Amazon CloudFront delivers video files to viewers; it does not encode or package raw video for you. First prepare a stream as segmented video plus a manifest, choose an origin, then configure a CloudFront distribution to serve those files over HTTPS with cache behavior matched to the format. The setup differs for on-demand video (VOD) and live streaming.
Choose a VOD or live architecture
On-demand video
For VOD, encode and package the source into a manifest and segments before CloudFront serves it. A common AWS workflow is AWS Elemental MediaConvert for encoding and packaging, Amazon S3 for storage, and CloudFront for delivery. CloudFront fetches an object from the origin when it is not already cached, then can serve cached objects to later requests. AWS lists formats including MPEG-DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. AWS: Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront.
Live video
For a live event or continuous channel, AWS describes MediaLive for real-time encoding, followed by MediaStore or MediaPackage as the origin path and CloudFront for viewer delivery. MediaPackage is worth considering when the workflow needs multiple delivery formats such as HLS, DASH, or CMAF. Your encoder and packaging configuration determine the manifest and segment paths CloudFront must route.
Choose between VOD and live, required formats, origin, latency needs (including whether you need LL-HLS), public or restricted playback, viewer geography, expected workload, and operational complexity. There is no universally best service combination or cost without those workload details. AWS also names Wowza tools for CloudFront live HTTP streaming and Unified Streaming tools for CloudFront VOD; check their current vendor documentation before selecting them.

Set up a CloudFront distribution
The following sequence uses AWS’s Media Services setup for live delivery and its S3 tutorial for VOD. Console labels and service behavior can change; confirm the current AWS documentation for your account and workflow before implementing.
- Encode and package the video. Identify the actual output format and manifest and segment extensions. AWS states, “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute it.” For VOD, package the files before storing them in S3 or another server. For live, configure MediaLive and the selected MediaStore or MediaPackage path.
- Choose and verify the origin. Use the S3 location for stored VOD, or the relevant MediaPackage or MediaStore endpoint for live. Record the exact endpoint hostname and path; the distribution’s origin and behaviors must match them.
- Create the distribution and add the origin. Configure CloudFront with that origin and any required origin path. AWS’s MediaPackage instructions note that a wildcard
*behavior needs a route; their example uses a dummy origin so unmatched requests are not sent to the real endpoint. Do not let a catch-all route unintentionally expose or misroute requests. - Add format-specific cache behaviors. Route manifests and segments according to the endpoint and packaging configuration actually in use. AWS examples for live MediaPackage include HLS manifest
*.m3u8and segment*.tsbehaviors; CMAF uses*.m3u8and*.mp4; DASH uses*.mpdand*.mp4. VOD paths can include the packaging-configuration GUID, so do not copy a live pattern blindly. See AWS: Deliver video streaming with CloudFront and AWS Media Services. - Require HTTPS and set cache-key inputs. AWS’s MediaPackage procedure selects Redirect HTTP to HTTPS and describes a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help prevent stale live content. For live MediaPackage manifests, include the
mquery string in the cache policy. For LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, include_HLS_msnand_HLS_partas well. VOD manifest filtering may require forwardingaws.manifestfilter. Forward only the query strings needed by the workflow, and ensure the cache key varies on parameters that change the response. - Protect the origin and viewer access separately. AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront. This controls CloudFront-to-origin access; it is distinct from restricting viewers. For private viewer playback, CloudFront supports signed URLs or signed cookies. For S3 origins, review Origin Access Control so the bucket does not need to be public. See AWS: Ways to use CloudFront.
- Add a custom domain if needed. The S3 and CloudFront tutorial describes an optional Route 53 domain and an AWS Certificate Manager certificate for HTTPS on that domain. If you do not need a branded hostname, use the distribution hostname instead. Follow AWS’s S3, CloudFront, and Route 53 video tutorial for that VOD path.
- Wait for deployment and test playback. For the MediaPackage procedure, wait until the distribution status is no longer Deploying before using it. Request the manifest through CloudFront, then confirm that its listed segments resolve through the intended behaviors. Test with the same query parameters, access controls, and playback format your viewers will use.
Validate the delivery path
- Open the CloudFront manifest URL in the intended player and check that it returns a valid playlist or manifest, not an access error or an HTML error page.
- Inspect manifest requests and confirm that each segment URL points to the expected CloudFront distribution and path.
- For live delivery, confirm that the manifest updates as expected and that the cache policy preserves required query parameters. For LL-HLS, test the blocking playlist request parameters as well.
- Test restricted playback with an authorized viewer and an unauthorized request to confirm that signed URLs or cookies behave as intended.
- When a request fails, use the response status and requested path to identify whether the problem is packaging, origin routing, behavior matching, cache-key configuration, or access control.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The player cannot load the manifest
Check that the video was packaged and that the manifest extension and path match a CloudFront behavior. Confirm the origin hostname and path, distribution deployment state, and any required query string. A raw source video is not a substitute for the manifest-and-segment output expected by adaptive streaming.

The manifest loads, but segments fail
Compare segment URLs in the manifest with the segment behavior pattern and origin path. HLS transport-stream segments may use *.ts, while CMAF or DASH examples use *.mp4. A behavior that matches the manifest but not the segment extension leaves the player unable to retrieve the media.
Live playback is stale or does not advance
Review the live manifest cache policy. AWS describes a minimum TTL of five seconds or less for its MediaPackage setup; ensure the policy also forwards the required m query string. LL-HLS blocking playlist requests need _HLS_msn and _HLS_part forwarded and represented appropriately in the cache key.

CloudFront returns an origin or authorization error
Verify that the request reaches the intended behavior and origin, and that the origin endpoint and path are correct. For MediaPackage, check the header-based CDN authorization between CloudFront and the origin. For private playback, separately check the viewer’s signed URL or cookie. For S3, check Origin Access Control and bucket permissions.
A custom hostname does not serve HTTPS
Check that the domain is associated with the distribution and that the required AWS Certificate Manager certificate and DNS routing are configured. The AWS tutorial’s Route 53 and certificate steps are optional for a custom domain; the distribution hostname remains an alternative.

Costs and operational trade-offs
The AWS setup documentation does not establish a single best service combination or price for an unspecified stream. Costs depend on factors such as geography, traffic, bitrate, live versus VOD use, latency requirements, and retention. Compare the architecture and workload before estimating service charges; do not assume CloudFront alone covers encoding, packaging, storage, or live origin services.
