It runs Fire OS, Amazon’s operating system for Fire tablets and Fire TV devices. “Fire tablet” describes a range of models and generations, not one device with a fixed set of specifications.
What does “Amazon Fire tablet” mean?
Amazon’s tablet family includes product lines such as Fire, Fire HD, and Fire HDX. A model name such as Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10 indicates the display’s diagonal size; it does not tell you every detail about that tablet. Features, specifications, and software vary by model and generation.

Amazon’s overview also includes older, discontinued devices. A Fire tablet can therefore still be in use even if it is no longer a current retail model.

Is a Fire tablet an Android tablet?
Fire OS is based on Android: Amazon describes it as a fork of Android. That relationship does not guarantee that every Android app, service, or developer feature will work on a Fire tablet. Compatibility depends on the particular app and the services it requires.

For example, Amazon says Google Mobile Services do not work on Fire tablets. Its developer FAQ specifically warns that apps using Google’s in-app billing technology will not work and points developers to Amazon’s In-App Purchasing API. That developer guidance is not a blanket statement that every app with a Google connection is incompatible.
What varies between Fire tablet models?
Screen size is only one difference. To understand a particular device, check its generation and release year, screen resolution, memory, storage and MicroSD support, and Fire OS or Android API version. Do not assume that a newer-sounding model name or year automatically means a better fit; compare the specifications for the exact devices and intended use.

For one specific example, Amazon lists the Fire HD 8 (2024) as 12th Gen. Its specifications include an 8-inch display, 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage, and MicroSD expansion up to 1 TB. The listed software is Fire OS 8, with Android 11 API level 30. Those figures describe that model, not the Fire tablet family as a whole.

How do I find out which Fire tablet I have?
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device Options.
- Look for Device Model or About Fire Tablet to find the model information.
Once you have the model, use its exact name and generation when checking specifications or app compatibility. Amazon’s device tables distinguish models by hardware and software, so the family name alone may not be specific enough.
Is a Fire tablet the same as a Kindle?
“Kindle” should not be used as a catch-all name for current Fire tablets. Amazon’s naming history includes Kindle Fire as an earlier product name, while its device overview distinguishes Fire tablet models and generations. For clarity, call the device a Fire tablet and use its model name when you know it.
