AMD Adrenalin: What to Know About Five Radeon Controls

Five AMD Adrenalin settings worth checking, with guidance on when Anti-Lag, Chill, Image Sharpening, sync options, and GPU tuning make sense.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no five-setting Adrenalin preset that improves every Radeon system. Check these five controls, then change only the ones that suit your games, display, and priorities: responsiveness, power and heat, image appearance, sync behavior, or GPU tuning. AMD says available options vary by hardware and configuration, and its profiles recommend settings based on hardware and display capabilities.

Before changing settings: choose global or per-game

Adrenalin’s global Graphics settings apply to desktop games and applications when they launch. Game profiles inherit global values by default, but profile-specific changes override them. If a control matters only in one game, use that game’s profile rather than changing the global setting. Menu labels and available options can differ by system; AMD’s instructions use different Adrenalin versions and example GPUs, and warn that configuration affects what appears.

Make one change at a time and compare in the same game and conditions. Look at the outcome you actually care about—input response, frame-rate behavior, power and heat, image appearance, or noise—rather than assuming every enabled feature raises performance.

1. Radeon Anti-Lag: try it when responsiveness matters

Radeon Anti-Lag dynamically adjusts frame timing to reduce input-to-response lag. AMD says it works best in GPU-limited scenarios, so it is a setting to test in a supported game when responsiveness is a priority, not a guarantee of improvement in every title or setup. AMD’s documented interface has it disabled by default and allows it to be enabled globally or configured in a game profile.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

Enable it in the profile for a game where you want to assess it, then compare how input feels during similar play. AMD’s documentation describes the feature’s intent but does not establish a universal latency reduction or FPS gain.

2. Radeon Chill: use it when lower power or heat outweighs a fixed frame rate

Radeon Chill varies a game’s frame rate according to character and camera movement. AMD positions it as a way to conserve power and reduce heat, which can suit a game where you do not need a consistently high frame rate.

  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence

Chill and Anti-Lag are not simultaneous alternatives: AMD says enabling Chill disables Anti-Lag or Boost if either is active. Choose Chill when power and heat matter more than the responsiveness goal behind Anti-Lag, and decide whether its variable frame rate feels acceptable in your game.

3. Radeon Image Sharpening: tune to your visual preference

Radeon Image Sharpening enhances perceived visual detail and can be configured globally or for an individual game. The result is subjective: start with a restrained amount of sharpening and judge the image in the game you actually play rather than relying on a universal slider recommendation.

  • AMD RDNA 3 Architecture with AI & Ray Tracing Acceleration: Powered by 32 RDNA 3 Compute Units featuring 3rd Gen Ray Tracing Accelerators and 2nd Gen AI Accelerators, delivering lifelike lighting, shadows, and superior machine learning performance for enhanced gaming and content creation.
  • Powerful 1080p & 1440p Gaming Engine: Features a max boost clock of up to 2695 MHz, a game clock of 2280 MHz, and 2048 stream processors, ensuring outstanding frame rates in the latest titles.
  • 8GB High‑Speed GDDR6 Memory: Equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128‑bit interface running at 18 Gbps, delivering up to 288 GB/s bandwidth for high‑resolution textures and demanding game workloads.

AMD’s instructions say to enable Image Sharpening before launching the game or application for it to take effect. If you turn it on while the game is already open, relaunch the application before evaluating the result.

4. FreeSync or Enhanced Sync: choose based on your display and frame rate

Option When it fits What it does
FreeSync Your display supports FreeSync and you want display refresh to follow GPU frame rate. Matches display refresh rate to GPU frame rate to address stutter or tearing.
Enhanced Sync The game’s frame rate exceeds the display’s refresh rate and you want a low-latency, tear-free option. AMD describes it as an option for that above-refresh-rate situation; the cited overlay guide shows it disabled by default.

FreeSync depends on display support; it is not a setting that makes an incompatible display FreeSync-capable. Enhanced Sync addresses a different frame-rate situation, so choose according to your display and how the game runs rather than enabling both on the assumption that more sync is always better. Changing a software setting alone is not a reason to buy a monitor.

5. GPU tuning presets: change them only for a defined goal

Adrenalin provides preset and automatic or manual GPU tuning options intended to tailor performance, acoustics, and thermals. The controls available depend on the system, and global tuning affects the GPU broadly unless a game profile is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use tuning only when you have a specific goal—such as adjusting the balance between performance and noise—and understand the controls presented for your GPU. Do not treat overclocking as guaranteed free performance: AMD’s documentation does not provide one universally safe preset for every card, nor does it establish a guaranteed gain. Avoid applying a setting simply because it is available.

Why these are checks, not a universal preset

AMD’s descriptions explain what features are intended to do, not a guaranteed numerical result. The documentation does not establish universal FPS gains, latency reductions, or temperature drops for these changes. Graphics profiles can recommend settings based on the hardware and display; HYPR-RX availability is also hardware-dependent, so it should not be assumed to appear on every Radeon card.

Priorities can conflict: Anti-Lag targets responsiveness, Chill trades fixed frame-rate behavior for power and heat savings, sharpening changes image appearance, sync options depend on display and frame rate, and tuning involves performance, acoustics, and thermals. Keep the controls that help with your own priority and leave the rest unchanged.
