Amazon told the outlet it had removed the books it identified. The report documented a specific episode and user complaints—not how common these ads were, how the ads were selected, or whether the books had been independently verified as AI-generated.
What Kindle users reported seeing
In an article published March 28, 2024, Futurism reporter Frank Landymore described ads for books appearing on Kindle lock screens, including examples he considered blatantly AI-generated. The report included sample titles and covers that appeared to him to be AI-generated. It also described books that seemed to imitate existing works, including one the reporter characterized as an imitation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Those descriptions are the reporter’s observations, not the result of a published forensic examination of each book’s creation process. The article also recounted complaints from Kindle users, including one Reddit user who wrote, “I’ve never minded the ads on them… until they became flooded with AI-generated books.” Futurism said that post had more than 700 upvotes at the time. That is an individual complaint, not a survey or a measure of how often Kindle users saw such ads.
Why ads appear on Kindle lock screens
Amazon says that on devices that include ads, sponsored screensavers appear on the lock and home screens. Its Kindle and Fire tablet help page describes personalized advertising as a way to offer some device models at a subsidized price. The 2024 report concerned these device screens, not advertisements displayed inside an ebook.
The report does not establish why any particular book ad was selected. It mentions possible explanations, but offers no evidence confirming them. Nor does it establish that Kindle lock screens were broadly or consistently flooded with AI-generated book ads; it gives examples and user accounts without a representative rate.

What Amazon said it did
Futurism reported that Amazon removed the books the outlet had identified. In its March 28, 2024 article, it quoted an unnamed Amazon spokesperson as saying, “All books in the store must adhere to our content guidelines, regardless of how the content was created.” The spokesperson also said Amazon prevents some books from being listed and removes books that do not meet its guidelines, and that ads must meet Amazon Advertising Guidelines and Acceptance policies.
This was Amazon’s response to the titles identified in that report at that time. It does not establish that every similar listing was removed or that similar ads cannot appear again.

What Amazon’s current KDP policy says about AI
Amazon’s KDP Content Guidelines, accessed September 30, 2026, require publishers to tell Amazon when a book contains AI-generated text, images, or translations. The requirement applies when publishing a new book and when editing and republishing an existing one. Under the policy, content remains AI-generated even if the publisher substantially edits material first created by an AI tool.
| Type of work | KDP’s description | Disclosure to Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| AI-generated | Text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool, including material later substantially edited by the publisher. | Required when publishing or republishing, under the guidance accessed September 30, 2026. |
| AI-assisted | Work created by a person who uses AI to edit, refine, error-check, or improve it, or uses AI to brainstorm but creates the final text or images themselves. | Not required for the examples described in KDP’s guidance accessed September 30, 2026. |
The disclosure described in KDP’s policy is made to Amazon. The cited guidance does not say that Amazon publicly labels AI-generated books on product pages or in ads. Publishers remain responsible for complying with Amazon’s content and intellectual-property rules.

Does a later ad-buying option explain the 2024 ads?
No. On April 24, 2026, Amazon Ads announced that US self-service advertisers could buy Kindle eReader lock-screen placements through Amazon DSP open auction to promote their ebooks. That later announcement identifies an advertising option available to those advertisers in the United States; it does not establish how the ads described by Futurism in 2024 were purchased.

Can you stop seeing these ads?
The sources cited here confirm that sponsored screensavers appear on Kindle devices that include ads, but they do not establish a current, universal setting or price for removing ads across Kindle models and countries. Device options can vary by model and market, so check the settings or support information for your specific Kindle rather than relying on prices reported in 2024. The 2024 article did not test a setting or demonstrate that changing one prevents exposure to similar book ads.
