If Alt+Tab seems broken, start by checking whether it is doing what Windows is designed to do. In most cases the shortcut is working, but the switcher shows a different set of windows than you expected, or the key sequence isn’t being held the way you think it is. Microsoft’s official documentation describes how the shortcut and its related settings behave. It does not identify one universal cause or one confirmed repair for a shortcut that stops responding completely, so the steps below separate normal behavior and configuration from a genuine input or Windows fault.
How Alt+Tab is supposed to work
Microsoft Support describes the shortcut this way: “The Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut allows you to quickly switch between open applications in the current desktop.” (Microsoft Support, “How to Multitask in Windows”). The sequence is:

- Press and hold Alt.
- Tap Tab once. The switcher opens and the next window is highlighted.
- Keep Alt held and tap Tab again to move further through the list.
- Release Alt when the window you want is selected. Windows activates it at that point.
Two common mistakes produce the appearance of a broken shortcut. Releasing Alt after the first Tab simply switches to the previously used window, so it can look as though nothing else was offered. Pressing Tab without holding Alt does not open the switcher at all.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuilt-in alternatives to try while you diagnose the problem
These routes use the same window list through a different interface, which makes them useful for working while you test Alt+Tab.

| Method | How to use it | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Tab | Press the Windows key and Tab together. Select a window, or use the arrow keys and Enter. | Task View, which lists open windows and desktops. Microsoft lists it as “Windows key + Tab | Open Task View” in its keyboard shortcuts reference. |
| Task View button | Select the Task View button on the taskbar. If it is missing, see the taskbar customization steps in Microsoft’s taskbar guide. | The same Task View display as Windows+Tab. |
| Ctrl+Alt+Tab | Press Ctrl, Alt and Tab together, then use the arrow keys to move between windows and press Enter to choose one. | Thumbnails of open apps, which stay on screen until you make a selection. |
If Windows+Tab works but Alt+Tab does not, the problem is more likely to be specific to the Alt+Tab switcher than to the whole keyboard. If none of the three routes responds, the issue is more likely to be the keyboard, input focus, or Windows itself.
Check what the switcher includes
Many reports of “wrong windows” come from settings rather than faults. Two settings control what appears.

Browser tabs in Multitasking settings
Go to Settings > System > Multitasking. Review the option labeled “Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab.” Microsoft documents choices for excluding browser tabs from the switcher or including a set of recent Edge tabs (see How to Multitask in Windows). If your switcher suddenly lists individual tabs where you expected whole windows, this setting is the likely reason. The exact wording and option list vary by Windows version, so match the labels on your own screen rather than relying on a specific menu text.
Virtual desktop visibility
Windows can limit Alt+Tab to windows on the current virtual desktop, or show windows from all desktops. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance on focus and task management covers the broader multitasking options (see Make it easier to focus on tasks). If a window you know is open never appears, check whether it sits on another desktop. Open Task View with Windows+Tab to see which desktop each window belongs to, then switch to that desktop and try Alt+Tab again.

Separate unexpected behavior from a real failure
The two categories need different handling. Use the table to decide which one you are dealing with.
| Symptom | Most likely category | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Switcher lists the wrong set of windows, or omits a window you expected | Configuration | Multitasking tab setting and current desktop |
| Alt+Tab selects the previous window immediately | Expected behavior | Hold Alt for the full sequence |
| Alt+Tab does nothing, but Windows+Tab and the taskbar Task View button work | Possibly isolated to the shortcut or one app | Test in File Explorer and on the desktop |
| Alt+Tab, Windows+Tab and the taskbar all fail | Possibly input or system-level | Other keyboards, a restart, and pending updates |
Diagnostic steps when the shortcut fails outright
These steps are practical checks rather than a Microsoft-verified repair sequence. Work through them in order and stop when the shortcut responds.

- Confirm that Alt is held the whole time. Try a different Alt key on the keyboard if it has two.
- Open a window in File Explorer, then press Alt+Tab. Repeat on the desktop with no app focused. If the result differs by location, the problem is tied to the focused app.
- Press Windows+Tab. If Task View opens, the Windows key and Tab are reaching the system.
- Test the keyboard on another computer, or try a different keyboard on this one. A failure that follows the keyboard points to hardware. Only then is replacing the keyboard a reasonable step.
- Restart the computer and check for pending Windows updates. Restarting clears stuck input states, but it is not guaranteed to fix the problem.
Avoid making changes that cannot easily be reversed, such as editing the registry, unless you have a specific reason and a backup. None of the official pages cited here recommend those changes for this symptom.

What is and is not established
Microsoft’s support pages document Alt+Tab’s behavior, the related settings, and the built-in alternatives. They do not establish a single cause for the shortcut failing completely, and they do not confirm a fix for all such failures.

Some users have reported that Alt+Tab, Windows+Tab and Task Manager stopped working after an update. A Microsoft Q&A post dated 2025-11-11 describes this (Microsoft Q&A, “Settings, Alt Tab, Win Tab and Task Manager with problems after latest update”). That is an individual account, not a confirmed cause, and it does not show that an update will affect every computer. If you suspect an update, confirm the sequence of events on your own machine before drawing a conclusion.
Keyboard replacement is only worth considering after a hardware fault has been shown on your own equipment. Nothing in the official documentation establishes that a keyboard is defective in these cases.
In short: if Alt+Tab shows unexpected windows, adjust the Multitasking and desktop settings. If it does nothing, use Windows+Tab or the taskbar Task View button to keep working, then isolate whether the fault follows the app, the keyboard, or the system.
