The operating case is clearer: AMD sells processors, graphics products, accelerators and other silicon; Arm primarily licenses technology and earns royalties when customers ship chips that use it. AMD’s reported results show strong recent growth, while Arm’s licensing-and-royalty model has different economics. Arm has also announced a move into Arm-designed silicon, which could change its business mix. Which stock fits better depends on the business model and risks you want—and the price you pay.
What is the difference between AMD and Arm?
AMD and Arm both participate in semiconductor markets, but they do not make money in the same way. AMD designs and sells products, including processors, graphics products and data-center accelerators, across Data Center, Client and Gaming, and Embedded segments. It also invests in software and systems around its products. Its revenue therefore depends on product shipments, demand, and the mix and performance of products sold.

Arm’s established business is centered on licensing processor and other intellectual property to semiconductor companies, original equipment manufacturers, cloud providers and other customers. It generally earns licensing revenue when customers license its technology and royalties when those customers ship chips containing Arm products. Arm announced Arm-designed silicon products in 2026, expanding beyond its traditional licensing-led model. The announcement does not establish that the new silicon will have the same economics as IP licensing and royalties.

That distinction matters to an investor: AMD’s product sales and Arm’s IP-related revenue are exposed to different operating drivers. Arm’s announced silicon activity adds a further variable rather than making the two companies interchangeable.

What do the latest reported results show?
The figures below are company-reported results in U.S. dollars. AMD’s fiscal year follows the calendar year, while Arm’s fiscal year ends March 31, so the periods are not synchronized. The figures describe completed reporting periods, not forecasts.
| Company and reporting period | Reported revenue | Additional reported results |
|---|---|---|
| AMD, FY2025; Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., 2026 | $34.6 billion, up 34% year over year | Data Center revenue was $16.6 billion, up 32%; Client and Gaming revenue was $14.6 billion, up 51%. |
| AMD, Q2 FY2026 ended June 27; Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., 2026 | $11.5 billion, up 50% year over year | GAAP gross margin was 54%; GAAP net income was $2.3 billion; diluted GAAP EPS was $1.38. Data Center revenue was $6.7 billion, up 107% year over year. |
| Arm, FY2026 ended March 31; Arm Holdings plc, 2026 | $4.92 billion, compared with $4.007 billion in FY2025 | FY2026 royalty revenue was $2.61 billion and licensing revenue was $2.31 billion. Statutory profit before tax was $960 million, compared with $756 million in FY2025. |
AMD’s Q2 FY2026 data-center growth is notable, but its year-over-year comparison needs context. AMD’s filing says the prior-year comparison was affected by inventory and related charges associated with U.S. government export controls on MI308 GPUs. That means the sharp improvement in profit should not be read as a clean like-for-like trend without accounting for those charges. The reported GAAP figures above should also not be mixed with non-GAAP measures or analyst estimates.

Arm’s FY2026 totals distinguish two revenue streams: licensing and royalties. The figures do not establish how much future revenue will come from Arm-designed silicon, or whether that activity will carry margins similar to its IP business. Nor do Arm’s fiscal-year totals line up directly with AMD’s calendar-year totals.
Which company benefits more from AI?
Both companies have exposure to computing demand that can include AI workloads, but the available reported figures do not prove which stock will benefit more, or translate that demand into a forecast of investment returns. AMD’s reported Data Center segment growth is direct evidence of recent operating momentum in that segment; it is not a guarantee that growth will continue or that the share price will rise.

For AMD, the investment case depends on selling products into competitive markets and executing on product development, manufacturing arrangements and delivery. For Arm, the established route to benefit is customers adopting Arm technology and shipping chips that generate licensing and royalty revenue. The announced move into Arm-designed silicon could create another route, but its future contribution and economics are not established by the reported FY2026 revenue breakdown.
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su said in the company’s August 4, 2026 Q2 results release: “We delivered an excellent quarter, with record revenue and profitability as Data Center revenue more than doubled year-over-year.” That is management’s characterization of the quarter, not independent confirmation of future performance or a prediction of stock returns.

What could go wrong with each investment case?
AMD: product execution and external dependencies
AMD’s filings describe intense competition, rapid technology change, product obsolescence and the need to deliver products on time. The company also relies on third parties for manufacturing and components, and its results may be affected by regulatory changes, export controls and significant-customer risks. A product-led growth thesis therefore depends not only on market demand, but also on execution and the ability to supply products under changing competitive and regulatory conditions.

Arm: customer adoption and changing business mix
Arm’s established licensing and royalty economics depend on customer design choices and subsequent chip shipments. Investors should assess the competitive alternatives customers can choose and the customer-concentration risks described in Arm’s filings. Arm-designed silicon adds a distinct execution and business-mix question: the available reported figures do not establish its future sales, capital needs or margins.

How should you decide whether AMD or Arm is the better buy?
First separate the company you prefer from the stock price you are willing to pay. Strong operating performance does not by itself establish that a share is attractively valued. A fair stock comparison requires matched data, not AMD’s latest quarterly results set against a different-date valuation for Arm.
- Use a single valuation date. Compare AMD and Arm share prices from the same trading date and use diluted share counts appropriate to that date to calculate market capitalization.
- Compare earnings on a consistent basis. Review trailing and forward earnings using comparable accounting definitions. Keep GAAP EPS distinct from non-GAAP EPS, and label analyst consensus estimates separately from company guidance.
- Check the resulting valuation measures. Calculate comparable multiples from the same-date prices and clearly identified earnings figures. A multiple based on adjusted earnings should not be presented as directly comparable to one based on GAAP earnings without explaining the difference.
- Judge what must happen for your thesis to work. For AMD, consider product demand, product mix, delivery and competition. For Arm, consider customer adoption and shipments, royalty and licensing activity, and how the announced silicon expansion may alter the business.
- Revisit the comparison when new results arrive. Arm’s official results calendar scheduled its Q2 FY2027 webcast for November 4, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that release was still in the future; no Q2 FY2027 results are established here.
The company-reported results support an operating comparison, but they do not settle valuation. The available evidence does not establish matched October 7, 2026 share prices, forward earnings estimates or comparable valuation multiples. Without those inputs, a definitive price-based winner would be unsupported.
So, is AMD or Arm a better investment in 2026?
On business model alone, AMD may better fit an investor seeking exposure to a product-led semiconductor company whose reported results include substantial Data Center, Client and Gaming businesses. Arm may better fit an investor seeking exposure to a licensing-and-royalty-led IP business, while also weighing the uncertainty of its announced silicon expansion. Those are descriptions of different investment theses, not buy recommendations.

Neither thesis answers whether the stock is a good buy at its current price. Make that decision only after checking same-date prices, comparable earnings estimates and valuation measures, and weighing each company’s execution risks. Based on reported operating results alone, neither can be named the better-valued stock for 2026.
