Amazon SDE Interview Prep: What to Study and How the Process Differs by Level

Review Amazon’s coding topics, practice writing and testing code outside an IDE, and confirm your assessment format from your invitation. Student and SDE II guidance describe different processes.

Prepare for an Amazon SDE coding interview by reviewing computer science fundamentals, practicing data structures and algorithms, and writing code without relying on an IDE. Then tailor your preparation to the role and the assessment details in your invitation: Amazon’s student and recent-graduate guidance differs from its SDE II format.

Start with the role and your invitation

Amazon’s assessment format is not one-size-fits-all. Its university and recent-graduate page says the online assessment may have one or two parts depending on country. Its SDE II page describes a separate format. Use the guidance that matches your role, and confirm current timing and structure with your recruiter or recruiting point of contact.

Preparation context Assessment details on Amazon’s undated guidance page Interview-loop details
University and recent-graduate SDE Average 70-minute coding assessment; candidates are advised to set aside up to two uninterrupted hours for the online assessment. The page says the assessment can have one or two parts depending on country. The page does not state a universal interview-loop format.
SDE II 90-minute online assessment: two technical questions, 20 minutes of system design scenarios, and an eight-minute work style survey. Four 55-minute interviews; the page says to expect at least one system design question in the loop.

These figures describe the specific role guidance on Amazon’s undated pages, not a guarantee for every candidate. Follow the timing and format in your invitation if it differs.

What to study for the coding portion

Amazon’s software development interview topics guidance recommends reviewing computer science fundamentals and practicing coding outside an integrated development environment. It lists these areas:

  • Programming languages
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Coding and object-oriented design
  • Databases and distributed computing
  • Operating systems and internet topics
  • General machine learning and artificial intelligence

Use the list to identify gaps rather than trying to study every subject at equal depth. For a coding assessment, prioritize implementing solutions with relevant data structures and algorithms, explaining why they fit, and checking how the approach behaves as input size changes.

Amazon advises candidates to use its software development interview topics and sample coding challenge to become familiar with the online assessment environment. The page also recommends contacting your recruiting point of contact about likely interview topics.

Practice writing and validating complete code

Amazon’s SDE II guidance says: “Expect to be asked to write syntactically correct code—no pseudo code.” Practice turning a stated problem into executable code, not just describing an approach. Amazon also says SDE II coding is assessed for scalability, robustness, and testing, including edge cases and invalid input.

  1. Clarify the task. Ask questions about input constraints, expected output, and behavior for unusual or invalid inputs before committing to an approach.
  2. Explain your approach. State the data structure or algorithm you intend to use and why it fits the constraints.
  3. Write code without IDE dependence. Practice in a plain editor or on paper if appropriate, and be prepared to catch syntax and logic errors without relying on automated completion.
  4. Test deliberately. Walk through a normal case, a boundary case, an empty or minimal input where relevant, and invalid input if the problem defines such behavior.
  5. Discuss trade-offs. Explain runtime and memory implications, and identify what would need to change if the input or reliability requirements changed.

This routine is a practical way to apply Amazon’s stated expectations; Amazon does not prescribe a specific candidate study schedule.

For SDE II, include system design preparation

The SDE II guidance includes system design scenarios in the online assessment and says to expect at least one system design question in the interview loop. Amazon names practicality, accuracy, efficiency, reliability, optimization, and scalability as design objectives.

Practice clarifying requirements before proposing components. Then explain how the design meets the stated needs, where it may fail or become inefficient, and what trade-offs you are making. Amazon specifically recommends asking questions to clarify and validate system designs.

Prepare behavioral examples from real work

Amazon recommends recalling specific work examples and considering how its Leadership Principles applied. Build a small set of examples from your own experience, and structure each with STAR: Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

  • Make your own actions and reasoning clear, rather than describing only what a team did.
  • Include metrics or other concrete data when it is relevant and available.
  • Choose examples that show how you handled a challenge, made a decision, or delivered an outcome.
  • Adapt the example to the question instead of memorizing a script.

Use a focused preparation sequence

  1. Read the role-specific Amazon guidance and your invitation; ask your recruiter about any unclear assessment details.
  2. Review the listed fundamentals and identify the areas where you cannot yet explain or implement a solution confidently.
  3. Practice coding problems without relying on an IDE, including verbal explanation, testing, and complexity discussion.
  4. Complete Amazon’s sample coding challenge to get familiar with the assessment environment.
  5. If the role is SDE II, practice system design using the stated quality objectives.
  6. Prepare concise STAR examples grounded in actual experience and relevant outcomes.

Amazon’s pages are undated, so use them as role-specific preparation guidance rather than as a substitute for the current instructions in your invitation.
