Restarting is worth trying before a factory reset: a reset can erase personal information and disconnect devices. The right reset instructions depend on your Echo model.
Start with power and a basic response check
- Make sure the Echo is plugged in and use the power adapter supplied with that device. Amazon recommends the supplied adapter when troubleshooting voice-response problems. Amazon’s voice troubleshooting guide covers this check.
- If Alexa does not answer, look at the light indicator. A red indicator means the microphone is muted; press the microphone button to unmute it.
- On an Echo speaker, press the Action button. If the device responds to the button but not to your voice, focus on the microphone setting and listening conditions rather than assuming the Echo has failed.
If Alexa does not hear or answer you
Move the Echo away from walls, other speakers, and background noise, then try a short request. Amazon suggests asking, “Did you hear me?” to check whether Alexa heard you. If the Echo responds to the Action button, test voice commands again after checking mute status and moving the device to a clearer listening position. See Amazon’s voice-response troubleshooting steps.

If the Echo will not connect to Wi-Fi
- Check whether the internet works elsewhere. Use another device on the same network. If it cannot get online either, the problem may be with the router or internet connection, not the Echo.
- Bring the Echo closer to the router. Amazon’s UK troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) and away from potential interference, including microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics. Read Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the password and network settings. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully. If you recently changed it, update the Echo’s Wi-Fi settings using the instructions for your model.
- Restart the router and Echo if other devices are also offline. If other devices connect successfully but the Echo does not, check its password and whether reducing the number of connected devices helps.
Restart before considering a reset
A restart is a lower-disruption step than a factory reset. For setup troubleshooting, Amazon says to unplug the Echo, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Its separate instructions for restarting an unresponsive 3rd- or 4th-generation Echo specify a 10-second unplug interval. These directions come from different support contexts, so use the one that matches your issue and model rather than treating either interval as universal. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Alexa answers but a smart-home device does not
Test the light, plug, or other accessory in its manufacturer’s app. If it does not work there, investigate that product or its internet connection first. If the manufacturer’s app works but Alexa cannot control the accessory, check the Alexa skill and device connection; Amazon advises reactivating the skill when appropriate. This can help distinguish an accessory or skill issue from an Echo problem. Amazon’s smart-home troubleshooting guidance

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Reset only when simpler steps fail
Amazon recommends trying a restart and other setup checks before resetting. Reset procedures vary by model, so find your exact Echo on Amazon’s Echo device support index before using a button combination.
Echo 3rd and 4th generation
Amazon documents separate procedures for these models: one reset option keeps smart-home connections, while a factory reset removes personal information and device and smart-home connections. The listed button procedures use a 20-second hold, but that detail applies to the specified generations only. After a factory reset, set up the Echo again. Check Amazon’s model-specific reset instructions before proceeding.

Other Echo models
Do not assume the 3rd- or 4th-generation button instructions apply to an Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Pop, Echo Studio, or another model. Select the exact device in Amazon’s support index and follow its instructions.

If the Echo still will not power on, connect, or respond after the relevant checks and model-specific restart or reset, the steps here do not establish whether the device has a hardware fault or is covered by a warranty. Use Amazon support for the exact model and issue rather than applying another model’s reset procedure or assuming a generic power adapter is compatible.
