Alternate Data Stream: Key Facts About NTFS Named Data

An alternate data stream is named data associated with a file beyond its ordinary contents. Learn the NTFS naming syntax and ways to inspect streams.

An alternate data stream (ADS) is named data stored alongside a file’s ordinary, unnamed contents. Windows’ NTFS stream syntax identifies it with a colon-delimited name, such as report.txt:notes:$DATA. Because normal file listings and many applications show only the ordinary contents, a file can have named streams that are not obvious during routine browsing.

What is an alternate data stream?

A file has a default stream—the data normally treated as the file’s contents. In NTFS terminology, an alternate data stream is an additional, named stream associated with that file. Microsoft describes a stream as a sequence of bytes; a named stream and the default stream can hold different data and be read or written independently. See Microsoft’s NTFS Streams protocol documentation and Win32 File Streams documentation.

In the full NTFS naming form, a stream is addressed as filename:stream name:stream type. For example, report.txt:notes:$DATA refers to a named data stream called notes. The default data stream has an empty stream name, so its fully specified form is report.txt::$DATA; using just report.txt refers to that default stream.

How is a named stream different from the file’s usual contents?

The default stream is what most people mean by a file’s contents: the text, image, or other data opened by a typical application. A named stream is separate data associated with the same file. Each stream has its own allocation size, actual size, and valid data length, and stream-level properties can include compression, encryption, and sparseness. Those properties describe what streams can support; they do not mean that every application displays or handles named streams in the same way.

Stream Example name Meaning
Default data stream report.txt::$DATA The file’s ordinary contents; its stream name is empty.
Named data stream report.txt:notes:$DATA Additional data named notes, associated with the file.

Why might an alternate data stream not appear in File Explorer or a normal listing?

Many everyday file views show the default stream and omit named streams. Microsoft notes that not all applications are written to access alternate streams, so a program may not reveal or use data stored in one. Microsoft’s Sysinternals example creates a stream with echo hello > test:stream and reads it with more < test:stream; in that documented example, the displayed size of the file may remain zero. This is an illustration of stream behavior, not a universal display rule. See Microsoft Sysinternals Streams.

Can directories have alternate data streams?

Yes. Microsoft protocol documentation says directories can have named alternate data streams as well as files. A directory’s default stream is a directory stream rather than a default data stream, so the terminology differs, but named streams can still be associated with it. Microsoft’s protocol description uses qualified language: a file system may support alternate streams. Do not assume every file system supports them simply because NTFS does.

How can you inspect alternate data streams?

Use the Windows directory command

Microsoft documents dir /R as a command-line way to observe named streams on NTFS. Run it in the relevant directory from Command Prompt; it lists stream information alongside directory contents where streams are present. The exact presentation depends on the command output and context.

Use Microsoft Sysinternals Streams

Microsoft’s Streams utility examines specified files and directories and reports stream names and sizes. Its documented -s option recurses through subdirectories. The utility also documents a -d option to delete streams; treat that as a destructive capability, not as a reason to remove a stream whose purpose you have not identified. Check the current Streams page for supported-platform and version details.

What the definition does—and does not—tell you

  • An alternate stream is additional named data associated with a file, not a second ordinary file that must appear separately in a folder listing.
  • Its presence alone does not establish what the data means or whether it is wanted; inspect its name, size, and context before taking action.
  • Stream support is a file-system capability, not a guarantee that every application exposes named streams.
