In Word for Windows, press Alt+F9 to switch all fields between their codes and their displayed results. Press the shortcut again to switch back. This changes the display; it does not update the fields.
What Alt+F9 does in Word
Microsoft’s Word keyboard-shortcut guide describes Alt+F9 as switching between all field codes and their results. A field code is the instruction Word uses for a dynamic item; its result is what Word displays from that instruction. The shortcut changes which of those views appears in the document, not the underlying field.

For example, if the document suddenly shows field instructions instead of familiar values, press Alt+F9 once to return to the results view. Press it again to show the codes.
Choose the shortcut for the task
These commands are easy to confuse because they affect fields in different ways. Microsoft lists the following shortcuts:
#1 Best Overall
| Task | Word for Windows | Word for Mac | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch display for all fields | Alt+F9 | Option+F9 | Shows field codes or their results throughout the document |
| Switch display for a selected field | Shift+F9 | Shift+F9 | Shows the selected field’s code or result |
| Update selected fields | F9 | F9 | Updates the selected field rather than switching its display |
The Mac shortcuts in the table are listed in Microsoft’s shortcut guide; exact behavior can depend on the Word version and keyboard configuration. If a key combination does something unexpected, check whether shortcuts have been customized and confirm which platform you are using.
If field codes stay visible
Use Word’s Windows options
A Microsoft-hosted community answer describes an alternative in Windows Word: open File > Options > Advanced, then find Show document content and change Show field codes instead of their values. This setting controls the same general display choice as Alt+F9. The guidance dates from 2020, so the wording or location may differ in your version of Word.

Check that the problem is really field codes
Field codes are not the same as formatting marks such as paragraph symbols. Turning paragraph marks on or off will not resolve a field-code display issue. A separate possibility mentioned in a Microsoft-hosted community discussion is that a particular field uses hidden-text formatting; that is distinct from the all-fields toggle and is historical community guidance, so the exact behavior may vary by document and Word version.
