There is no supported basis here for declaring Amazon’s recommendations better, more personalized, or more privacy-invasive than those from other online retailers. Amazon publicly describes several shopping signals and an About You feature for reviewing and editing some preference details. A fair comparison with another retailer requires comparable disclosures, controls, and outcome measurements—evidence that is not established for other retailers in this comparison.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Amazon has made specific public statements about shopping personalization. Its About You announcement identifies purchase history, conversations with Alexa for Shopping, product reviews, Lists, and searches as inputs to the shopping experience. Amazon also says shopping activity informs personalized recommendations on its homepage and throughout the shopping journey, as well as personalized deals and emails.

Those statements describe Amazon’s own account of its practices. They are not an independent audit or a complete inventory of every data point, model, or rule that could affect a particular recommendation. The feature and controls may also differ by marketplace, app version, account state, and shopping surface.

The available evidence does not provide a similarly detailed, directly comparable account of standard product-recommendation feeds and customer controls at other named retailers. That gap does not show that other retailers do—or do not—use any particular signal. It means the available material cannot support a retailer ranking for personalization depth, recommendation accuracy, or privacy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep those limits in mind when reading labels such as “recommended for you.” A label tells you how a retailer presents a row, not necessarily which customer signals drove it, how heavily they were weighted, or whether the item will suit your needs. Likewise, seeing a familiar product after searching for it may be consistent with personalization, but observation alone cannot establish the mechanism behind the result.
How does Amazon decide what to recommend?
Amazon’s public descriptions point to several kinds of shopping activity rather than one single signal. A purchase can indicate what a customer has bought; a search can indicate what they are considering; a review or List can express an evaluation or saved interest; and an Alexa for Shopping conversation can provide another shopping-related context. Amazon says this activity informs recommendations across the homepage and shopping journey.
That does not mean every signal affects every recommendation, or that each signal is weighted equally. Amazon’s public description does not, by itself, disclose the exact model or decision rule behind a specific product row. Nor does a recommendation’s position prove that it is the best product for a customer’s needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAmazon’s company description also characterizes its recommendations as personalized based on shopping activity and refers to product descriptions made more relevant to customers. These are Amazon’s descriptions of the experience, not independent findings about how often personalization changes an outcome or improves a purchase decision. The wording should not be taken as a guarantee that every displayed item or description is individualized in the same way.
Different recommendation formats answer different questions
When comparing shopping experiences, first identify what kind of suggestion you are looking at. An account-personalized row, a suggestion related to the product currently open, a popularity-based list, and a conversational shopping response are different formats. They may be intended to help with different decisions, so treating them all as equivalent “recommendations” can make a comparison misleading.
- Account-personalized suggestions: potentially reflect activity associated with a customer or account. Amazon says shopping activity informs recommendations, but a particular row may not reveal which activity influenced it.
- Current-item suggestions: appear in the context of an item being viewed. The context alone does not establish whether the row also uses account activity.
- Popularity or bestseller lists: can surface broadly popular items rather than products selected specifically for one person. A list should not be called personalized unless the retailer identifies it that way or other evidence supports that description.
- Conversational shopping responses: are generated in response to a shopping request. They should be evaluated separately from a standard homepage feed because the request and interaction are part of the context.
These categories are a comparison framework, not a claim that every retailer offers every format or labels it consistently. Even within one retailer, a homepage row, a product-page module, an email, and a response to a shopping question can have different contexts. Record where a suggestion appeared before comparing it with another one.

What is Amazon’s About You feature?
Amazon describes About You as a place where customers can review and edit preference details used to personalize shopping recommendations. That gives shoppers a way to inspect or adjust some personalization information, where the feature is available. Amazon does not describe About You as a complete view of all account data or every input that could affect recommendations.
Availability and presentation can vary by marketplace, app version, and product surface. If you do not see About You in the experience you use, do not assume that the feature is available in that market or that another control has the same scope. Use Amazon’s current in-product help or privacy information for the marketplace and app you actually use, and distinguish preference editing from controls that address other data uses.
When inspecting a preference feature, note what it lets you see and change rather than assuming that it exposes the full recommendation profile. Editing a stated preference may help correct an interest that no longer reflects you, but the feature’s description does not establish that every other source of recommendation-related information is cleared or changed at the same time.
Recommendation controls are not the same as advertising controls
Amazon’s privacy notice discusses information related to recommendations, including recently viewed products that are the basis for recommendations. It also describes settings for certain data uses and personalized advertising. These are not interchangeable categories: a setting that limits personalized advertising should not be treated as a complete switch for product recommendations unless Amazon explicitly says that is what the setting does.
Before changing a setting, read its stated purpose and scope. Ask whether it concerns advertising, browsing history, preference details, or recommendations, and whether it affects one surface or a broader part of the shopping experience. A change to one category does not establish that all other recommendation-related information has been removed or that every recommendation has stopped being personalized.
This distinction matters in cross-retailer comparisons. A retailer may offer a control for ad personalization without offering a control that stops product suggestions, and a history-management feature may have a different purpose again. To compare controls fairly, write down their exact names and stated effects. Avoid reducing them to a single yes-or-no question such as “Can I turn personalization off?” unless the retailer clearly describes a comprehensive opt-out.

Why AWS Amazon Personalize does not explain Amazon.com’s recommender
AWS offers Amazon Personalize as a developer service that organizations can use to build recommendation systems. Its technical documentation describes approaches that can use interaction data and metadata, adapt recommendations as recent events are recorded for supported use cases, and filter results to exclude items or constrain a returned list.
This is useful context for understanding how a retailer-built recommender can work. It is not evidence that Amazon.com’s retail site uses Amazon Personalize, or that its consumer recommendations use the same implementation. The service’s documentation should not be presented as a disclosure of Amazon’s own retail system.
What scores and exploration mean in the service documentation
For certain Amazon Personalize recipes, a score is a relative estimate of a user’s likelihood of interacting with items. It is not a product-quality rating, proof that a product suits a shopper, or a guarantee that the top-ranked item is the best choice. Exploration can introduce items that would otherwise be less likely to appear, and filters can change which items are returned. The visible order or presence of an item can therefore reflect more than a simple ranking of product quality.

Those details apply to the documented developer service, not automatically to Amazon.com. They illustrate a general point for interpreting recommendation feeds: a system’s output may reflect its objective, available inputs, exploration settings, and constraints—not an impartial verdict about which product is best.
For example, a system designed to surface a broader range of items may show something less familiar than a system focused on likely interactions. A filter can also remove items that otherwise might have appeared. These possibilities explain why a displayed list should be interpreted in light of the system’s stated purpose and constraints when those details are available. They do not tell shoppers which objective Amazon.com or another retailer uses for any particular row.
How to compare recommendation experiences fairly
A useful comparison looks at the same kinds of evidence on the same surface, in the same country, and at roughly the same time. It separates what a retailer explicitly discloses from what a shopper might infer by watching a feed. It also separates how a system works from whether it works well for a particular task.

| Question | What to check | What the answer can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Which signals are disclosed? | Look for statements about purchases, searches, viewed products, Lists, reviews, conversations, or other activity. | What the retailer says it uses. A missing disclosure is not proof that a signal is or is not used. |
| What type of suggestion is shown? | Record whether it is account-personalized, tied to the current item, a popularity list, or a conversational response. | Whether the compared rows serve the same purpose. Similar placement does not prove similar logic. |
| What can a customer control? | Check for preference review or editing, browsing-history controls, and recommendation or advertising settings. | The stated scope of each control. An advertising opt-out is not automatically a recommendation opt-out. |
| How fresh is the context? | Look for a disclosure that recent activity changes suggestions, and identify the surface where that applies. | Whether the retailer describes adaptation to recent activity. Do not infer recency behavior from one observed change alone. |
| Is recommendation quality measured? | Look for a defined outcome, comparable test conditions, and a published evaluation method. | Whether there is evidence of performance, rather than simply a claim or personalized label. |
For Amazon, public descriptions identify shopping signals and describe About You as a way to review and edit preference details. The evidence summarized here does not establish a comparable set of disclosures and controls for other retailers. A filled-in comparison chart should therefore mark unsupported cells as unknown rather than treating silence as a negative finding.

A page may let you edit a preference, but a shopper would still need a defined test to assess whether that change altered relevant suggestions. A control can be useful to know about without proving that one retailer offers more control overall than another.
A practical comparison you can run yourself
You can compare what different retailers show you without mistaking a personal observation for a controlled study. Keep the task and account conditions as similar as practical, record what you see, and describe the result as your experience—not as proof of how a retailer’s system works for everyone.
- Choose one shopping task. Pick a product category and a clear need, such as finding a replacement item or comparing options for one use. Avoid switching to a different task at each retailer.
- Use the same country and comparable surfaces. Record the marketplace, date, app or website, and whether you are signed in. Compare like with like—for example, homepage recommendations with homepage recommendations—not a personalized homepage at one retailer with a general bestseller list at another.
- Describe the recommendation format. Note the label and placement, if shown, and whether the suggestion appears tied to your account, the item you are viewing, a broad list, or a conversation. Do not infer a hidden signal solely from a product’s appearance in a row.
- Inspect the retailer’s stated controls. Look for preference details, browsing-history options, recommendation settings, and advertising settings. Record the setting’s actual description and scope instead of grouping all of them under “turn off recommendations.”
- Change only a documented preference or history control. Where a retailer explains what a control changes, use that control and then revisit the same surface and task. Record what changed, if anything. A change after one adjustment is an observation, not proof of the algorithm’s full design.
- Separate relevance from quality. Decide in advance what would make a suggestion useful for your task. A relevant item may still be poor quality, unsuitable, or worse value; a good product may appear for reasons unrelated to personalization.
- Keep the conclusion narrow. Report the marketplace, date, surface, account state, task, and control used. Say what you observed rather than declaring one retailer more accurate or more private overall.
For a useful personal test, keep a short record of the items shown, the labels attached to them, and the settings you changed. Do not change several controls at once if you want to understand which adjustment was associated with a difference. Even then, a before-and-after observation can be affected by other changes in the page or available products, so describe it cautiously.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What evidence would support a real winner?
To claim that one retailer’s recommendations are more accurate, a comparison would need to define “accurate” for a specific shopping task and measure outcomes under comparable conditions. For example, the question might be whether recommendations help shoppers find an item they consider relevant—not whether one feed simply displays more products that look similar.

In broad terms, coverage concerns how much of the available item set a system can recommend, while mean reciprocal rank reflects how highly relevant results appear in a ranked list. Such measures answer different questions: greater coverage is not automatically better for an individual shopper, and high placement does not establish product quality.

These measures need an evaluation context. A broad catalog can make coverage look different from a smaller one, and a ranked-list measure depends on how relevance is defined and judged. Offline evaluation uses available data to assess a system; online evaluation can test outcomes in use, with A/B testing comparing experiences under a specified test design. No single metric automatically answers whether shoppers received better advice, found better value, or made a more satisfying choice.
Those evaluation concepts concern the developer service. They are not published comparative results for Amazon’s retail site versus other retailers. A credible retailer-to-retailer conclusion would require comparable definitions, test populations, surfaces, dates, and outcome measures; randomized online testing can help assess effects under real use. No comparative statistic or test result established here supports a ranking of named retailers.
What shoppers can reasonably conclude
- Amazon says purchase history, Alexa for Shopping conversations, reviews, Lists, and searches contribute to shopping personalization.
- Amazon describes recommendations across the homepage and shopping journey, and also refers to personalized deals and emails.
- About You is described as a place to review and edit some preference details used for recommendations, not as a complete account-data report.
- Amazon’s privacy notice distinguishes recommendation-related information from settings for other data uses and personalized advertising.
- AWS Amazon Personalize documentation explains a developer service; it does not establish the implementation behind Amazon.com’s retail recommendations.
- The available evidence does not establish which retailer has the most accurate recommendations, the deepest personalization, or the strongest privacy controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Amazon decide what to recommend?
Amazon says shopping personalization can draw on purchase history, Alexa for Shopping conversations, product reviews, Lists, and searches. It also says shopping activity informs recommendations on the homepage and throughout the shopping journey. Those statements do not disclose the exact inputs or rules behind every individual recommendation.

Availability can vary by marketplace, app version, and surface, and Amazon does not describe it as a complete view of every account detail that may affect recommendations.
Does turning off personalized ads stop product recommendations?
Not necessarily. Amazon’s privacy notice discusses recommendation-related information and personalized advertising as distinct data uses and settings. Check the stated scope of a specific setting rather than treating an advertising control as a complete recommendation opt-out.
Is Amazon Personalize the system behind Amazon.com recommendations?
The available documentation describes Amazon Personalize as an AWS developer service organizations can use to build recommendation systems. It does not establish that Amazon.com’s retail site uses that service or the same implementation.
Are Amazon’s recommendations better than those from other retailers?
There is no comparable, sourced performance evaluation here that ranks Amazon against other named retailers. A fair answer would need a defined measure of recommendation quality and comparable testing on the same kinds of surfaces and shopping tasks.
The Bottom Line
Amazon says purchases, searches, reviews, Lists, and Alexa for Shopping conversations inform shopping personalization, and describes About You as a way to review and edit some preference details. That is useful disclosure, but it is not a complete technical audit or proof of superior recommendations. Compare retailer-specific disclosures, controls, and measured outcomes on equivalent surfaces before calling any retailer the winner.
