For a child under 13, create an Amazon Kids child profile on the Fire tablet, then manage its content, time limits, and access settings through the profile and Parent Dashboard. Creating a child profile on a compatible device is free; Amazon Kids+ is an optional subscription, not a setup requirement.
Set up a child profile on a Fire tablet
Amazon’s documented steps are: “Open the Settings menu. Select Profiles & Family Library. Select Add a child profile. Enter your child’s information then select Add Profile.” The menu wording can vary by device generation and software version.

Amazon describes the dashboard this way: “Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard allows parents to manage their child’s profile settings, access digital content, and stay connected to their kids’ digital activities.” It is available through a web browser and mobile app for customers with at least one child profile. The options differ somewhat by interface.

Choose what content the child can access
- Open the Parent Dashboard website or app.
- Select Content and choose the child’s profile.
- Choose a content category, then toggle items on or off.
Purchased Amazon content and Amazon Kids+ subscription content appear as separate categories. If you want the child to request store titles, enable Store access in that profile’s settings. Amazon’s content-management instructions explain the available categories and settings.
Know the content and web limits
- This workflow does not add personal documents, music, Prime Video rentals, or videos included with Prime to a child profile.
- Some apps may contain ads, external links, in-app purchases, or requests for personal information.
- Turning off web access in the child profile may not block every website: some sites may still be available within content.
Child profile or adult-profile Parental Controls?
These are separate features. Amazon directs parents of children under 13 to use a child profile. Its Fire Tablet Parental Controls are designed to restrict access on an adult profile for users 13 and older. Do not use the adult-profile restriction toggle as a substitute for setting up a young child’s profile.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For the adult-profile control, Amazon documents this path: swipe down twice to open Quick Settings, select Settings > Profile and Parental Controls, turn on Restrict access to current profile, enter and confirm a password, then select Finish. A lock icon appears when the restriction is enabled. Consult Amazon’s adult-profile Parental Controls instructions for details.
Keep the parental-controls credential safe
The password for adult-profile Parental Controls is different from the tablet’s lock-screen password. Amazon says forgetting it requires a factory reset to restore full access. Its Parent Dashboard help page gives separate recovery instructions for a forgotten parental-controls PIN, including deregistering and reregistering the device. Because the pages describe different controls and use different terms, follow the recovery instructions for the exact interface and credential you set up; do not assume “password” and “PIN” are interchangeable.
Manage or remove a child profile
Amazon says profiles can be created or managed through Parent Dashboard or Amazon Family. Its profile-management policy states that a child profile inactive for more than 18 months is removed automatically. Amazon distinguishes removing a profile from Parent Dashboard from removing it from the Amazon account; check the profile management instructions before removing one.
Device and menu compatibility
Amazon’s Quick Start Guides index includes Fire HD 10 Kids and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (13th Generation), as well as Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (12th Generation, 2024 Release), among other devices. These are examples of current guide listings, not a requirement to buy a particular model. Use the guide for your tablet if menu names or locations differ; available features depend on device compatibility and software version. Amazon’s device-specific profile guidance and Quick Start Guides index provide model references.
