The company says glow may appear in dark mode at maximum brightness in a dark room, calls it expected with the colored bezel, and recommends lowering brightness. A report also relays earlier exchange advice for severe cases; that is not the same as a confirmed, general replacement policy.
What Amazon says about the Kindle’s edge glow
In an October 9, 2026 update, Android Authority quoted an Amazon spokesperson saying customers may see a glow around the edges of the book when the device is in dark mode, brightness is at maximum, and the room is dark. Amazon characterized the glow under those conditions as expected in order to achieve a color bezel and suggested lowering brightness to mitigate it. Read the updated report.

The same report relays earlier claims that Amazon acknowledged a problem in some batches and advised customers with severe light bleed to exchange their device. Those accounts do not establish a formal replacement policy, universal offer, eligibility rules, or a remedy available in every market. How to try reducing the glow
Amazon recommends lowering brightness when dark mode is on. Its help page explains that the screen light can be adjusted from Quick Actions or Settings, using the brightness scale or buttons. Compatible Kindles also have a Dark Mode control in the screen-light settings. See Amazon’s screen-light instructions.

- Open Quick Actions or Settings on the Kindle.
- Open the screen-light controls and reduce brightness from its current level.
- If desired, switch Dark Mode off in the same controls and check whether the edge effect changes.
These are troubleshooting steps, not a diagnosis. A lower brightness may reduce the glow in the conditions Amazon describes, but it cannot be assumed to fix a hardware fault.
Which 2026 Kindle is the base model?
Amazon’s 2026 lineup distinguishes the standard 16 GB Kindle from a separately identified 32 GB aluminum model. The standard Kindle is listed as a 6-inch, 300 ppi glare-free E Ink reader with up to six weeks of battery life. Amazon’s US launch announcement gave starting prices of $149.99 for the standard model and $189.99 for the aluminum version; prices can change and differ by market. The cited Amazon launch announcement supplies these starting prices for the US launch; it does not establish current pricing or prices in other markets. The available sources do not show that the aluminum model or any particular color is immune to edge glow, so the model comparison should not be treated as a way to avoid the issue.
What the redesigned display does—and does not—tell us
Amazon says the new Kindle family uses a redesigned reverse-stack display construction and a flush-front screen. Its announcement says the base model required rethinking how the display, front light, and touch layers are assembled and bonded. That design context does not prove that the architecture caused the reported glow, nor does it establish how often the effect occurs. Amazon’s design announcement.
