The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is a larger, more expensive tablet that runs Android with full Google Play Store access, which Fire OS tablets such as the Fire HD 10 do not offer. In the US, Amazon’s launch price is $499.99 for the standard display and $549.99 for the anti-glare Nanomatte model. Launch coverage cited $155 for the Fire HD 10. That gap is large, so the upgrade makes sense mainly if you need Google Play apps, a 12-inch screen, or the Nanomatte finish. If your Fire HD 10 already handles streaming and reading well, Amazon’s announcement alone does not make a case for replacing it.
This article is based on Amazon’s October 8, 2026 announcement and launch-period coverage from Quartz, Frandroid, Engadget and 01net. Amazon’s performance, battery, glare and reading claims have not been confirmed by independent hands-on testing in that coverage, and each one is labeled as a manufacturer claim below.

What Amazon announced, and when it ships
Amazon announced the Alexa Tablet lineup on October 8, 2026, in a post by Kevin Keith, Amazon’s Vice President of Devices. The lineup is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the Alexa Tablet 11 and the Alexa Tablet 8. Amazon describes the three sizes as starting at $229, which refers to the lineup’s entry point rather than the 12 Pro.

Side-by-side specifications
The table compares the two tablets using the values available in launch-period sources. Where a value was not stated in those sources, the cell says so instead of guessing. Fire HD 10 figures come from Engadget’s launch-day comparison and Quartz’s launch pricing. Engadget’s article did not confirm the exact Fire HD 10 generation, so check Amazon’s current listing for the model you own.

Fire HD 10 tablets run Fire OS and draw apps from the Amazon Appstore. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro runs Android with full Google Play Store access. Amazon says that includes apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs, alongside Amazon’s own apps.

- Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
- Fast and responsive with long battery life - With up to 4 GB RAM (2X more than 2022 release), 64GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately). Hexa-core processor for fast, responsive performance. Up to 13 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching videos, gaming, and listening to music at home and on-the-go.
- Save time, get creative - Enjoy three smart tools to help you send polished emails, quickly summarize webpages, and create unique wallpapers.
- Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
This matters most if you have been unable to install an app you need on a Fire tablet. Before deciding, confirm the following:
- Whether each app you rely on is listed in Google Play for Android tablets in your country.
- Whether your current Fire HD 10 has any apps you would have to replace or repurchase.
- Whether you are comfortable with an Android tablet’s settings, notification controls and app permissions, which differ from Fire OS.
Display: a larger screen, and an optional anti-glare finish
Standard display
The 12 Pro has a 12-inch display with 280 PPI, a 120Hz refresh rate and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Compared with a 10.1-inch screen, the extra size is the most visible difference for video, reading and split-screen work. The 120Hz refresh rate is an Amazon specification; Amazon’s announcement does not say how it affects motion in specific apps, and launch coverage did not test it.
Nanomatte model
The Nanomatte version costs $549.99 and uses a precision-etched anti-glare display that Amazon says was developed with Corning. Only this configuration is described as anti-glare. Frandroid notes that Amazon’s product-sheet claims about it require testing. Glare reduction, outdoor readability and eye strain are therefore claims to evaluate, not established results, and the announcement does not give comparisons against any specific screen.
Reading and Kindle mode
Kindle mode is the reading feature Amazon emphasizes most. According to the announcement, it silences notifications, reduces blue light, offers three display themes and can provide up to 20 hours of reading. Those figures are manufacturer claims. Amazon did not describe test conditions, and launch coverage did not measure battery life or eye comfort independently.

- Like-New Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is refurbished, tested, and certified to look and work like new and comes with the same limited warranty as a new device. Like-New Amazon devices may be packaged in generic Amazon-branded boxes.
- Do what you love, uninterrupted — 25% faster performance than the previous generation and 3 GB RAM are ideal for seamless streaming, reading, and gaming.
- High-def entertainment — A 10.1" 1080p Full HD display brings brilliant color to all your shows and games. Binge watch longer with 13-hour battery, 32 or 64 GB of storage, and up to 1 TB expandable storage with micro-SD card (sold separately).
- Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
- Stay up to speed — Use the 5 MP front-facing camera to Zoom with family and friends, or create content for social apps like Instagram and TikTok.
If you already read on a Fire HD 10, the new mode is a convenience rather than a necessity. The larger screen and anti-glare option will matter more than the mode itself for many readers, and only you can judge whether those features justify the higher price.
Alexa+ and On-Screen Intelligence
Amazon says Alexa+ is “built into the core of every tablet, from a personalized home screen to hands-free live sessions.” The announcement names those features but does not explain how they perform in daily use.
Amazon also describes On-Screen Intelligence, which lets Alexa see what is on the display. According to Amazon, it is off by default, requires a deliberate opt-in and shows an indicator when Alexa can see the screen. Those are the controls Amazon has announced. They are not a general privacy or security guarantee, so review the setting during setup and decide whether you want it on.
Performance: what Amazon claims
Amazon says the 12 Pro delivers nearly three times the processing speed and nine times the graphics performance of any tablet it had shipped previously. These are Amazon’s own comparisons against its earlier tablets, not independent benchmark results, and the announcement does not list the test workloads or configurations used. Treat them as directional until a reviewer measures the tablet under comparable conditions.

- BRIGHT DISPLAY - Clear 10.1" 1080p Full HD display with more than 2 million pixels. Fire HD 10 is almost 20% brighter than Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
- LONG LASTING BATTERY - 12-hour battery and 32 or 64 GB internal storage. Add up to 1 TB with microSD (sold separately).
- DESIGNED TO BE RESPONSIVE - Fast octa-core processor and 3 GB RAM.
- ENJOY DOWNTIME- Enjoy your favorite apps like Netflix, Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
- STAY CONNECTED - Download apps like Zoom, or ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family.
Accessories and the real cost
The Pro Pen costs $89.99 and the Pro Keyboard costs $149.99, both at announced US prices and both sold separately. Adding both to the standard 12 Pro brings the list total to $739.97. Adding both to the Nanomatte model brings it to $789.97.
Compared with the $155 Fire HD 10 price cited at launch, the standard 12 Pro tablet alone costs $344.99 more, and the Nanomatte model costs $394.99 more. Those differences reflect the launch configurations and may not match current prices or storage options. Accessories matter only if you need handwriting, markup, typing or trackpad use. Amazon’s announcement does not name a protective case, so any case you buy should be checked for compatibility with the exact model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support and continuity for Fire tablets
Quartz reported that Amazon planned to continue supporting existing Fire tablets but had ended production of new Fire units. That is launch-period reporting, not a current support commitment. Before relying on it, check Amazon’s current support terms for your device. If you plan to replace a Fire HD 10 with another Fire model, confirm that the model is still available to buy in your country.

You need Google Play apps
This is the strongest case for the 12 Pro. If an app you rely on is missing from the Amazon Appstore and available in Google Play, the software change alone may justify the price. Confirm the app’s availability on Android tablets in your region first.

You want a bigger screen for reading, video or multitasking
The 12-inch display is a real change from a 10.1-inch screen. Whether it is worth roughly $345 more at launch depends on how often you use the tablet for those activities and whether you would also buy the Pro Pen or Pro Keyboard.
You read outdoors or in bright rooms
The Nanomatte model is the only option Amazon describes as anti-glare. It is the one to consider if reflections are your main problem, but you should wait for independent testing before assuming it will solve glare.
You write, mark up or type on the tablet
The Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard make the 12 Pro more useful for productivity, but they raise the total cost to nearly $740 or more. Compare that with a laptop or your existing setup before deciding.

You mainly stream video and read on a working Fire HD 10
Nothing in the announcement shows that the 12 Pro would meaningfully improve those activities for you. Unless you need Google Play apps, the larger screen or the anti-glare option, keeping the Fire HD 10 is the reasonable choice, especially given the $155 versus $499.99 gap at launch.
