AMD Ross is a downloadable, agentic software assistant for embedded development. Announced September 30, 2026, and described by AMD as available now, it connects natural-language requests with supported AMD tools, documentation, reusable engineering skills and working design examples. It is software—not a hardware product—and an FPGA board is not required to install or use it.
What AMD Ross is
Ross is designed to help developers move through hardware design and debug, software and algorithm work, edge-AI development, system design and deployment. AMD says it can search supported documentation, interact with supported tools, run commands, explain errors and guide multi-step workflows.

AMD describes Ross as an agentic experience rather than a generic coding chatbot. Its launch announcement says the assistant can help accelerate common development cycles and improve productivity, but AMD has not published an independent benchmark or a numerical performance result. A customer statement from Geetha Govindaraj of iWave Global reports more efficient troubleshooting during debugging and bring-up; that is a testimonial, not a controlled measurement.

MCP connections to AMD tools
Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers connect the agent to supported AMD tools and tool sessions. Through those connections, Ross can perform supported actions in an existing development environment instead of merely suggesting code in isolation.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
The AMD Knowledge Base
The knowledge base uses retrieval-augmented generation to search supported public AMD documentation. AMD describes both cloud and local deployment options for supported configurations.
Expert-authored skills
AMD packages repeatable engineering procedures as agent skills. These skills encode workflows that developers would otherwise have to reconstruct from documentation and personal notes.
Ready-to-run examples
Design examples show how the skills can be used in working projects, giving teams a starting point for adapting Ross to their own repositories and tool flows.

Which AMD tools Ross supports
AMD’s launch materials name a supported development flow that includes the following products. Support is workflow- and configuration-dependent; inclusion in this list does not mean every Ross feature works with every version or installation.
| Area | Named AMD tools |
|---|---|
| FPGA hardware design and debug | Vivado Design Suite, ChipScope and Power Design Manager |
| Software and hardware/software co-design | Vitis and Vitis HLS |
| AI development | Vitis AI, ROCm AI and Ryzen AI software |
At the time of AMD’s published support information, the product page listed Vivado support for all versions and Vitis HLS 2025.2 and later. Tool compatibility can change independently of normal Vivado and Vitis releases, so check the current AMD Ross product page and Ross downloads page before installing.
What you need before setup
- Applicable AMD tool downloads, installations and licenses for the workflows you intend to run.
- A compatible IDE or command-line client.
- Access to a language model you are permitted to use in the chosen deployment.
- MCP-compatible clients and supported AMD tool environments when a workflow uses MCP.
AMD says Ross itself requires no additional license beyond the applicable licenses for AMD tools. You supply the preferred language model; Ross is not a replacement for the model provider or for AMD tool licensing.

- Can deliver fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games, discrete graphics card required
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
IDE and CLI choices
AMD’s product page names VS Code, Cursor, Devin, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot CLI and Codex CLI as examples of clients. “Client-agnostic” does not mean universal compatibility: the client must work with the relevant MCP servers and the AMD tools in your setup.

Simplified VS Code path
AMD describes a streamlined setup using a Vivado MCP server together with the retrieval-enabled AMD knowledge base inside VS Code. Follow the current extension and server instructions rather than relying on an older walkthrough, because downloads and supported versions are updated over time.
Cloud knowledge base
A cloud deployment can provide the documented retrieval service where organizational policy allows the required network access and model use.

- Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
Local or air-gapped deployment
For an isolated environment, AMD says to deploy the knowledge database with an embedding model and an MCP server, then use an answer-generation model suited to the system’s hardware and network policy. This arrangement keeps the deployment aligned with the organization’s connectivity and data-handling rules, but requires the local infrastructure and model operations that the cloud path does not.
Command-line HLS workflows
AMD says HLS skills can work directly with source code and project files through command-line tools such as v++ and vitis-run, without an MCP server. That can be useful when the task is centered on repository files and build commands rather than an interactive tool session.
Downloads and version details observed in October 2026
The downloads listing observed on October 2, 2026 showed the Vivado AI VS Code extension and Vivado MCP servers at version 2026.9.1, each with a September 29, 2026 update date. Local knowledge-base packages listed September 18, 2026 dates and were also updated September 29. These are timestamped listing details, not permanent compatibility guarantees. Current files, release notes, skills and examples are linked from AMD’s downloads page and the Ross repository.

How to evaluate a Ross setup
Compare configurations on the factors that affect whether a workflow will actually run:
- Tool and version coverage: confirm that the AMD product and version used by the project is supported.
- Client and model compatibility: verify that the chosen IDE or CLI works with the MCP servers and that the model is approved for the deployment.
- Data location: decide whether cloud retrieval is acceptable or whether local and air-gapped components are required.
- Integration method: identify which steps use MCP and which can run directly through tools such as
v++andvitis-run. - Existing AMD licenses: budget for the required Vivado, Vitis or other tool licenses even though Ross adds no separate license.
AMD’s launch materials do not provide a neutral benchmark against competing assistants, so these are setup and governance trade-offs rather than measured productivity rankings.
Reliability, permissions and data handling
Ross outputs are nondeterministic: results can vary with the run, model and prompt wording. AMD says the assistant operates within configured user permissions and supported tool environments, but users remain responsible for checking generated recommendations and proposed actions before relying on or implementing them.

Is an FPGA development board required?
No. Ross can be installed as software for supported AMD development workflows without purchasing a board. A board or evaluation kit becomes relevant only if your project needs physical FPGA or adaptive-SoC bring-up and debugging. AMD’s materials do not identify a particular board as a Ross requirement or establish compatibility for a specific model, so select hardware only after confirming the target device and tool-version support.
Availability
AMD announced Ross on September 30, 2026 and says it is available now. AMD also says it plans to add embedded tools and workflow capabilities monthly. The Ross release cadence is independent of the usual Vivado and Vitis release schedule, making the current product and downloads pages the authoritative places to check support before deployment.
