1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYes, you can install an AMD graphics card and an Nvidia graphics card in the same PC, provided the motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, and operating system can accommodate both. But installing two cards does not make them behave like one faster GPU: a game or other application must explicitly support assigning work to multiple adapters.
So the answer to “Can you use an AMD and Nvidia GPU at the same time?” depends on what “at the same time” means: sharing a PC, driving displays, handling separate jobs, or jointly rendering one workload. Those are different setups with different requirements.

What do you mean by using the cards together?
| What you want to do | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Install both cards in one PC | Possible when the motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, and software support the specific cards. |
| Use different cards for different displays or jobs | Potentially possible, but display routing and workload assignment depend on the operating system and the application. |
| Have both cards render one game or compute task | Only if that particular application is designed to use multiple adapters. Merely installing the cards does not enable this. |
| Combine their dedicated video memory | Do not expect a seamless shared VRAM pool for ordinary gaming. Cross-adapter data sharing is an explicit software mechanism with restrictions and overhead. |
Will two different graphics cards improve gaming performance?
Not automatically. A game must deliberately enumerate the available adapters, assign work to them, and coordinate resources. Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 documentation describes multi-adapter systems and application-targeted use, not automatic workload sharing by Windows: Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 multi-adapter documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a game that does not document multi-GPU support, plan on it using a selected rendering GPU rather than assuming it will split the work across both cards. Support is title-specific; the API a game uses by itself does not establish that the game supports mixed-vendor multi-GPU rendering.

There is no general performance uplift or combined-memory figure to promise. Results depend on the exact game or application and its implementation. A second card may add power use, heat, and setup complexity without speeding up the workload you care about.
Can an application deliberately use both adapters?
Yes. Direct3D 12 allows applications to target adapters from different manufacturers, but the application—not the mere presence of the cards—has to coordinate the work. Microsoft’s heterogeneous multi-adapter sample demonstrates one GPU rendering a scene and another applying a blur before presentation. It is an example of software intentionally written for two adapters, not a switch that makes every game use both: Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 heterogeneous multi-adapter sample.

Direct3D 12 also provides shared heaps so an application can share certain data between adapters. The developer must handle resource restrictions and synchronization, and sharing can add CPU work or use system memory. This is not the same as turning two cards’ dedicated VRAM into one transparent pool: Microsoft’s shared-heaps documentation.

Does AMD CrossFire combine an AMD card with an Nvidia card?
No. AMD’s CrossFire and MGPU guidance concerns supported AMD Radeon configurations; it is not an AMD-Nvidia compatibility guarantee. AMD’s current MGPU guide says DirectX 12 and Vulkan multi-GPU operation is managed by the application, while its legacy AMD feature instructions describe AMD-specific card and platform conditions. See AMD’s MGPU configuration guide and AMD’s CrossFire configuration FAQ.
AMD’s MGPU article, last updated June 19, 2025, lists same-family Radeon discrete graphics, Windows 10 or later, displays connected to the primary GPU, and motherboard and PSU support among its requirements. It lists Radeon VII and RX 7000 series or higher as unsupported for AMD MGPU. These are rules for AMD’s feature, not requirements or compatibility assurances for an AMD-Nvidia pairing; check AMD’s current guidance for any AMD-only configuration.
What to check before installing a second card
- Motherboard: Confirm there is a usable second slot, that the cards physically fit in the slot layout, and that the board’s lane configuration supports your intended setup. Check the motherboard documentation for the exact model.
- Power supply: Verify that the PSU has the required connectors and capacity for both cards and the rest of the system. Use the card and PSU manufacturers’ specifications; there is no universal wattage requirement for every pair.
- Case clearance and cooling: Check card length, thickness, clearance around neighboring slots, and airflow. Two installed cards can restrict each other’s cooling, depending on the case and card design.
- Operating system, drivers, and application: Confirm the supported OS and driver setup for the exact hardware, then consult the application’s own documentation for multi-adapter support. Do not infer universal driver behavior from the fact that Windows can enumerate adapters.
- Displays and workload assignment: Decide which card should drive each display and which application should use each adapter. Routing behavior varies; AMD’s instruction to connect displays to the primary GPU applies to AMD MGPU guidance, not necessarily every mixed-adapter Windows setup.
When does a mixed-vendor setup make sense?
It can make sense when you have a specific application that documents support for both adapters, or when you need separate cards for distinct display or compute tasks and have confirmed how the software assigns them. If your goal is simply better game performance, choose the GPU the game supports and measure that setup against your needs rather than assuming a second card is an upgrade.
