Amazon has launched a three-model Alexa Tablet family that runs Android with Google Play access, and the US entry price has moved well above the budget positioning Fire tablets were known for. The 8 starts at $229.99, the 11 at $329.99, and the 12 Pro at $499.99. Amazon’s launch post does not say outright that every Fire tablet is discontinued. WIRED reports that Amazon expects to stop shipping Fire tablets within a month or two, and an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that Fire devices will keep working with ongoing support.
What Amazon launched
The new range is the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Amazon Alexa Tablet 11, and Amazon Alexa Tablet 8. Each has Alexa+ built in and access to the Google Play Store. Amazon describes them as an all-new line. According to TechCrunch’s launch coverage, an Amazon spokesperson stressed that these are new hardware and a new operating system, not a Fire tablet rebrand. Amazon’s own announcement is the primary source for the lineup, specifications, pricing, and availability: Amazon’s announcement on aboutamazon.com.

Models and specifications
The table below uses Amazon’s published specifications. Battery and performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. Where the launch material gives an upper limit (such as “up to 16GB RAM”), the table shows that limit and separately lists the base configuration Amazon shows in its pricing table.

Amazon says the tablets and Kids Tablets are available to order on October 8, 2026. Shipments begin October 14, 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and October 19, 2026 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Amazon says the Kids Tablets also ship in Japan from October 14. Amazon names Best Buy and Target among select retail partners. Launch-day availability can differ by retailer and region, so check the listing before ordering.
The higher entry price is a clear step up from the budget positioning associated with Fire tablets. A precise percentage increase against a specific older Fire model would require a dated, like-for-like price comparison, which is not part of Amazon’s launch material.

What happens to Fire tablets
Amazon’s launch post presents the Alexa Tablets as a new line and does not explicitly announce the end of the Fire tablet range. Two reports fill in the rest, and they describe different things:
- Shipping: WIRED reports that Amazon expects to stop shipping Fire tablets in the next month or two, and that it will support them for four years from the last ship date. Read this as WIRED’s reporting, not as an announced final shipping date. WIRED’s coverage of the Alexa Tablets has the details.
- Support: In a statement quoted by GeekWire, an Amazon spokesperson said: “The Alexa Tablets are a new product line built for what’s next — they don’t change anything about the experience Fire tablet owners have today.” GeekWire also reports that Amazon will provide at least four years of support after the last Fire tablet it sells. GeekWire’s report contains the quote and retailer details.
The two statements use different reference points for the support period: the last Fire tablet Amazon sells in one case, and the last ship date in the other. Until Amazon publishes a dated end-of-sale notice, owners should treat the exact cut-off as unconfirmed.

Android and Google Play: what changes
The biggest software change is the move from Fire OS to Android with Google Play access. TechCrunch says the store gives access to apps such as YouTube, Netflix, and Gmail. Access to an app does not show how well it is designed for a large screen. Ars Technica notes that Android tablet app optimization remains a limitation when comparing these devices with an iPad, and that shortcoming matters most for productivity apps on the 12 Pro.

Alexa+ is built into all three models and works through voice and touch. Amazon also describes On-Screen Intelligence, which can use what is displayed on screen to offer contextual help. According to Amazon, both features are off by default, require you to opt in, show a visible active indicator when running, and can be turned off. These are Amazon’s stated controls; this article has not tested them on the hardware.

Kindle reading mode and battery claims
Amazon describes a Kindle reading mode that silences notifications and reduces blue light. Its announcement gives up to 20 hours of reading on the 12 Pro. Reading battery life depends on the model, and WIRED reports model-specific figures, so check the model-specific material before comparing reading time across the range. Reading-mode hours and the video playback figures in the table above measure different things and should not be compared directly.
Which model fits which buyer
- Budget-first shoppers: The 8 is the lowest-priced option at $229.99, with the smallest screen and the lightest claimed weight among the three, at 329g.
- Streaming and reading on a mid-size screen: The 11 at $329.99 offers 8GB RAM and a 2.5K display, with dual speakers.
- Multitasking and work: The 12 Pro at $499.99 offers the largest display, the highest claimed refresh rate, the most RAM, and quad speakers. It is also the only model that can take the optional keyboard and pen in a setup that approaches $740.
- Current Fire owners: A working Fire tablet keeps working, and the support timeline above applies. Buying an Alexa Tablet is a choice about software and price, not a requirement to keep your existing device running.
Before buying, compare configured price, screen size, intended use, memory and storage, Google Play app needs, and whether you would use the keyboard or pen at all.
