Amazon Luna Went Back to 1980s Tokyo With Yakuza 0 in June 2021

Yakuza 0 was the “80s Tokyo” game announced for Amazon Luna, arriving on June 24, 2021. Sega’s crime drama joined The Falconeer and Killer Queen Black as announced additions to the Luna+ channel that month.

What game was the “80s Tokyo” Luna release?

The headline referred to Yakuza 0, Sega’s prequel and origin story for the series. It is set in 1988, during Japan’s bubble-economy period. The Tokyo portion is Kamurocho, a fictionalized entertainment district; the game also moves to Sotenbori, its fictionalized Osaka setting. “80s Tokyo” is therefore promotional shorthand, not a claim that the entire game takes place in Tokyo.

Sega listed Amazon Luna as a supported platform, alongside other versions, and identified June 24, 2021 as the Luna launch date.

What is Yakuza 0 about?

Two protagonists

The story follows two younger versions of series leads. Kazuma Kiryu, a low-ranking yakuza, becomes involved in a conflict over a small but strategically important vacant lot in Kamurocho. In Sotenbori, Goro Majima manages a struggling cabaret club while facing pressures of his own. Their stories connect through organized crime, property development and a redevelopment project tied to the series’ later Millennium Tower mythology. Sega’s official story summary gives the premise without requiring spoilers.

Action-adventure rather than turn-based RPG

Yakuza 0 is a third-person action-adventure crime drama with real-time combat, character progression and multiple fighting styles. Players explore dense urban districts and can spend time on side stories, businesses, arcades, gambling, karaoke, clubs and other minigames. It has RPG-style progression, but its battles are action-based rather than turn-based.

When did it arrive on Luna?

Yakuza 0 launched on Amazon Luna on June 24, 2021. That date describes its Luna debut, not the game’s first release overall. The June announcement was published on May 27, 2021, as a catalog update for the then-existing Luna+ channel.

What else joined Luna in June 2021?

Game What it offered
The Falconeer An open-world aerial-combat game in which players pilot a giant warbird through fantasy battles and exploration.
Killer Queen Black A competitive, team-based multiplayer game derived from the arcade title Killer Queen.

These were the other confirmed games in the June 2021 Luna+ announcement. The contemporaneous coverage left open the possibility of additional releases later in the month, but it did not establish a larger confirmed list.

Why Yakuza 0 was the headline addition

For a cloud-gaming library, Yakuza 0 brought a recognizable Sega property with two protagonists, a substantial story and unusually broad side content. Its neon-lit 1988 setting, arcade diversions and contrasting Kiryu and Majima campaigns made it a prominent single-player addition, while the other two games covered aerial action and competitive multiplayer.

Can you play this 2021 Luna version today?

This is an archival 2021 availability story, not a current Luna catalog update. Amazon substantially changed Luna in 2026: it discontinued game stores, individual purchases and third-party subscriptions, and says previously purchased or “Bring Your Own Library” titles stopped being playable on Luna after June 10, 2026. See Amazon’s June 2026 Luna update and its current policy notice. Consequently, you should not assume that the 2021 Luna listing for Yakuza 0 remains playable.

For non-Luna options, Sega’s official platform page lists PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions. Those local versions should not be confused with the later Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut edition associated with newer platform releases.
