What AltStore Is (and What It Isn’t)
AltStore is an iOS app store alternative for sideloading, built around AltServer (desktop) and AltStore (on-device). It’s designed for people who want more control than the App Store offers, without changing system security settings like a jailbreak would.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What it isn’t: it’s not an App Store replacement with guaranteed availability for any paid app. It won’t magically bypass Apple’s signing rules. Apps you install must be correctly packaged (IPA) and trusted by iOS signing.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Prerequisites You Must Have
- An iPhone or iPad running a supported iOS/iPadOS version (commonly iOS 14+ in many current AltStore setups; check your AltStore release notes for exact minimums).
- A computer with AltServer installed: macOS or Windows.
- USB access for initial setup (at least once). Some setups can continue over Wi‑Fi, but first pairing usually requires a cable.
- Your Apple ID to sign apps (AltStore uses developer signing rules; you’ll need to authenticate during setup).
- Two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled on your Apple ID.
- IPA files if you’re installing apps that aren’t provided by AltStore’s catalog. For open-source or community apps, you’ll still need a valid IPA.
Before you start, confirm you have a stable internet connection on both the computer and the iOS device—signing failures often look like network errors.
How AltStore Works on iPhone and iPad
Think of it as a pipeline:
- AltServer on your computer signs apps using your Apple credentials.
- AltStore on your device installs those signed apps via Apple’s permitted mechanisms.
- Because the signing method is time-limited, iOS will remove (or “expire”) installed apps when their signature becomes invalid.
In practice, the signature renewal schedule is the biggest behavioral difference from the official App Store: you’ll need to refresh.
Step 1: Install AltServer (macOS)
On macOS, AltServer is the desktop component that performs signing and (optionally) handles Wi‑Fi installation/refresh once you pair your device.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Download AltServer for macOS from the official AltStore distribution page.
- Open the downloaded package/disk image and follow the installer prompts.
- After installation, launch AltServer from your Applications folder.
- Keep AltServer running while you set up your iPhone or iPad.
- If your Mac asks for permissions, allow them (local network access and notification prompts can matter for smoother Wi‑Fi pairing).
Step 1: Install AltServer (Windows)
On Windows, AltServer provides the signing engine. Installing it correctly usually comes down to getting drivers/services working and leaving the app running.
- Download AltServer for Windows from the official AltStore distribution page.
- Run the installer (right-click → Run as administrator if you hit permission errors).
- Launch AltServer and sign in/authenticate when prompted.
- Leave AltServer open during pairing and installation.
- If Windows Firewall prompts appear, allow AltServer access on the current network so device discovery works.
Step 2: Connect Your iPhone or iPad
Initial setup is easiest with USB. After that, you can often switch to Wi‑Fi syncing, but USB is the reliable first step.
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- On iOS, unlock the device. If prompted, tap Trust This Computer.
- In AltServer, look for your device name in the device list.
- If the device doesn’t appear, try a different USB port and cable. Avoid charge-only cables.
Step 3: Install AltStore on iOS
You’ll install the AltStore app onto your iPhone/iPad the same way you’d install any signed IPA: by asking AltServer to deploy it.
- Open AltServer on your computer.
- Select your connected iPhone/iPad.
- Choose the option to Install AltStore (wording varies by version, but the intent is the same).
- Authenticate with your Apple ID when prompted.
- Wait for the installation to finish on your iOS device.
After install, iOS may block AltStore until you trust its certificate.

- Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management (or Device Management on some iOS versions).
- Find the entry for your Apple ID/profile.
- Tap Trust (or Verify App) to allow AltStore to run.
Step 4: Install Apps Using AltStore
Once AltStore is trusted, you can install apps. You’ll typically see two workflows: install from AltStore’s sources/catalog, or install an IPA you provide.
Install an app from AltStore sources/catalog
If AltStore has a built-in source for an app you want, you can usually install it directly.
- Open AltStore on your iPhone/iPad.
- Browse the available apps or sources.
- Select the app and tap Install.
- Confirm the download/signing prompt.
Install an app from an IPA file
This is the most common method when you’re using third-party builds or you have a specific app package.
- Download the IPA you want (make sure it’s from a source you trust).
- In AltStore on your computer, drag-and-drop the IPA into AltServer/AltStore’s IPA import workflow, or use the IPA import button if present.
- Select your connected iPhone/iPad.
- Wait for signing and installation to complete.
- On iOS, open the app. If prompted to trust, go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and trust the associated profile.
Refreshing Installed Apps (the Part Apple Enforces)
AltStore-sideloaded apps typically expire and need renewal based on the signing method you’re using. In most common setups, you’ll refresh every 7 days to keep apps working.
When an app expires, iOS may show it as unavailable or force reinstallation (you don’t usually “lose data” inside the app the way you would with deletions, but functionality can stop).
How to refresh in AltStore
- Plug your iPhone/iPad into the computer (or ensure you’ve enabled Wi‑Fi syncing, if available in your setup).
- Open AltStore on iOS.
- Go to the refresh option (often labeled My Apps then Refresh All or Refresh).
- Keep AltServer open so it can complete signing/renewal.
Don’t forget: set up recurring refresh
If your computer sleeps or you don’t keep AltServer running, you’ll miss the renewal window. That’s when apps suddenly stop launching.
Practical fix: set your computer to not sleep during the refresh schedule, and keep your cable available for a quick weekly refresh.

Troubleshooting When Things Fail
Most AltStore failures fall into a few buckets: trust/certificate issues, signing/authentication errors, device not showing up, or network/firewall problems. Use the checks below in order.
Device not detected in AltServer
Start with the basics, because sideloading is sensitive to connectivity and permissions.
- Try a different USB cable (data cable, not “charge only”).
- Use a different USB port (avoid hubs).
- Unlock the iPhone/iPad and accept Trust This Computer.
- Reboot both the phone and the computer.
- On Windows, reinstall/repair iTunes components if drivers are broken (Apple device drivers are involved).
AltStore installs but won’t open (trust missing)
This is the classic “app is not verified” scenario.
- Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
- Under Device Management, find your Apple ID/profile.
- Tap Trust.
- Close Settings and retry opening AltStore.
Signing/authentication errors with your Apple ID
If AltServer can’t sign apps, iOS can’t install them. In practice, this often comes down to Apple ID 2FA, account access, or Apple-side restrictions.
- Confirm you can sign into the Apple ID used by AltServer.
- Make sure 2FA is enabled and working.
- Try again while the computer clock is correct (incorrect time can break certificate validation).
- Temporarily disable VPN/proxy software if it interferes with Apple sign-in.
IPA won’t install (compatibility or package issues)
If the IPA is built for a different iOS/iPadOS version or has entitlements that don’t match your signing method, installation can fail.
- Verify the IPA’s source and intended platform.
- Check whether the IPA is signed/built for the right architecture and iOS target.
- Try installing a known-good IPA from a source you trust to confirm your pipeline works.
Installed apps stop working after a few days
This is almost always an expiration/refresh issue, not an AltStore “broken” problem.
- Open AltStore on iOS → refresh the apps.
- Make sure AltServer is running on your computer when you refresh.
- If you rely on Wi‑Fi, confirm both devices are on the same network and Wi‑Fi syncing is enabled.
- If you missed a renewal window, uninstall and reinstall if refresh doesn’t restore access.
AltStore Limits, Risks, and Best Practices
AltStore isn’t inherently risky, but sideloading always shifts some responsibility to you: verifying sources, keeping signatures current, and understanding what you install.

Use trusted IPA sources
Only install IPA files from authors you trust or reputable repositories. A malicious build can request permissions like any other iOS app.
Keep backups of critical app data
Some sideloaded apps behave differently with iCloud backup or local storage. If an app is important, periodically verify that its data is backed up via iOS methods.

Watch for duplicates and stale apps
When you reinstall after expiration, you may create multiple app entries or leave behind older installs. If something acts “stuck,” uninstall the app and reinstall the IPA again.

If your goal is sideloading without jailbreak, there are other paths—each with different tradeoffs.
Official App Store alternatives (no sideloading)
If you only need more apps, the simplest route is still the App Store itself. But it won’t cover every niche tool, beta, or community build.
Other sideload managers
There are other sideloading tools that also rely on desktop signing and periodic refresh. Your best choice depends on your comfort with setup and your tolerance for recurring maintenance.
When comparing, prioritize: supported iOS versions, reliability of device detection, and clear renewal/expiration behavior.

FAQs
Does AltStore require a jailbreak?
No. AltStore is designed to work without jailbreak by using Apple’s signing and iOS’s permitted app installation mechanisms.
How long do AltStore-installed apps last?
They typically expire and require refresh on a recurring schedule (commonly every 7 days). Exact behavior depends on the signing method and your configuration, but “refresh regularly” is the rule.
Can I use AltStore without a computer connected every time?
You usually need AltServer on your computer during installation and refresh. Some setups allow Wi‑Fi syncing for easier refresh, but the desktop component still does the signing work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill iOS delete my apps when signatures expire?
When an app’s signature becomes invalid, iOS will stop launching it. In some cases it may appear unusable until you refresh or reinstall.
Is it safe to install IPA files?
IPA safety depends on the source. If you trust the publisher and the build, you reduce risk. If you don’t, don’t install it—iOS can’t magically make untrusted code safe.
Bottom Line
AltStore gives you an iOS app store alternative without jailbreaking by pairing a desktop signing app (AltServer) with AltStore on your iPhone or iPad. Once you trust the profile and complete initial pairing, installing IPA builds becomes routine.
The only “gotcha” you can’t ignore is renewal: you’ll need to refresh installed apps regularly so they keep launching on iOS.
