Deal status (August 18, 2026): The headline refers to Amazon prices reported on March 4–12, 2026, not a confirmed live offer today. The largest reported reductions were $300 on selected M4 MacBook Air configurations after Apple introduced the M5. Check the individual Amazon listing before buying; price, stock, seller and condition may have changed.
Which M4 MacBook Air models were reported at $300 off?
AppleInsider’s March 5, 2026 report listed the following Amazon prices. They are historical deal prices, not verified August 18 prices.
| Model | Configuration | Reported price | Reported reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch M4 | 16GB memory, 512GB SSD | $999 | $200 |
| 13-inch M4 | 24GB memory, 512GB SSD | $1,099 | $300 |
| 15-inch M4 | 16GB memory, 256GB SSD | $999 | $200 |
| 15-inch M4 | 16GB memory, 512GB SSD | $1,099 | $300 |
| 15-inch M4 | 24GB memory, 512GB SSD, Starlight | $1,299 | $300 |
See the original configuration list at AppleInsider. Amazon pricing moved quickly: Macworld later reported a 15-inch, 16GB/512GB model at $1,079 on March 12 (Macworld).
What “$300 off” actually measured
The discount was calculated against the M4’s original U.S. list prices: $999 for the 13-inch model and $1,199 for the 15-inch model, announced in March 2025 (Apple). It does not automatically mean the laptop was $300 cheaper than an equivalent M5, nor that every M4 configuration received the same reduction.

The comparison changed when Apple announced M5 Air models on March 3, 2026. M5 starts at $1,099 for 13 inches and $1,299 for 15 inches, with 512GB storage as standard (Apple’s announcement). The M4 base configuration launched with 256GB, so a low headline price may represent less storage than the newer entry model.
Why Amazon discounted the M4
The timing strongly suggests Amazon was discounting remaining M4 stock after the M5 launch. That is an inference from the launch dates and sale coverage, not a confirmed Amazon statement about inventory quantities. Reports from 9to5Toys, Macworld and 9to5Toys’ later coverage document the March clearance period.

M4 versus M5: what changes?
What remains good about the M4
- Apple silicon performance for web, office, school, coding and light creative work.
- 16GB unified memory in standard configurations, with some discounted models offering 24GB.
- 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch Liquid Retina displays, MagSafe charging and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.
- Support for up to two external displays and Apple Intelligence compatibility on Apple silicon Macs.
What M5 adds
- Newer CPU/GPU architecture with Neural Accelerators and hardware ray tracing.
- Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 153GB/s memory bandwidth, according to Apple’s specifications (Apple specifications).
- 512GB starting storage.
Apple claims up to 1.5× faster 3D rendering and up to 4× faster AI-task performance versus M4 in specified comparisons. Those are Apple’s claims, not independent test results (Apple).
Which configuration offered the best value?
Best large-screen value: 15-inch, 16GB/512GB
At the reported $1,099 price, this model combined a 15.3-inch workspace with enough storage for most office, study and photo-management workloads. It was listed as $300 below the M4 15-inch model’s original $1,399 configuration price.

Best portable multitasking value: 13-inch, 24GB/512GB
The reported $1,099 13-inch model traded screen size for 24GB of memory. Developers, heavy browser multitaskers and long-term owners may benefit more from that extra memory than from moving to a base M5 with less RAM.
Cheapest entry point: 256GB M4
Historical sales have taken the 13-inch 16GB/256GB model as low as $799, including an August 2025 promotion; that figure does not establish an August 2026 price (MacRumors). Treat 256GB cautiously if you keep games, video, large photo libraries, virtual machines or local AI models.

Should you buy the M4 or pay for M5?
| Choose the M4 when… | Choose the M5 when… |
|---|---|
| The verified saving is at least $200–$300. | The price gap is small. |
| Your work is mainly web, Office, school software, coding, streaming or light creative apps. | You want 512GB without upgrading storage. |
| You can get 24GB memory for less than a comparable M5. | You will keep the Mac for many years and want the newest platform. |
| Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and newer graphics features are unimportant. | Your workload benefits from newer AI, 3D or graphics hardware. |
Neither generation is automatically the better deal: compare the same screen size, memory and storage, not just the advertised discount.

- Confirm the selected variation says M4, then verify 13-inch or 15-inch size.
- Check memory (16GB or 24GB), storage (256GB or 512GB) and any listed GPU option.
- Confirm the color and that the price remains unchanged at checkout.
- Read whether it is “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com,” an authorized reseller, or another marketplace seller.
- Make sure the condition is new, not renewed, used or open-box, and review the return window.
- Check whether a coupon, Prime membership or checkout promotion is required.
- Save a screenshot of the selected configuration, seller and price.
- After delivery, inspect the serial number and condition, verify Apple warranty coverage, and start a return promptly if the model is wrong.
A listing appearing on Amazon is not proof that Amazon itself is the seller. Marketplace offers can also be mislabeled, opened or configured differently from the title.

Bottom line for August 18, 2026
The M4 MacBook Air clearance was real historical deal coverage, with selected 13-inch and 15-inch models reaching $300 below their original M4 prices. Buy one now only if the exact Amazon listing still shows a meaningful discount, the storage and memory fit your workload, and the seller and condition check out. Choose the M5 when the gap has narrowed or when 512GB storage and newer wireless and graphics capabilities matter more than the savings.
