Amazon stopped using Blue Jay, its experimental multi-arm warehouse robot, in operations less than six months after announcing it. Amazon’s February 25, 2026 update does not give a specific reason. Reporting by Inc, citing Business Insider and people familiar with the decision, points to high costs, manufacturing complexity and implementation difficulties—but those explanations have not been confirmed by Amazon. The company says Blue Jay’s underlying technology is being carried into other robotics programs.
What happened to Amazon’s Blue Jay robot?
Amazon introduced Blue Jay in October 2025 as a production-test system at a South Carolina facility. On February 25, 2026, the company updated its announcement to say it was no longer using Blue Jay in operations. TechCrunch had reported the halt on February 18 and quoted Amazon spokesperson Terrence Clark describing Blue Jay as a prototype.
That wording means the operational project ended; it does not establish that every component, software method or research result was abandoned. Clark told TechCrunch that Amazon was “accelerating the use of the underlying technology developed for Blue Jay,” with nearly all of it being carried over to support employees elsewhere in the network.
Why did Amazon cancel Blue Jay?
Amazon has not publicly confirmed a precise cause in its status update. The most specific explanation in available reporting comes from Inc, which cited Business Insider and people familiar with the decision. That account attributed the shutdown to three issues:

Those are reported contributors, not an official Amazon finding or a complete, definitive explanation. No public source establishes a dollar cost, failure rate or measured productivity shortfall for Blue Jay.
What Blue Jay was designed to do
Blue Jay was intended to combine work normally performed at three separate robotic stations. Its multiple arms were designed to pick items, stow them, and consolidate them in one workspace while helping employees with reaching and lifting.

Amazon’s stated capability
During the South Carolina production test, Amazon said Blue Jay could pick, stow and consolidate approximately 75% of the different item types stored at its sites. This is an Amazon-reported pilot capability from 2025, not an independently verified benchmark and not evidence that the system was ready for network-wide deployment.
How quickly it was developed
Amazon said Blue Jay moved from concept to production in just over a year, compared with three or more years for earlier systems including Robin, Cardinal and Sparrow. The company credited artificial intelligence, digital twins and experience from its existing robot fleet. That is Amazon’s explanation of its development process, not independent evidence that AI alone produced the shorter timeline.

What Amazon says remains useful
Amazon’s public position is that ending Blue Jay’s operational use does not end the technology effort. Clark said the underlying technology would continue to support employees across Amazon’s network. The company’s stated robotics objective is broader than any single machine: Amazon Robotics chief technologist Tye Brady said the goal is to make technology “the most practical, the most powerful tool it can be—so that work becomes safer, smarter, and more rewarding.” That is an objective, not a measured Blue Jay outcome.
Clark separately said Amazon is “always experimenting with new ways to improve the customer experience and make work safer, more efficient, and more engaging for our employees.” Amazon has not published a quantified Blue Jay safety improvement, efficiency gain or worker-impact result.

Blue Jay versus Amazon’s established robotics program
Blue Jay’s cancellation is best understood as one experimental project ending inside a much larger automation program. The comparison below separates what is documented from what remains unknown.

Does Blue Jay’s failure mean Amazon’s warehouse-robot strategy failed?
No. It means one ambitious system did not remain in operational use. Amazon was still expanding its wider robotics program when it announced the one-million-robot milestone in July 2025, and it said DeepFleet could improve fleet speed by 10%. Those company claims do not prove that every project succeeds, nor do they establish a particular labor or safety effect.

The more useful lesson is about deployment risk. Combining three stations into one machine can reduce duplicated equipment and floor space in theory, but it can also make manufacturing, maintenance, software integration and installation more complicated. In Blue Jay’s case, reported cost and implementation problems may have outweighed the benefits, although Amazon has not confirmed that account.

Calling that a spectacular failure overstates what is known: the system itself was discontinued, but Amazon says much of its technology is moving into other projects. The cancellation is a setback for this particular design—not evidence that Amazon has abandoned warehouse robotics.
