCop: Rogue City 1080p, 85% resolution scale, Low The 890M stayed above 30 FPS, while the GTX 1650 fell as low as about 20 FPS in the cited sequence.
The First Descendant 1080p Medium Similar overall, with the 890M roughly 10% ahead in portions of the test.
Forza Horizon 5 1080p High, ray tracing off The 890M was ahead in the cited run.
Tomb Raider (2013) 1080p Max Included in the run; a full numerical comparison was not published.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider 1080p High The 890M was ahead in the cited run.

RoboCop’s 85% scale is below a native 1920×1080 render, so its result should not be read as a native-1080p victory. Likewise, Cyberpunk’s Low preset and the other games’ individual presets matter as much as the GPU name when interpreting the comparison.

What a second ten-game comparison found

A separate 2026 comparison used its own hardware, drivers and practical settings. It reported these representative averages, with Radeon 890M first and GTX 1650 second:

Why the results can reverse from game to game

Shared bandwidth versus dedicated VRAM

LPDDR5X-7500 gives the 890M a much faster memory path than ordinary laptop DDR4, helping an integrated GPU feed its shaders. However, the same memory is shared with the CPU and operating system. Large texture sets can therefore cause contention or force lower texture quality. The GTX 1650’s 4GB VRAM is slower than the 890M’s peak shared-memory bandwidth in some situations, but it is reserved for graphics and provides predictable texture storage.

Power and cooling

A Vivobook-class system must balance GPU heat, CPU boost and battery-oriented power limits in a thin chassis. Performance may drop during a long session as temperatures stabilize. A desktop GTX 1650 can hold its configured clocks for longer, and a gaming laptop with a higher GPU power limit can also outperform a thin 890M implementation. Short benchmark runs can therefore favor the 890M more than extended play.

Engine and workload behavior

Esports games and engines that scale well at Low settings can run very quickly on the 890M. Open-world games with heavy streaming, high-resolution textures or demanding effects expose the GTX 1650’s dedicated memory and sustained power advantage. Ray tracing is not part of the Forza result, and neither GPU should be selected primarily for modern ray-traced workloads.

What frame rate should you expect at 1080p?

There is no single 890M FPS figure. In the primary run, it was competitive at 1080p High in several titles and exceeded the GTX 1650 in selected scenes, but exact frame rates were not published for every game. The independent averages show a practical range from about 31 FPS in Starfield to 118 FPS in Fortnite on that test setup.

  • Competitive games: 100 FPS or more is plausible with suitable settings, as the independent results show for Fortnite and Counter-Strike 2.
  • Well-scaled mainstream games: 50–80 FPS is a reasonable target when settings and memory bandwidth cooperate.
  • Heavy AAA games: expect compromises. Around 30–60 FPS may require Low or Medium presets, resolution scaling, or an upscaler.

These ranges are indications from the cited comparisons, not a guarantee for every 890M laptop. Check the machine’s memory speed, cooling design and configured power mode before comparing reviews.

Which GPU is better for a gaming laptop?

Choose Radeon 890M when efficiency and portability matter

  • You want a thin, quiet laptop that can also serve as a general-purpose machine.
  • Your target is 720p or 900p, or 1080p with Low/Medium settings and resolution scaling.
  • You mainly play esports, older games and scalable engines.
  • You value an integrated design with no separate entry-level GPU.

Choose GTX 1650 when native 1080p consistency matters

  • You want native 1920×1080 more often, especially in newer AAA games.
  • You use high texture settings or games that stream large environments.
  • You prefer steadier long-session performance and dedicated 4GB VRAM.
  • You are comparing a well-cooled gaming laptop or desktop rather than a thin ultraportable.

How to get the best result from an 890M laptop

  1. Use the manufacturer’s performance or plugged-in mode; battery mode can impose a substantially lower power limit.
  2. Prefer the fastest supported dual-channel or soldered memory configuration. The tested system used 32GB LPDDR5X-7500, and slower memory can reduce an integrated GPU’s performance.
  3. Start at 1080p Low or Medium. If frame rates dip, reduce resolution to 1600×900 or 1280×720 before cutting every visual option.
  4. Reduce texture quality when a game approaches the shared-memory limit, then adjust shadows, volumetrics and screen-space effects.
  5. Use an in-game upscaler when available, and judge the result by sustained play rather than a short opening sequence.
  6. Keep the laptop’s vents clear and update graphics drivers through the laptop maker or AMD when a game-specific fix is needed.

Bottom line for buyers

The Radeon 890M has genuinely reached GTX 1650-class performance in parts of a ten-game 1080p comparison, helped by Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and LPDDR5X-7500. That makes it a strong integrated solution for portable gaming at sensible settings. The GTX 1650 remains the more predictable option for native 1080p and texture-heavy games because its 4GB VRAM and higher sustained power budget impose fewer shared-memory and thermal constraints. Treat the GPU labels as a starting point: the laptop’s memory, cooling, power mode and intended resolution determine which one feels faster in practice.
