If you received an email about the Amazon returns settlement, verify it by independently visiting ReturnSettlement.com, the court-authorized settlement website. The case concerns alleged problems with Amazon physical-product returns and refunds—not the separate Amazon Prime subscription case. The settlement is proposed, not final; no member payment will be made unless it receives final approval and becomes effective.
How to check whether an Amazon returns settlement notice is legitimate
The settlement website says it is authorized by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Rather than relying on an email’s sender name or clicking its links, type ReturnSettlement.com into your browser and review the notice and FAQs there. The official notice lists the settlement administrator at [email protected] and 1-888-553-4246 for questions. A message’s appearance or subject line alone does not establish that the particular email is genuine.

The filed notice plan provides for email notices to the last-known email address in the class data. If delivery fails, the administrator will try an alternate email associated with the Amazon account when one is available; the plan also calls for at least three reminder emails. Not receiving an email does not, by itself, establish whether you qualify. You can check return and refund status in “Your Transactions” on Amazon.com and ask the administrator about possible class membership.

What the settlement is about—and what it is not
The case is In re: Amazon Return Policy Litigation, No. 2:23-cv-01372-JNW, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Plaintiffs alleged that Amazon mishandled certain returns and refunds. Amazon denies wrongdoing, and the court has not found Amazon liable. The proposed settlement still requires court approval and must become final before payments are issued. It is separate from the FTC-related Amazon Prime subscription refund settlement.

The settlement agreement provides for a $309.5 million payment into a non-reversionary common fund. The fund also pays administration expenses, attorneys’ fees and costs, and service awards, subject to court approval. The figure is not a promise of a $309.5 million payout to customers, nor does it establish an individual award.
Who may qualify
The court-authorized notice describes a settlement class covering people who initiated a return or requested a refund for a physical product purchased and, according to Amazon’s records, received in the United States through Amazon.com from September 5, 2017 through February 12, 2026, if one of these conditions applied:

- The refund was untimely or incorrect.
- Amazon later incorrectly charged the customer again for the returned product.
The notice lists exclusions, including purchases from Amazon affiliates and subsidiaries, with an exception for purchases made on Amazon.com and returns handled through Amazon fulfillment channels. The full notice controls; use the official website or administrator to check a particular purchase or uncertain class status.

Eligible class members may fall into Subclass A, Subclass B, or both, depending on their transactions. The notice sets different payment procedures:

If you have transactions in both subclasses, the notice says the amounts may be paid together. Do not assume which subclass applies from an email alone; check the official notice and transaction information. The agreement allocates 92.7% of the net settlement fund to Subclass A and 7.3% to eligible Subclass B claimants. Those are fund allocations, not individual payout percentages or guarantees.
Claim deadline, mailing address, and hearing date
The official site lists December 1, 2026 as the deadline to submit a Subclass B claim, opt out, or object. For a mailed Subclass B claim, the notice says it must be postmarked by that date. The listed mailing address is:

What the settlement figures do—and do not—say about payment
The settlement agreement gives context for the fund and the transaction categories, but none of these figures determines a particular person’s award:

Payment timing and amount depend on the settlement terms, eligibility, claims where required, court approval, and the settlement becoming final. Appeals may affect timing. The official materials do not establish a guaranteed individual amount or payment date.
Your choices: stay in, opt out, object, or do nothing
The notice states: “Your legal rights are affected whether or not you act. Please read this Notice carefully.” The principal options differ in effort, payment eligibility, and the effect on legal rights:

What Amazon says it will change
The notice describes operational commitments involving return and refund processing. They include monitoring processing timelines; troubleshooting technical issues that block refunds or cause erroneous recharges; automatically retrying approved refunds that remain incomplete after 30 days because of payment-processing issues, with manual reprocessing when needed; and messaging customers when Amazon approves or denies refunds. It also describes reasonable steps for certain returns whose grading has not completed after 90 days. The commitments have varying durations—generally 12, 18, or 24 months after the settlement’s effective date—and are subject to operational, fraud, and legal exceptions stated in the notice.
