What Sam Altman actually said
Tech YouTuber Concept Central criticized OpenAI’s names on X, arguing that the company badly needed a naming-scheme revamp. Futurism reported that Altman replied, “lol yes we do.” IT之家’s July 22, 2024 account describes the same exchange and renders the reply as “Haha, yes, we really do.”

The available reporting supports one narrow conclusion: OpenAI’s CEO acknowledged the criticism. It does not show that OpenAI had approved new names, set a launch date for a rebrand, or promised to replace GPT-4o mini.
Why “GPT-4o mini” became part of the complaint
OpenAI announced GPT-4o mini on July 18, 2024, calling it its “most cost-efficient small model.” The label combines a product family, a generation number, a letter, and a size descriptor. That can make it difficult for a new user to infer what the model is best at or how it relates to similarly named systems.
#1 Best Overall
Two useful tests for any model-label system are:
- Capability signal: Can a reader infer the model’s relative capability or intended use from the name?
- Distinctness: Are related names easy to tell apart when read quickly or spoken, especially names such as GPT-4o and o4?
These are practical editorial criteria, not measured findings. The available reports contain no survey or statistic quantifying how many users misunderstand OpenAI’s names.
What GPT-4o mini was at launch
OpenAI positioned the model as a smaller, lower-cost option for API workloads such as chained or parallel calls, large-context processing, and fast customer-support responses. The launch announcement also said text and vision were supported. ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Team access was announced for July 18, 2024, with Enterprise access planned for the following week; those were launch statements, not guarantees of present availability.
Rank #2
| Launch detail | Value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MMLU score | 82% | OpenAI’s 2024 launch-announcement figure; MMLU was described as a textual-intelligence and reasoning benchmark. |
| API input price | $0.15 per 1 million tokens | OpenAI’s July 2024 launch price; not necessarily the current price. |
| API output price | $0.60 per 1 million tokens | OpenAI’s July 2024 launch price; not necessarily the current price. |
| Context window | 128K tokens | Launch-announcement specification. |
| Maximum output | 16K tokens per request | Launch-announcement specification. |
| Cost comparison | 99% lower cost per token than text-davinci-003 | OpenAI’s own comparison in 2024, not an independent measurement. |
Those performance and pricing figures explain the product’s positioning, but they do not prove that users found the name confusing.
Did OpenAI later change the naming system?
Altman’s one-line reply is not evidence of a completed overhaul. No replacement naming scheme, implementation date, or expanded plan was included in the contemporaneous reports. The safest reading is that he agreed the labels could be improved while leaving the practical details unresolved.
How current availability should be read
OpenAI’s release notes say GPT-4o was retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, while also specifying that there were no API changes at that time. That distinction matters: a model’s removal from the ChatGPT product does not automatically establish the status of every API deployment.
OpenAI’s current GPT-4o mini API documentation lists the model, its modalities and features, token pricing, and the snapshot gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18. API terms and availability can change, so developers should consult that documentation immediately before deploying or budgeting around the model.
Bottom line
“lol yes we do” was an acknowledgment of criticism, not a naming roadmap. GPT-4o mini’s launch-era specifications and price made it a significant small model, but nothing in the reported exchange says OpenAI had decided what a clearer naming system would be or when it would arrive.
