You buy the device upfront, while subscriptions such as Amazon Kids+ or Prime, paid apps, and in-app purchases are optional. If you choose to pay for the hardware in installments, those payments go toward the tablet—not a required service.
What does a Fire tablet cost each month?
There is no required monthly service charge for the tablet itself. Amazon’s terms distinguish device payment plans from subscriptions: installments, if offered for your purchase, are payments toward the hardware. Amazon does not state a universal current device price in the sources cited here, so check the product page for the model and region you are considering. Amazon’s payment terms

Which costs are optional?
| Cost | Required? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Kids profiles and parental controls | No | Amazon says Amazon Kids is free on Fire tablets. Parents can create child profiles, select content, and set time limits; compatible-device profile creation has no additional cost. Amazon Developer’s Fire Tablet FAQ · Amazon Customer Service: What Is Amazon Kids? |
| Amazon Kids+ | No | A separate subscription for children’s books, video, apps, games, audio, and music. Any included trial or promotional period and renewal price depend on the device offer and account. |
| Prime | No | A separate membership, not a Fire tablet fee. |
| Kindle Unlimited | No | A separate subscription that can be used through the Kindle app. |
| Apps and digital content | No | Some apps or content cost extra; some apps may include ads, in-app purchases, or require another subscription. Amazon digital content and app information |
Amazon Kids is free; Amazon Kids+ is paid
The similar names can make the distinction easy to miss. Amazon Kids refers to the free child-profile and parental-control features. Kids+ is the optional content catalog subscription. Using a child profile does not, by itself, mean you have enrolled in Kids+.
Amazon’s current article lists Kids+ at $7.99 per month for Prime members and $8.99 per month for non-Prime members after the included period on Kindle Kids devices. Those figures are not a universal Fire Kids price: check the specific Fire Kids product offer and account details for its trial and renewal terms. About Amazon: Kindle Kids

What to check in a Fire Kids offer
- Whether Kids+ is included, and for how long.
- The renewal price and any membership eligibility conditions.
- Whether a case or warranty is included.
- Whether the device has lock-screen ads.
Bundle contents have changed over time. For example, Amazon’s 2018 announcement priced the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition bundle at $199.99 and included one year of FreeTime Unlimited, a kid-proof case, and a two-year worry-free guarantee. That is a historical offer, not a current price or bundle specification. The same announcement listed FreeTime Unlimited at $2.99 per month for Prime members and $4.99 for non-Prime customers after the first year; the service was later renamed Amazon Kids+, so those are not current rates. Do Prime or Kindle Unlimited come with the tablet?
They are separate subscriptions, not prerequisites for using a Fire tablet. The tablet can be used without enrolling in either service. A 2025 About Amazon article listed Kindle Unlimited at $11.99 per month plus taxes for U.S. customers, but that is a dated price reference, not a verified current rate. Check the subscription offer for your account if you want the service. About Amazon’s Prime Day 2025 article

Are lock-screen ads a monthly charge?
No. Some Fire tablet configurations may be sold at a lower price with personalized lock-screen ads. Amazon’s UK help page describes changing an eligible device originally purchased with ads to the ad-free option with a one-time payment covering the price difference. That is a device configuration charge, not a recurring subscription; availability and terms can vary by region. Amazon UK: Special Offers on Fire tablets

How to avoid surprise charges
- Check the device listing. Confirm the upfront price, whether payments are installments, and whether the model is sold with lock-screen ads.
- Read the Kids+ offer before activating it. Note the included period, renewal date, recurring price, and eligibility conditions shown for that specific Fire Kids offer.
- Review app and content purchases. Check for paid downloads, in-app purchases, and apps that require another subscription before approving charges.
- Keep optional memberships separate in your budget. Prime and Kindle Unlimited are service subscriptions; neither is a mandatory fee for tablet ownership.
